Yes. Some dogs develop tear stains readily because tears overflow onto the facial fur. The overflow, called epiphora, can reflect facial anatomy, poor tear drainage, eye irritation, or disease. Staining alone does not tell you which cause is present, so new, persistent, worsening, or uncomfortable tearing deserves a veterinary assessment.

What a tear stain actually means

A tear stain is the visible result of repeatedly wet fur beneath or beside the eye. Tears contain pigment molecules called porphyrins; when the fur stays damp, those iron-containing compounds can leave a reddish-brown or rust-colored mark. The color is a result, not a diagnosis.

Veterinarians use the term epiphora for tear overflow. Normally, tears spread across the eye, collect at openings near the inner eyelids, and drain through the nasolacrimal ducts into the nose and throat. If the eye produces more fluid than the drainage system can carry, or if tears cannot enter or travel through the ducts effectively, they spill onto the face.

Constant moisture can create an odor, soften and inflame the skin, encourage skin infection, and mat the hair. A dog can therefore have a cosmetic-looking stain and a medical problem at the same time. Cleaning the fur may improve its appearance, but it cannot show whether the eye is painful or whether a duct is blocked.

Why some dogs stain more easily

The causes fit two broad patterns: the eye is making too many tears, or the normal drainage route is not working efficiently. Both can occur together.

Mechanism Examples described by veterinary references What it means for an owner
Excess tear production Irritation, allergies, conjunctivitis, injury, abnormal eyelashes, corneal ulcers, infection, eyelid abnormalities, or glaucoma The eye may be reacting to discomfort or disease; treating the underlying problem is more important than bleaching the fur.
Inadequate drainage or altered anatomy Flat-faced structure, prominent eyes, hair at the duct opening, debris, a foreign body, inflammation, congenital duct-opening problems, or an obstruction Tears may overflow even when the eye surface looks fairly quiet; an examination is needed to distinguish anatomy from a treatable blockage or injury.

Face shape and eye position

Short-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs and dogs with prominent eyes can be predisposed to overflow because the eyelids, eye surface, and duct openings are arranged differently. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) groups the resulting risks under brachycephalic ocular syndrome and lists chronic tearing and tear staining among possible signs.

A breed tendency is not proof that a particular episode is harmless. A dog with a flat face can still develop a scratch, ulcer, abnormal eyelash, infection, or glaucoma. Hair that touches the eye or covers the duct opening can also create a problem in a dog of any shape.

Why one dog stains while another does not

Two dogs can have similar tear production but different visible staining because their hair texture, color, grooming, skin folds, and drainage anatomy differ. Light hair makes porphyrin more obvious. A dog whose fur stays wet for long periods will usually show more residue than one whose face dries quickly. These differences explain appearance; they do not establish that the underlying eye is healthy.

How to tell routine staining from a possible eye problem

Look at the whole eye, not only the hair. Mild, longstanding staining in a comfortable dog may be related to anatomy, but you should still mention it at routine examinations. A change from your dog’s normal pattern is more informative than the color alone.

Signs that should prompt veterinary assessment

  • Tearing that is new, persistent, or getting worse.
  • Squinting, holding an eye partly closed, or obvious sensitivity to light.
  • Rubbing the face or pawing at an eye.
  • Redness of the white part of the eye or inner eyelids.
  • Cloudiness, a blue or hazy appearance, or a visible defect on the eye surface.
  • Yellow or green discharge, or a discharge that has changed in amount or character.
  • Swelling, a foul odor, wet irritated skin, or hair loss beneath the eye.

ACVO advises prompt attention for redness, rubbing, squinting, cloudiness or a blue/hazy eye, increased tearing or changed discharge, and a depression on the eye surface. These signs can accompany painful corneal disease or other conditions in which delaying care risks vision.

When anatomy is likely but still worth discussing

If the staining has been present for months, affects both eyes similarly, and your dog is not rubbing, squinting, red, or producing abnormal discharge, anatomy or drainage efficiency may be contributing. That pattern is not a diagnosis. Bring photographs of the face when the staining is at its worst and tell the veterinarian whether it varies with seasons, grooming, diet, or outdoor exposure.

What a veterinarian may check

The goal of an examination is to identify why tears are overflowing, rather than to treat the pigment in the hair. Your veterinarian will inspect the eye, eyelids, eyelashes, skin folds, and the area where the tear ducts open. They may ask when the tearing started, whether one or both eyes are affected, and whether your dog shows discomfort.

Tear-production testing

A tear-production test measures how much aqueous tear fluid the eye makes during a set period. It helps put excessive wetness into context: a dog may have overflow from overproduction, or may have a drainage problem despite ordinary tear production.

Fluorescein staining

Fluorescein dye is placed on the eye to reveal certain corneal injuries and to trace the movement of tears toward the drainage system. It can help identify a scratch or ulcer and provide information about drainage. VCA notes that failing to see dye emerge at the nose does not definitively prove that a duct is blocked; the result must be interpreted with the examination and other findings.

Assessment of the drainage pathway

If a duct problem is suspected, the veterinarian may investigate the duct openings and drainage more closely. Hair, inflammation, debris, a foreign body, a congenital opening that did not form normally, or an obstruction can each require a different approach. A general-practice veterinarian may refer a complicated or painful case to a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Treatment depends on the cause

There is no single “tear-stain treatment.” Management may involve treating eye disease, correcting an eyelid or eyelash problem, removing an irritant or foreign body, or addressing the drainage pathway.

