Their backward-facing barbs make them difficult to withdraw; pulling or cutting can break a quill or push it farther into tissue, and the painful procedure may make a dog struggle. Contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service promptly. A veterinary team can examine for hidden quills, manage pain, and use sedation or anesthesia when needed.
Why pulling deep quills is unsafe
Porcupine quills have backward-facing barbs that catch in tissue, making them harder to remove than a smooth splinter. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes quills as hollow and lightweight, about 2–3 inches long; if untreated, they can break or migrate deeper. Embedded quills may cause pain, swelling, or infection, and can injure sensitive areas such as the eyes, joints, chest cavity, or vital organs. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
Removal is painful enough that a dog may struggle or bite defensively. Movement during an attempted extraction can drive quills farther in, while an owner may not see every quill or know how deep it extends. VCA notes that removal without sedation or anesthesia is extremely painful and requires potent pain relief; Merck Veterinary Manual also advises against trying to remove quills at home. Do not cut or trim a quill
Cutting a quill does not make it safer to remove. It can make the quill more likely to splinter and leave pieces in the tissue. Cornell, VCA, and Alberta Animal Health Source all advise against cutting or trimming embedded quills. Alberta Animal Health Source

What to do while arranging veterinary care
- Call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service. Explain that your dog has porcupine quills and arrange prompt assessment.
- Keep your dog calm and as still as possible. Prevent rubbing or pawing at the affected area as best you can.
- Leave the quills alone. Do not pull, cut, twist, probe, or otherwise manipulate them.
- Avoid pressure over the quills. Do not put a muzzle or harness over embedded quills; pressure can push them farther into tissue. Alberta Animal Health Source
- Consider an E-collar only if it can be fitted without touching the quills. Cornell says an Elizabethan collar may help limit facial rubbing or pawing while you seek care. It is only a temporary aid; do not let fitting it press on quills or delay transport. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
What veterinary removal may involve
The veterinarian will assess the quills’ location and depth and may sedate or anesthetize your dog so the team can examine and remove them while managing pain and limiting movement. The examination may include areas where quills are easy to miss, such as the mouth, throat, chest, and legs. Quills are generally removed with gentle traction; a deeply embedded one may require a small incision. The veterinarian decides whether pain medication, antibiotics, or other care is appropriate for the individual case. Cornell notes that antibiotics may be prescribed when quills have been present for more than a day or when incisions are required. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
Not every quill is necessarily found or removed during the first procedure. VCA notes that retained quills may need monitoring because they can migrate and cause complications. Follow the treating veterinarian’s directions for rechecks, medication, and wound care. VCA Animal Hospitals

Watch for complications after removal
Contact your veterinarian if your dog develops new swelling, lameness, drooling, lethargy, difficulty eating, or trouble breathing after treatment. These signs can indicate a complication that needs veterinary assessment. Quills left in tissue can migrate days or weeks later; serious complications can include deep infection or injury to joints, eyes, the brain, or other organs. How to reduce the chance of another encounter
- Keep your dog leashed or closely supervised in wooded or brushy areas, especially around dawn, dusk, and nighttime.
- Avoid areas where porcupines are likely to be when practical, and build a reliable recall to help interrupt wildlife chasing.
- Stay alert even if your dog has been quilled before; Cornell notes that repeat encounters are common, so a previous injury does not guarantee a dog will avoid porcupines in the future. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
