People are talking about bodega cats because they are more than animals noticed behind a counter. In New York City, a cat that spends time in a corner store can become a familiar neighborhood character, a practical presence for a shopkeeper, and an instantly shareable story online. The appeal is personal and local: customers recognize individual cats, visit stores to see them, and pass their photos and habits along to people far beyond the block.
That popularity should not be confused with proof that cats solve rodent problems or that every store cat is legal under current food-safety rules. The cultural phenomenon is well documented; the citywide head count and pest-control claims are not established by official or controlled studies.

What is a bodega cat?
A bodega cat is a cat living in or spending time in a New York City bodega or corner store. “Bodega cat” describes a setting and a relationship with a neighborhood, not a breed. Some cats are known by name, have regular sleeping spots, and are recognized by customers who see them during daily shopping trips.
The stores themselves are unusually social places. A customer may stop in for coffee, groceries or a newspaper and encounter the same cat repeatedly. Over time, the animal becomes part of the store’s identity in much the same way a familiar owner, cashier or hand-painted sign does. That familiarity is the starting point for both local affection and online attention.

Why are bodega cats suddenly everywhere?
They turn an ordinary errand into a relationship
Most corner-store visits are brief and routine. A cat creates a small point of recognition: someone asks its name, takes a picture, or tells a friend where it sleeps. Those interactions make a commercial space feel distinctive without requiring a special event or attraction. The cat is encountered in the middle of everyday life, which gives the stories their charm.
Individual personalities travel well online
Photos and short videos need a clear character to hold attention. A cat perched on a refrigerator, greeting customers or ignoring the commotion can communicate a whole personality in seconds. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that a video of a Greenpoint bodega cat named Mimi received more than 9 million views. That is an example of extraordinary online reach, not a measurement of how many bodega cats exist or how popular they are overall.
They represent a particular kind of city community
Sydney Miller, a poet and digital content producer, told the Associated Press: “Ultimately, the cats are a symbol of community building and the special, unique type of connection that happens in a city like New York.” The observation explains why the subject resonates beyond cat lovers. A bodega cat connects strangers through a shared local reference: people know the store, recognize the animal and understand the routine around it.

There is no official New York City census of bodega cats. Dan Rimada, founder of the Bodega Cats of New York project, estimates that 30% to 40% of roughly 13,000 New York City bodegas have a cat. If both parts of that estimate were exact, the range would correspond to approximately 3,900 to 5,200 stores, but the underlying percentage is an informed project estimate rather than a verified city statistic.

| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 30%–40% | Estimated share of NYC bodegas with a cat | Dan Rimada’s estimate based on visits and submissions; not an official census |
| About 13,000 | Approximate number of NYC bodegas used in that estimate | Used as the project’s base figure, not a count of stores independently verified here |
| More than 9 million views | Video of Mimi, a Greenpoint bodega cat | Associated Press example from 2025; not a population or popularity survey |
The estimate is useful for conveying scale, but it cannot tell you how many cats are currently in stores, how often they are present, or whether their living conditions meet the same standard. Cats may move, stores may close or change ownership, and an informal submission-based count can miss animals that customers never photograph.
Do bodega cats really keep mice away?
Shopkeepers and supporters commonly cite mouse deterrence as a reason to keep a cat. A cat’s scent, movement and occasional hunting may make a store less attractive to some mice, and owners may value the animal as a working presence as well as a companion. These are reported practical reasons, not established performance data.
The material available on bodega cats does not provide a controlled study showing that they reliably prevent infestations, reduce rat populations or replace professional pest management. Cats are not a substitute for sealing entry points, storing food correctly, removing waste, monitoring droppings or calling a licensed pest professional when rodents are present. Rats can be dangerous to cats, and a store with a cat can still have a serious infestation.

The idea is easy to understand from observation: a cat may catch a mouse, and a shopkeeper may notice fewer sightings afterward. But a single store’s experience cannot establish how well cats work in different buildings, neighborhoods or levels of infestation. Construction gaps, food storage, sanitation and access to neighboring buildings often matter more than whether one cat is on site.

Are bodega cats legal?
Legality depends on both New York State rules and New York City requirements, and the answer can change as legislation moves. A city proposal alone cannot override a state requirement.
State context reported in April 2025
An Associated Press report dated April 3, 2025, described New York State law as barring most animals from stores that sell food. The state department emphasized compliance, educational resources and corrective-action options before fines. That description reflects the legal and administrative context reported at that date; operators should check current state guidance rather than rely on a social-media summary.
New York City’s 2025 proposal
New York City Council Int. 1471-2025 would have changed city Health Code provisions that prohibit cats in retail food stores. The proposal also included free vaccination and spay/neuter services, subject to appropriation. Its own summary acknowledged that city action would not be enough: additional action by New York State would be required before cats could be permitted under the broader legal framework.

