Wild animals should not be taken home as pets. Bringing one into a house can expose people and resident pets to disease or injury, while capture and captivity can stress the animal, teach it to depend on humans, and reduce its chance of returning safely to the wild. The safest response is usually to leave wildlife where it is and observe from a distance.
If an animal is clearly badly injured or very sick, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or the relevant state or Tribal wildlife agency for instructions. Do not assume that a young animal found alone is orphaned, and do not assume that keeping a wild species is legal where you live.

What makes a wild animal different from a pet?
Domestic pets have been bred for life with people and are managed through established veterinary, housing and feeding practices. A wild animal has adaptations and instincts suited to finding food, avoiding predators, defending territory and raising young without human care. Those instincts do not disappear when someone brings the animal indoors.

| Decision concern | What can happen when wildlife is brought home | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Human and pet health | Exposure to germs, bites, scratches, contaminated bedding, feces or saliva | Keep distance and avoid handling; obtain medical advice after a bite or scratch |
| Animal welfare | Stress, inappropriate food or medicine, habituation to people and loss of survival skills | Leave healthy wildlife in place; refer genuine injuries to a qualified rehabilitator |
| Law | Permits, protected-species rules or local prohibitions may apply | Ask the wildlife authority about the exact species and location before taking action |
Wild animals can carry disease even when they look healthy
Appearance is not a health certificate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists wildlife-associated diseases that include rabies, salmonellosis, hantavirus, leptospirosis and raccoon roundworm. Which hazards matter depends on the species and the type of exposure; this list does not mean every wild animal carries every disease.
Risk can arise from a bite, scratch, saliva, urine, feces, respiratory material or contaminated surfaces. Handling an animal can transfer organisms to hands, clothing, floors, cages, food-preparation areas and household pets. Children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems can face greater consequences from some infections, so bringing an unknown animal into a home creates an avoidable exposure route.
There is no single percentage that describes the chance of becoming ill from keeping wildlife. CDC guidance identifies specific diseases and prevention steps rather than a universal risk estimate. Treat an unfamiliar wild animal as potentially infectious, use distance as the first control, and do not let it share living, sleeping or eating spaces with people or pets.
Bites and scratches are an immediate injury and rabies concern
Wild animals may bite or scratch when cornered, restrained or startled. Even a small wound can become infected, and contact with saliva from a mammal can raise a rabies-prevention question. Rabies decisions depend on the animal, the exposure and local public-health guidance, so a person should not try to assess that risk alone.

After a bite or scratch:
- Move away from the animal without attempting another capture.
- Wash the wound promptly with warm, soapy water.
- Contact a healthcare provider or local public-health department and describe the species, date, location and type of contact. Ask specifically whether rabies prevention is needed.
- Follow professional advice about wound care, infection monitoring and any recommended vaccination or observation.
Do not wait for an animal to appear sick before seeking advice. Some infections and rabies exposures require timely decisions, while trying to keep or observe the animal yourself can create additional contact.
Captivity can reduce an animal’s chance of surviving
Stress and unsuitable care
Capture removes an animal from its territory and familiar shelter. Noise, handling, confinement and the presence of people or pets can cause severe stress. An owner may offer food that is nutritionally wrong, provide an enclosure that is too small, or give medicine without knowing the species, dose or underlying problem. These mistakes can cause injury, malnutrition or death even when the intention is to help.
Habituation and dependence
Repeated human contact can make wildlife less wary. An animal that approaches people may later enter roads, yards or buildings, fail to avoid predators, or expect food from strangers. Dependence on people can also lead to conflict when the animal becomes larger or more assertive. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises referring genuine orphaning or injury to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator because rehabilitation is designed to limit unnecessary human conditioning.

Returning an animal after days or weeks indoors does not automatically restore its prospects. The animal may have missed seasonal feeding or migration opportunities, lost contact with its family group, or become too accustomed to people. A rehabilitator must evaluate the species, age, injury, behavior and release site; an unplanned release by a household can expose both the animal and local wildlife to further harm.

