Why Is My Rabbit Itchy? 9 Possible Causes and What to Do

Itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis. These nine possible causes explain what ear crusts, dandruff, flea dirt, circular lesions, and hair loss may mean—and when a rabbit needs veterinary care.

Rabbit itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Mites, fleas, ringworm, other infections, irritants, and noninfectious skin disease can all make a rabbit scratch, groom excessively, shake its head, or lose fur. The same red patch or bald spot can have several explanations, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

This guide covers nine plausible cause categories and the observations that help a rabbit-experienced veterinarian investigate them. The nine items are not a ranked prevalence list; no current, generalizable percentage is established for how many pet rabbits develop itching. Arrange an examination if itching persists, the skin is damaged, your rabbit has ear crusts, or its behavior or appetite changes.

First, understand what “itchy” can mean in a rabbit

Rabbits may scratch with a hind foot, rub their face, shake their head, over-groom, chew at the coat, or avoid being touched. A rabbit that is grooming more than usual may be reacting to pain as well as itch. Fur loss, dandruff, scabs, redness, moist skin, or sores are clues, but none proves a particular disease.

Keep a short record before the appointment: when the behavior began, which body areas are affected, whether the problem is spreading, and whether another animal or person has skin symptoms. Note changes in bedding, litter, cleaning products, diet, housing, and indoor or outdoor access. A clear photograph taken in good light can help show progression, but it cannot replace an examination.

Because rabbits can become seriously ill while hiding signs, seek prompt veterinary advice if itching is accompanied by reduced eating, fewer droppings, lethargy, severe pain, bleeding, pus, a foul odor, or rapidly worsening skin.

9 possible causes of rabbit itching

1. Ear mites

Ear mites commonly cause persistent scratching, head shaking, and thick brown crusts in or around the ear. Crusts may extend down the ear canal or onto the surrounding skin. The material can look dramatic, but its appearance does not establish the diagnosis; a veterinarian may examine debris or perform other testing.

Do not pull ear crusts off at home. They can be firmly attached to inflamed tissue, and removing them manually is painful and may cause bleeding. Keep handling gentle and arrange a rabbit-experienced veterinary examination, especially if your rabbit is holding its head differently, has balance changes, or reacts painfully when the ear is touched.

2. Fur mites (“walking dandruff”)

Fur mites can produce heavy white or gray flakes that appear to move through the coat, sometimes described as walking dandruff. Itching, irritated skin, and patchy grooming may accompany the flakes. Signs can be more noticeable when a rabbit is stressed or already unwell.

Moving flakes are suggestive, not definitive. A clinician can distinguish fur mites from dry skin, lice, fungal disease, or debris with an examination and appropriate sampling. Tell the veterinarian whether other rabbits or household animals have flakes or itching, because some ectoparasites can spread between animals.

3. Burrowing mange mites

Burrowing mange mites are uncommon in pet rabbits but can cause intense itching and marked skin inflammation. Depending on the species and affected area, lesions may involve the face, ears, feet, or other body sites. Because these mites can affect people, avoid close contact with irritated skin and wash hands after handling until a veterinarian has assessed the rabbit.

Diagnosis may require skin scrapings or other tests, and treatment must be selected for the rabbit and the confirmed organism. Do not use a leftover product from another pet or attempt to treat people or animals without professional advice.

4. Fleas

Rabbits can acquire fleas from other animals or from the environment. Flea dirt—tiny dark specks in the coat—plus scratching, chewing at the skin, or hair loss can raise suspicion. Flea dirt can be checked with a fine-toothed flea comb as an observation aid; combing does not treat an infestation and cannot confirm that fleas are the only problem.

Rabbit-safe flea control requires veterinary direction. Products formulated for dogs or cats may be dangerous to rabbits. In its rabbit parasitic-disease guidance, the Merck Veterinary Manual identifies fipronil as contraindicated in rabbits and does not recommend flea collars. If fleas are found, ask how to address every affected animal and the living environment rather than treating only the rabbit you can see scratching.

5. Lice and other external parasites

Lice and other ectoparasites are routine considerations in a rabbit with coat changes or generalized itch. You may see nits attached to hairs, scales, broken hairs, or areas of thinning, but many parasites are too small to identify reliably without magnification. Different species require different management.

A veterinary examination can separate lice from mites, fleas, fungal infection, and nonparasitic skin disease. Bring information about contact with other rabbits, rescue or boarding exposure, grooming tools, and whether the rabbit lives indoors, outdoors, or in both settings.

6. Ringworm (dermatophytosis)

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. Lesions may be circular, raised, red, and flaky, often beginning on the head before spreading to other areas. Hair may break or fall out around the edge. Some rabbits have less classic patterns, so a noncircular patch does not rule it out.

Ringworm is zoonotic: people and other animals can be exposed. Wash hands after handling, avoid sharing brushes or bedding, and clean grooming equipment appropriately while you arrange veterinary care. A negative Wood’s lamp result does not exclude dermatophytosis because not all causative agents fluoresce. The Merck Veterinary Manual states: “A negative result with a Wood’s lamp illumination does not exclude dermatophytosis, because all agents do not fluoresce.” Culture or other laboratory testing may therefore be needed.

7. Bacterial or other fungal skin infection

Bacteria or fungi can infect damaged skin, occur alongside parasites, or develop in a rabbit whose grooming or immune defenses are impaired. Redness, warmth, swelling, moist discharge, crusting, odor, sores, and tenderness are possible signs. Itching may be localized or widespread.

