Cats can pass gas now and then, but a new or frequent change is worth watching. There is no veterinary evidence that farting specifically on a person has a distinct medical cause: “on you” describes where you notice it, not what is wrong. Diet changes, sensitivities, parasites and other digestive problems are among the possibilities, and gas alone cannot identify which one applies.
Seven possible reasons your cat is gassy
These are possible cause categories, not a ranking of what is most likely. The veterinary sources do not quantify how often each one causes feline flatulence.

1. A recent or rapid food change
A sudden switch in food can contribute to gas, and even a new bag may differ in formulation enough to affect a sensitive cat. If a veterinarian recommends a diet change, PetMD describes transitioning gradually over seven to 10 days rather than switching abruptly. 2. Sensitivity to a food or protein
A cat may be sensitive to a particular protein source. Don’t keep cycling foods in an attempt to find the cause; ask your veterinarian whether a structured diet trial makes sense.

3. Fiber or other aspects of diet composition
Too much fiber, or a type of fiber that produces gas for that cat, may contribute. This does not mean that fiber or a particular ingredient is universally bad for cats; the whole diet and the cat’s response matter.
4. Intestinal parasites
Worms and other intestinal parasites can be associated with gas, as well as nonspecific signs such as vomiting or diarrhea. A veterinarian may use fecal testing to investigate and direct treatment. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that gastrointestinal parasites have been found in as many as 45% of cats in some populations, and roundworms in 25% to 75% of cats, with higher rates in kittens. Those population figures, from a page updated in June 2018, do not estimate the odds that a particular gassy cat has parasites. 5. Infection
Bacterial or viral infections are among the possible causes of gastrointestinal signs, but gas by itself does not establish that a cat has an infection.
6. Microbial imbalance or inflammatory bowel disease
PetMD includes small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) among possible explanations for excess gas. These conditions require veterinary assessment; flatulence alone is not enough to diagnose either one.

7. Malabsorption or another gastrointestinal disorder
If nutrients are not being absorbed efficiently, digestive signs may result. Other gastrointestinal conditions can also cause illness. Obstruction is a serious example, but ordinary gas alone is not evidence of one; look for the warning signs below.
Is it normal for cats to fart a lot?
Occasional gas can be normal. A noticeable increase, persistent flatulence or particularly foul-smelling gas deserves attention, especially if another symptom appears. Veterinarian Amanda Ardente, DVM, PhD, writes in PetMD’s FAQ: “Passing gas every now and then is normal, but a lot of farting is not common in cats.”

When to call a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian about new or increasing gas, especially when it occurs with any of these changes:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Reduced appetite or a change in activity, including lethargy
- Abdominal discomfort or pain
- A swollen or bloated abdomen
Vomiting and appetite loss can be signs of gastric or small-intestinal obstruction; other possible signs include lethargy, diarrhea, abdominal pain or swelling, dehydration and shock. Obstruction can be life-threatening. These signs warrant prompt veterinary attention, but they do not mean that isolated flatulence indicates an obstruction. What to note before the appointment
A clear timeline can help your veterinarian connect the gas with other changes. Keep track of:
- Your cat’s current food and treats, and any recent changes or new bags
- When the gas started and how often it happens
- Stool consistency and color
- Any vomiting or nausea, appetite changes, or change in activity
The veterinarian will generally ask about symptoms and diet and examine your cat, including checking the abdomen for pain, discomfort or bloating. Depending on the findings, testing may include fecal testing, lab work, abdominal X-rays or ultrasound, endoscopy or culture. Not every cat needs every test.
What you can safely do at home
If the gas began after a food change and your cat otherwise seems well, note what changed and discuss it with your veterinarian. For a vet-recommended diet trial, PetMD describes a gradual transition over seven to 10 days. If no other symptoms are present and testing has not found a cause, a veterinarian may consider a diet trial or probiotics or prebiotics. A veterinarian may also recommend short-term simethicone in some cases; do not give human medication or use it as a long-term fix without veterinary direction.

Don’t treat suspected parasites with an over-the-counter dewormer as a substitute for diagnosis. Cornell notes that parasite treatment can require veterinary-directed medication, and reinfection can occur. Similarly, a prescription or elimination diet, laxative or supplement is not a universal remedy for gas.
