A cat that is ill, highly distressed by travel, or poorly suited to the trip may be better off with a trusted caregiver at home; discuss that choice and any health concerns with your veterinarian.
1. Decide whether this trip is right for your cat
Consider your cat’s health, any breathing or heart concerns, prior travel experience, and how it responds to stress. Travel is not automatically the best option for every cat. UC Davis recommends considering whether a pet sitter at home may be less stressful.
Arrange a veterinary conversation well before departure. Ask whether your cat is fit to travel, whether its vaccinations and records are current, what stress or illness signs to watch for, and whether any individual medication plan is appropriate. Do not give a sedative or other medication without veterinary direction.
Requirements vary by route and destination. The FDA says each U.S. state or territory sets its own animal-health requirements, and USDA/APHIS does not regulate interstate movement. CDC also advises checking destination requirements. Confirm the rules with the relevant state, territorial, or destination authorities rather than relying on a generic checklist: FDA travel guidance and CDC pet travel guidance.

Once it will enter willingly, build up in small stages:

- Start the engine without driving, then take a short drive.
- Gradually lengthen drives as your cat tolerates them.
CDC recommends a series of short drives, increasing time in the car gradually. Familiarity can make the trip easier, but it cannot guarantee that every cat will become comfortable. See CDC’s pet travel guidance, UC Davis’s guide to traveling with cats, and VCA’s car-travel advice.
3. Secure the carrier and prevent escapes
Keep your cat inside a suitable, well-ventilated carrier while the vehicle is moving; never let it roam loose. CDC says a travel crate should let the pet stand, sit, lie down, and turn around, and should be secured so it cannot slide or shift.

The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 position statement recommends placing the carrier on the floor behind the driver or passenger seat. Use a seat belt only if the carrier is crash-test certified: the association warns that a belt can crush a carrier that lacks this certification. A harness and leash may help during a controlled transfer, but they do not replace a secured carrier in a moving car. Read the FelineVMA position statement for its recommendations.
At stops, make sure your cat is contained before opening a car door or window. Keep it in the carrier, or use another secure enclosure appropriate to the situation; an unsecured cat can bolt into an unfamiliar area.

CDC recommends feeding your cat 3 to 4 hours before departure to help prevent car sickness or vomiting. FDA also advises avoiding a large meal before travel. Offer water, keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature, and check your cat regularly.
Never leave your cat alone in a parked car. CDC’s Pet Travel Safety, dated April 15, 2026, states: “Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle.”
If your cat has a history of nausea, severe anxiety, or distress, ask your veterinarian for an individual plan before the trip; medication effects and risks differ between animals. Confirm pet policies before booking lodging, and identify emergency veterinary care along your route or near your destination.