These infections cannot be reliably distinguished by color or odor alone. A veterinarian may collect cells for cytology, sample material for microbial culture, or recommend a biopsy when the appearance is unusual or the condition does not respond as expected. Treatment depends on the organism and the depth of infection.

8. Contact irritants or allergy-like reactions

New bedding, dusty litter, shampoos, fragranced products, disinfectants, or residue on a cleaned surface can irritate rabbit skin. A reaction may appear where the material touches the body, although generalized irritation is also possible. Some rabbits may have an allergy-like response, but “allergy” should not be assumed before parasites and infection have been considered.

Tell the veterinarian exactly what contacts the rabbit and when each product was introduced. Do not repeatedly bathe or scrub the skin to remove a suspected irritant; moisture, friction, and unsuitable products can worsen damaged tissue. The safest environmental change is usually to stop a newly introduced or strongly fragranced product while preserving a clean, dry, low-dust setup until the cause is clearer.

9. Other skin disease, tumors, or underlying health and husbandry problems

Rabbit dermatology also includes tumors and other nonparasitic disorders. A lump, persistent ulcer, one-sided lesion, recurring scab, or patch that fails to heal deserves examination even if the rabbit is not scratching constantly. Dental pain, obesity, arthritis, spinal problems, or illness elsewhere can reduce grooming quality and leave skin damp or matted, creating secondary irritation.

Diet, housing, humidity, substrate, grooming ability, body condition, and general health all provide useful context. A veterinarian may need to examine the whole rabbit rather than focusing only on the itchy spot.

Observation Possible considerations Why an examination is still needed
Brown crusts in or around the ears; head shaking Ear mites are one possibility Crusts can also accompany inflammation or infection; ear debris and tissue need professional assessment
Heavy white flakes or dandruff, sometimes appearing to move Fur mites are one possibility Dry skin, lice, fungal disease, and debris can look similar
Dark specks in the coat, itching, or fur loss Fleas are possible Flea dirt is not proof of an active infestation or the only cause; treatment choices must be rabbit-safe
Circular, red, raised, flaky patches, often on the head Ringworm is one possibility Other infections and inflammatory diseases can mimic the pattern; testing may be required
Generalized itch, redness, sores, or hair loss Parasites, infection, irritants, allergy-like reactions, and other disease The broad differential makes a physical examination and targeted tests important

How a rabbit veterinarian investigates itching

Bring the written timeline, photographs, product labels, and information about every animal sharing the home. A useful history includes duration, previous treatments, contact with other animals, housing, bedding or substrate, diet, grooming, and indoor or outdoor exposure. Mention any medication or over-the-counter product already used, including the dose and date.

The clinician may inspect the ears, coat, nails, skin folds, mouth, and body condition, then choose tests based on the pattern:

  • Skin scraping: samples surface or deeper material for mites and other microscopic causes.
  • Cytology: examines cells and organisms from crusts, discharge, or affected skin.
  • Microbial culture: helps identify bacteria or fungi when infection is suspected and can guide treatment selection.
  • Biopsy: removes a small tissue sample when a tumor, unusual inflammation, or persistent lesion needs clarification.

A Wood’s lamp can be part of a dermatology work-up, but a negative result does not rule out ringworm. The final plan should follow the finding rather than the appearance of itching alone.

What to do before the appointment

  1. Observe without causing injury. Note scratching, head shaking, grooming, appetite, droppings, and sleep. Photograph lesions and record whether they enlarge.
  2. Keep the environment clean and dry. Remove soiled bedding, reduce dust, and avoid newly introduced fragrances or harsh residues. Do not apply creams, essential oils, shampoos, or antiseptics unless your veterinarian instructs you to use a specific product.
  3. Limit spread. Wash hands after handling affected areas, do not share brushes between animals, and launder or disinfect equipment as directed if ringworm or parasites are suspected.
  4. Arrange veterinary care. Choose a clinician familiar with rabbits, particularly when ear crusts, open sores, rapid hair loss, or a household exposure is present.

Do not pull ear crusts away, and do not medicate a rabbit with dog or cat flea products on your own. A product that is tolerated by another species can be toxic to rabbits, and an apparently simple itch may be a different disease requiring different treatment.

When itching is urgent

Contact a veterinarian promptly for bleeding, deep scratches, pus, foul odor, severe swelling, intense pain, a head tilt, balance problems, rapidly spreading lesions, or suspected exposure of people or other animals to ringworm or contagious mites. Seek same-day advice if your rabbit stops eating, produces markedly fewer droppings, becomes weak, or hides unusually; skin disease and stress can compound a rabbit’s risk of gastrointestinal illness.

How treatment decisions are made

There is no single treatment for “itching.” Parasites may require a rabbit-appropriate antiparasitic plan and environmental control; fungal disease may require testing and antifungal management; bacterial infection may need culture-guided therapy; and an irritant requires removal of the trigger. Tumors or other underlying disorders follow an entirely different pathway.

Follow the prescribed schedule exactly and ask how to clean housing, handle contact animals, and monitor for improvement. If the skin worsens or new lesions appear, report that rather than adding another product. Improvement in scratching does not by itself prove that the original cause has been eliminated.

Bottom line

An itchy rabbit may have ear mites, fur mites, mange mites, fleas, lice, ringworm, another infection, contact irritation, or a different skin or health disorder. Look closely at the ears and coat, document changes, and protect people and other animals from possible contagious conditions, but leave diagnosis and medication choices to a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.
