Your cat may want attention when you’re on the phone because you are a social partner and the call changes how available you seem: you stop moving, look away, speak differently, or respond less. Cats’ proximity to people can vary with human attention, and meowing or pawing can be ways to seek interaction. But there is no evidence here that phones themselves trigger the behavior. Watch what happens before and after the interruption to identify the most likely reason.
Why does your cat choose phone time?
A call can make a person less responsive, and that change may matter to a cat. The cat may be seeking social contact, play, food, or a familiar response. If meowing, pawing, or climbing onto you reliably gets you to speak, touch, or look at the cat, that reaction may reinforce the interruption.

These are plausible explanations, not proof that a phone causes the behavior. A study found cats spent significantly more time near attentive people than inattentive people, in both pet and shelter groups; it did not examine phone calls. Research on cats communicating during an unsolvable task also suggests a person’s attentional state can matter, but that setting is not a household call. Cats can recognize and orient to an owner’s voice, too, but that finding does not show that a caller’s voice causes interruptions.

How to work out what your cat is asking for
Notice the timing, the behavior, and what follows it. These clues can help distinguish a learned bid for interaction from a food-related routine or a change that deserves veterinary attention.

- Social contact or play: The interruptions happen across different calls, and the cat settles after play or positive interaction.
- Food: The behavior clusters around a usual meal or treat time. A timed feeder is relevant only if the pattern appears tied to feeding.
- A new or increasing behavior: The vocalizing or interruption is unusual for your cat, is becoming more frequent, or appears alongside other changes. Arrange a veterinary assessment rather than assuming it is attention seeking.
What to do when your cat interrupts a call
Provide predictable play and attention
Build positive interaction into the day rather than relying on the cat to demand it. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association recommends interactive play at least twice daily and emphasizes opportunities for play and predictable human–cat social interaction. If calls are a predictable trigger, schedule a play session beforehand. An interactive cat wand toy can be one option for that play; it is not a guaranteed way to stop interruptions.
Reward calm behavior and offer an alternative
Give attention or a preferred treat when your cat is calm and quiet, rather than making interruptions the most reliable route to a response. If the pattern is predictable, offer an appropriate activity before the call begins. Avoid scolding or physical punishment: the veterinary association’s training guidance warns that punishment can increase protective emotions and undesirable behavior.

Use food tools only for a food-related pattern
If the interruption reliably coincides with a feeding expectation, a timed feeder or treat dispenser may help separate that routine from your availability. It is not a general solution for a cat seeking social contact.
When increased vocalizing needs a vet’s attention
Contact a veterinarian if the behavior is new, increasing, or accompanied by other changes. Possible medical contributors to increased vocalization include hyperthyroidism, hypertension, pain, hearing loss, and cognitive dysfunction. These possibilities do not mean that every cat interrupting a call is ill; they are reasons to investigate a change rather than dismiss it as misbehavior.