The Council record shows the bill was filed at the end of the session on December 31, 2025, without enactment. “Filed” is not the same as “passed,” so the proposal did not itself create a new permission for store cats.

Reported 2026 successor bills
A September 2026 press kit from Bodega Cats of New York says successor New York City bill Int. 0830-2026 and state bill A. 8341 were in committee and had not passed as of September 4, 2026. That status comes from the project’s press material, not the official legislative files. Anyone publishing or relying on the status after that date should check the city and state bill records for amendments, votes or new actions.
Because the rules involve food safety, inspections and two levels of government, a store owner should obtain current advice from the relevant health authorities before bringing an animal into a food-selling area. The existence of many cats in stores does not prove that every arrangement complies with the law.

The public conversation often treats bodega cats as either charming workers or an automatic health violation. Both shortcuts miss important differences between individual stores. The available material does not establish that every bodega cat is well cared for, nor that every store cat is mistreated.

Questions that matter for a cat’s welfare
- Does the cat have reliable access to clean water, appropriate food and veterinary care?
- Is there a quiet, secure place to rest away from customers, hot equipment and aggressive handling?
- Can the cat avoid traffic, open doors, cleaning chemicals and other hazards?
- Are vaccinations, parasite control and sterilization handled responsibly?
- Is the cat protected from rodents, poisons and fights with other animals?
The 2025 city proposal’s vaccination and spay/neuter provisions show that animal-health services were part of the policy discussion. They do not demonstrate that those services are available to, or used for, every cat currently in a store.

Food-safety questions are separate
Even a healthy, friendly cat can raise food-safety concerns in a retail environment. Fur, litter, waste, food-contact surfaces and access to storage areas must be managed under applicable rules. A cat’s presence also does not eliminate the need for a formal rodent-control plan. The responsible standard is to evaluate the specific premises, not to assume that a popular internet image proves safety or danger.
Why named cats matter to neighborhoods
The strongest evidence for bodega cats’ importance is social rather than statistical. The Bodega Cats of New York project says Rimada began its Instagram account in 2020 after a cat named Luna in a Fort Greene bodega kept him at the counter. He began visiting stores intentionally in 2022. That origin story illustrates how an incidental encounter can become a record of neighborhood life.
When a cat has a name and a history, customers can pass along more than a generic “there’s a cat here.” They can say where Luna sleeps, which aisle another cat patrols or how a particular animal reacts to visitors. Those details give a rapidly changing city a small, repeatable point of memory. The store remains a business, but the cat helps turn it into a place people talk about.

Seeing a cat does not make a store a petting zoo. A considerate visitor can enjoy the encounter without creating stress for the animal or problems for the business.
- Ask the cashier before touching, feeding or photographing the cat, especially if the animal is near food or a restricted area.
- Let the cat approach. Do not pick it up, block its path or wake it for a picture.
- Keep children from chasing or crowding the animal.
- Never bring outside food, medication or flea products for the cat unless the owner specifically asks and a veterinarian has advised it.
- Do not post an exact sleeping spot or routine if doing so could expose the cat to theft, harassment or unsafe crowds.
- If the cat appears injured, dangerously thin, trapped or in immediate danger, tell the owner and contact an appropriate animal-welfare service rather than trying to intervene physically.
A growing record of the phenomenon
The Bodega Cats of New York project is also producing a book scheduled for November 2026: Bodega Cats of New York, a 240-page hardcover with photography by Gulce Kilkis and stories of 60 New York City bodega cats. The project site lists preorder information and merchandise such as prints, shirts and stickers, saying purchases help support additional visits, editing and photography. Availability and publication details can change, so readers should check the project’s own current listing for the edition they want.
What the conversation gets right—and what it should not claim
Bodega cats have become a talking point because they combine recognizable animals, neighborhood routine and a city-specific sense of place. A familiar cat can give a store character, create low-stakes connections among customers and generate stories that travel far beyond the block. The 9-million-view Mimi video demonstrates that reach vividly.
At the same time, the most responsible account keeps three limits in view: the 30%–40% prevalence figure is an unofficial estimate; pest-control benefits remain anecdotal rather than scientifically measured; and legal permission depends on state and city rules that have not been settled by the 2025 proposal or the reported 2026 committee bills. The cats matter as living parts of neighborhood culture, but their welfare, food safety and legal status must be judged store by store and date by date.