When irritation or eye disease is driving the tears

Conjunctivitis, allergies, corneal ulcers, infections, eyelid abnormalities, abnormal eyelashes, glaucoma, and injuries need cause-specific veterinary care. Medication, protective measures, or follow-up examinations may be required. Do not use leftover eye drops or an over-the-counter product simply because the discharge resembles a previous episode: the wrong product can delay diagnosis or worsen an injury.

When drainage is the main issue

Merck describes veterinary flushing for some obstructed tear ducts. Certain congenital duct openings that failed to form may require a surgical opening. Structural problems involving the eyelids or surrounding tissues can also need a procedure. Whether an intervention is appropriate depends on the anatomy, the dog’s comfort, and the findings on examination.

When a short-nosed breed has chronic tearing

Chronic tearing can be part of brachycephalic ocular syndrome, but ACVO emphasizes that the associated surface irritation and other eye disease can be consequential. Owners of flat-faced dogs should arrange an eye examination at least once a year and sooner when signs change.

Safe cleaning at home

Home care is for removing residue and protecting the skin while you arrange or follow veterinary care. It does not open a blocked duct, heal a corneal ulcer, correct an eyelid abnormality, or cure an infection.

  1. Wash your hands before touching the face.
  2. Use a clean, soft pad or a veterinary-formulated eye-area cleaning wipe to loosen buildup on the fur and skin beneath the eye.
  3. Wipe away from the eye and use a fresh section of the pad for each pass; use separate material for each eye.
  4. Pat the area dry rather than scrubbing. Persistent dampness is what contributes to odor and skin irritation.
  5. Keep facial hair trimmed only if you can do so safely. Ask a groomer or veterinarian to handle hair close to the eyelids if your dog moves suddenly.
  6. Stop if your dog shows pain, increased squinting, redness, or distress, and contact a veterinarian.

Choosing a cleaning wipe or solution

Dog eye-cleaning wipes are a cleanup category, not a proven cure or prevention for tear staining. PetMD includes wipes among at-home cleaning options, while veterinary guidance cautions that many stain remedies have not been shown effective in research trials and some can injure the eye.

Read the label and keep every product on the surrounding skin and fur, not in the eye. Ask your veterinarian before introducing a new solution, especially if your dog is using prescribed ophthalmic medication. Products that are safe for skin are not automatically safe for the cornea.

Why hydrogen peroxide is unsafe near the eye

Do not use hydrogen peroxide to lighten tear stains. VCA warns that accidental contact can cause severe eye damage. The same caution applies to bleaching agents, concentrated acids, essential oils, and any product that does not clearly specify safe use around canine eyes.

A practical decision guide

Situation Most useful next step Reason
Longstanding staining, comfortable eyes, no redness or discharge change Discuss it at a routine visit and maintain gentle cleaning and drying Anatomy or drainage efficiency may be involved, but the pattern still merits confirmation.
New or steadily increasing tearing Book a veterinary examination New epiphora can reflect irritation, injury, infection, or a drainage problem.
Squinting, rubbing, redness, cloudiness, blue haze, or a surface defect Seek prompt veterinary attention These signs can indicate painful or vision-threatening ocular disease.
Yellow or green discharge or a marked change in discharge Contact your veterinarian promptly Changed discharge may accompany infection or significant inflammation.
Staining with wet, smelly, inflamed skin Arrange an examination while keeping the area clean and dry Moisture can lead to dermatitis or infection that needs more than wiping.

Questions owners commonly ask

Are tear stains normal in a white or flat-faced dog?

They can be common in dogs with light hair or brachycephalic anatomy, but “common” does not mean every case is harmless. Check for discomfort, redness, cloudiness, abnormal discharge, and changes from your dog’s usual pattern. A veterinarian can determine whether the appearance fits anatomy or a treatable eye problem.

Can changing food remove the stains?

The veterinary information summarized here does not establish a diet change as a reliable treatment. Because staining can result from eye irritation or drainage problems, changing food without examining the eyes can distract from the real cause.

Will a tear-stain wipe stop the tears?

No. A wipe can remove residue from the surrounding fur when used as directed, but it does not treat excess tear production, a blocked duct, a corneal injury, or an eyelid abnormality.

Should I flush my dog’s tear duct at home?

No. Duct flushing is a veterinary procedure. Attempting to force liquid through the drainage system can injure delicate tissue and may delay care for an ulcer, foreign body, or infection.

How quickly should I act if one eye suddenly waters?

Sudden one-sided tearing warrants a prompt examination, particularly if your dog squints, rubs the eye, develops redness or cloudiness, or produces yellow or green discharge. A foreign body or corneal injury can be easy to miss without magnified examination and fluorescein testing.

What to remember

Some dogs do get tear stains easily because their tears overflow onto the face, but the stain itself cannot identify the cause. Track changes, keep the surrounding fur clean and dry, avoid unsafe chemicals, and have persistent or symptomatic tearing evaluated. The useful treatment is the one that addresses why the tears are escaping the normal drainage process.
