In August 2016, villagers in Rongdoi, in Assam’s Jorhat district, arranged a wedding for two frogs during a dry spell, hoping the ceremony would bring rain. Contemporary reports describe this as a local belief and ritual—not evidence that the wedding caused rainfall.
Why did villagers marry frogs in Assam?
Scroll reported that Rongdoi had endured several weeks of drought-like conditions, with heat, dust storms and damage to paddy crops. Villagers held the ceremony in keeping with a belief that it would appease Barun, a rain deity, and bring rain. Scroll’s August 31, 2016 report described hundreds of people attending.

What happened at the ceremony?
The New Indian Express reported that the wedding took place on Saturday, August 27, 2016, in Rongdoi, and estimated that about 300 people witnessed it. According to its account, a priest, Lalit Bora, performed Vedic and other wedding rites, followed by a feast. The frogs were then released into a pond. The New Indian Express’s August 29 report provides those ceremony details; the accounts describe this event, not a single ritual form practiced everywhere.
Did the frog wedding bring rain?
Manoj Kumar Neog, a Rongdoi attendee quoted by The New Indian Express, said villagers believed frog weddings brought rainfall. He recalled that dark clouds appeared after the ceremony and that it rained, but “it didn’t last for long.” That is a participant’s account of what happened afterward, not proof that the ritual caused the rain.

What is known about the custom?
The two contemporary reports establish that villagers held this ceremony in Rongdoi in August 2016 and explain the belief behind it. They do not establish how common or historically continuous frog weddings are across Assam, or whether such a ritual has any scientifically demonstrated effect on rainfall. The attendance figures are estimates for this one event: Scroll said “hundreds,” while The New Indian Express estimated some 300.