What to do when you find a young animal
A young animal sitting alone is not necessarily abandoned. Parents may be nearby feeding or watching from a distance, and approaching humans can keep them away. Removing a healthy youngster can separate it from its parent and create the very orphaning a finder hoped to prevent.
- Pause and observe from a distance. Keep children and pets away, and avoid touching, feeding or moving the animal.
- Look for immediate hazards. Note traffic, construction, domestic animals, extreme weather or entanglement without entering a dangerous area.
- Allow time for a parent to return. The appropriate observation period varies by species and circumstances; a wildlife professional can advise you.
- Call for expert guidance if concern remains. Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or state wildlife office and describe the species, location, behavior and any visible injury.
Do not bring the animal indoors “temporarily” while deciding what to do. Temporary handling can cause stress, alter behavior and increase disease exposure, and a well-meaning finder may not know how to reunite the youngster with its family.
When an animal really is injured or very sick
Visible bleeding, a broken limb, inability to stand or fly, severe breathing difficulty, repeated collapse, entanglement or obvious trauma warrants professional advice. So does an animal that is profoundly weak or unresponsive. From a safe distance, record the exact location and observable symptoms; a photograph taken without approaching may help an agency identify the species.

Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, state wildlife office or other wildlife authority before attempting transport. They can tell you whether intervention is appropriate, how to contain the animal if necessary and where it should go. Do not give food, water or medication unless a qualified professional instructs you to do so. An incorrect treatment can cause aspiration, digestive problems or toxic exposure.

If a professional directs transport, keep people and pets away, use the container and handling method they specify, minimize noise and travel time, and deliver the animal directly to the designated facility. Do not keep it as a project, attempt to raise it for release or post its location publicly in a way that could attract further handling.
Is it legal to keep a wild animal?
There is no single rule that makes ownership legal or illegal for every wild species everywhere. In the United States, federal protections and permit requirements can apply to particular species or activities. State, Tribal, county and municipal rules may add restrictions, and laws can differ for possession, transport, rehabilitation, breeding, sale and release.
| Rule layer | Questions to verify |
|---|---|
| Federal | Is the species protected, migratory, endangered or otherwise regulated? Is a federal permit required for possession or transport? |
| State or Tribal | Does the jurisdiction prohibit private possession, require a wildlife license or limit rehabilitation to approved facilities? |
| Local | Do county or city animal-control, zoning or public-health rules restrict the species or its enclosure? |
| Activity-specific | Are different permissions required for rescue, temporary care, transport, release, breeding or exhibition? |
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s permit guidance emphasizes that federal rules do not replace other applicable laws. Before taking possession, contact the wildlife authority for the jurisdiction where the animal was found and provide the species, location and reason for the proposed action. A general statement such as “wild animals are illegal as pets” is no more reliable than “all wild animals are legal”; the answer depends on the details.

Reptiles and amphibians can carry Salmonella and spread it to people even when they look healthy. CDC says the United States has banned the sale of turtles with shells shorter than four inches since 1975 because of the risk to children. The agency estimates that the ban prevents 100,000 Salmonella cases among children each year. That figure concerns the small-turtle sales ban; it is not a general estimate of illness from keeping wildlife or proof that every turtle is infected.

The example shows why “small,” “cute” or apparently healthy does not mean low risk. Handwashing, keeping reptiles away from kitchens and young children, and following public-health advice reduce exposure, but a wild reptile still should not be taken home as an improvised pet or rescue.
Common arguments for taking wildlife home—and why they fail
“It was alone, so it must be abandoned.”
Many young animals spend periods away from their parents while adults forage nearby. Intervention without expert confirmation can create an orphan and prevent a natural reunion.
“I will keep it only until it grows up.”
Growth can bring stronger instincts, territorial behavior and specialized care needs. Human habituation during the holding period may make later release unsafe or unsuccessful.
“It looks healthy.”
Healthy appearance does not rule out pathogens or a hidden injury. Disease risk and welfare concerns remain even when an animal is active and alert.
“I can find care instructions online.”
Species, age, injury and local law determine the right response. Generic feeding or enclosure advice can cause harm and may delay transfer to a licensed professional.
How to enjoy wildlife without owning it
- Watch from a distance with binoculars or a camera rather than approaching for contact.
- Keep cats, dogs and children away from resting, nesting and feeding wildlife.
- Do not feed wild animals or encourage them to approach people.
- Secure trash, pet food and other attractants so wildlife can remain wild and households avoid conflict.
- Use a wildlife rehabilitator or government wildlife office as the first contact for suspected injury or orphaning.
- Teach children that observing, not touching, is the respectful way to encounter wild animals.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the animal in immediate danger, or is it simply visible and alone?
- Can you keep people and pets at a safe distance without touching it?
- Do you see serious injury, entanglement, severe illness or inability to move normally?
- Have you called a qualified rehabilitator or wildlife agency before moving it?
- Have you checked the species-specific rules for the exact location?
- Has a healthcare professional advised you after any bite, scratch or possible saliva exposure?
For a healthy animal that is not in immediate danger, leaving it where it is is usually the best help. For a genuinely injured or very sick animal, professional referral—not private ownership—is the responsible next step.
