Are You Ready to Adopt a Pet? A Practical Readiness Checklist

A pet is a long-term commitment. Use this checklist to assess your time, budget, housing, household fit, and backup plan before adopting—or consider fostering first.

You’re ready to bring home a pet when your household can consistently meet that individual animal’s needs for time, care, money, a safe home, and backup support. If you’re unsure, ask a shelter or rescue about fostering before making a permanent commitment.

What being ready to adopt really means

Pet ownership takes continuing time, effort, and money. The right decision is not simply whether you want a pet, but whether the animal’s daily needs fit your life now and through foreseeable changes. A dog who needs frequent exercise or attention may not do well with long stretches alone; a puppy may need more frequent feeding, training, and supervision than an adult dog.

Readiness is specific to the animal. Before deciding, describe your typical day and household to shelter or rescue staff, then ask what is known about the animal’s temperament, energy, age, health, and care needs. A good match is one whose needs you can meet—not just one who makes an immediate impression.

Use this checklist before you commit

Time and daily care

  • Can someone reliably handle feeding, attention, exercise, training, and supervision?
  • How long will the pet be alone on a typical day, and is that appropriate for this animal?
  • Who will take responsibility when the usual caregiver is busy, ill, or away?

Budget and unexpected costs

Plan for ongoing food and veterinary care, as well as possible preventive medication, boarding, grooming, licensing, and training. Ask local veterinarians, shelters, and service providers for current estimates that fit the animal’s needs. Include a plan for unexpected veterinary bills rather than budgeting only for routine expenses.

#1 Best Overall

For context—not as a current quote—the ASPCA’s cost table, labeled “2021 UPDATE,” estimated annual costs of $1,391 for a dog and $1,149 for a cat, and first-year costs of $3,221 and $1,904, respectively. Those organization-published estimates combine several expense categories; they are dated figures, not guarantees or individualized budgets. See the ASPCA cost table and its categories.

Housing and household agreement

  • Check that your lease, building, or other housing rules allow the animal.
  • Make sure everyone in the household understands the responsibilities and agrees to the adoption.
  • Consider whether you have appropriate space and can keep the new pet safely apart from hazards or other animals during introductions.

Fit with your life

Think about the animal’s activity level, age, training, known health or behavior needs, and compatibility with household members and other pets. Ask the organization what it knows about the specific animal and what care may be involved. Avoid relying on breed-based assumptions as a substitute for information about that individual.

Backup and future changes

Identify who can help during travel, illness, emergencies, or schedule changes. Consider foreseeable changes to your work, housing, or household, and whether you could still provide appropriate care. If your answers depend on help you have not arranged, put that support in place before adopting.

Prepare your home before the pet arrives

Set up a quiet, safe resting area where the animal can settle without being crowded. Secure doors and remove or block access to hazards. Gather basics suited to the species and confirm any requirements with the adoption organization.

  • For a dog: A leash, collar, ID tag, food and water bowls, and a safe place to rest are common essentials.
  • For a cat: Plan for a litter box and litter, a scratching post, food and water bowls, and a carrier for transport.

Transport rules vary. For example, the ASPCA’s New York City adoption center requires cats and kittens to leave in a secure carrier; that is a location-specific policy, not a universal rule. Ask your organization what it requires. Check the ASPCA NYC adoption process.

Help the new pet settle in

An animal may need time to adjust to unfamiliar people, sounds, and routines. Keep the first days calm, establish a predictable routine, and let the pet observe and approach at its own pace instead of forcing interaction. ASPCA’s 3-3-3 guideline can serve as an orientation tool, not a promise that every animal will follow the same timeline. Arrange a veterinary appointment and ask the adoption organization about any known health or care information.

If you’re not ready to adopt, consider fostering

Fostering provides temporary care for an animal while it awaits adoption or needs time to recover or develop. It can help you learn what pet care involves without taking on a permanent commitment, though the arrangement, responsibilities, and support available depend on the organization. Ask a local shelter or rescue about its fostering process and what it provides. Learn how fostering can help animals and people.

Where to get reliable guidance

For general ownership guidance, the American Veterinary Medical Association advises prospective owners to consider the time and attention a dog needs and to recognize that pet ownership requires an investment of time, effort, and money. Read the AVMA pet-owner guidance. For adoption-specific questions, speak directly with the shelter or rescue handling the animal; fees, policies, available information, and support vary by organization and location.
