A bright blue American lobster is exceptionally unusual, but “one in 200 million” is not the estimated share of lobsters that are blue. Northeastern University’s 2025 account gives two different figures: about one blue lobster in every two million American lobsters, and reported odds of one in 200 million of catching one. The lobster’s color is attributed to a rare genetic anomaly that leads to excess production of a protein complex called crustacyanin.
What does “1 in 200 million” mean?
In its 2025 account of Neptune, a blue American lobster, Northeastern University distinguishes between estimated prevalence and catch odds. It says roughly one in two million American lobsters are blue, while the odds of catching one are one in 200 million. Those numbers describe different things: the first is an estimated share of the population; the second is a reported chance of catching a blue lobster.

The one-in-two-million estimate is also reported by UMass Dartmouth and the New England Aquarium. The sources do not identify the original study or explain its sampling method or uncertainty range, so the figure should be treated as an estimate, not an exact, independently verified probability.

Northeastern describes Neptune as a normal American lobster in other respects, with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to overproduce crustacyanin, a protein complex associated with the blue appearance of his shell. UMass Dartmouth gives the same broad explanation for its blue lobster. These accounts attribute the coloration to a biological variation; they do not describe blue lobsters as a separate species.

How unusual is blue compared with other lobster colors?
Blue is one of several unusual color forms reported in American lobsters. Sources also mention calico, white, yellow, orange, and split coloration. The estimates below come from different publishers and years, so they are not a like-for-like ranking from one study.

NOAA describes live American lobsters as generally greenish-brown and notes that they turn red when cooked. A vivid blue shell therefore stands out against the familiar appearance of a live lobster—and differs from the red color associated with a cooked one.
