If your cat has recently started hiding more, do not assume she is simply anxious or that extra cuddling will solve it. Hiding can be a normal way for a cat to cope, yet a new increase may also be a subtle sign of pain or illness. Contact the veterinarian who knows your cat’s medical history before treating the change as purely behavioural. While you arrange that assessment, let your cat retreat undisturbed and improve the hiding, climbing and escape options in the home.

This article addresses the common concern: “My cat has recently started hiding more. I’ve tried to reassure her but it doesn’t seem to help.”

What hiding can mean

Cats often conceal vulnerability. Moving away, getting up high or disappearing into a sheltered space can be a normal coping strategy, especially when the cat wants distance rather than handling. A cat that hides briefly after a disturbance and then returns to normal may simply be choosing the safest-feeling place.

A change in pattern matters more than the fact of hiding itself. If a cat that was previously visible begins spending much more time under furniture, in cupboards or in another inaccessible place, treat that as information. Cats Protection also identifies stress involving other cats as one possible behavioural cause. Medical and behavioural problems can occur together, so finding a stressful trigger does not rule out a health problem.

Hiding alone cannot establish a diagnosis of anxiety, fear or any other condition. The useful question is not “Which label fits?” but “What changed, and what does a veterinary examination show?”

Why a new increase deserves a veterinary conversation

Cats may show illness or pain through subtle changes rather than obvious distress. A recent increase in hiding is therefore worth discussing with a veterinarian, even when the cat is still eating, using the litter tray or having periods of normal behaviour. The clinician can interpret the change alongside the cat’s age, history, examination findings and any other observations.

Prepare useful observations

Before the appointment, make a short record instead of trying to interpret the behaviour yourself. Note when the hiding began, whether it is constant or intermittent, the places your cat chooses, and what was happening immediately beforehand. Record any household changes, visitors, building work, new animals or encounters with outdoor cats. This gives the veterinarian a timeline without turning your notes into a diagnosis.

Do not wait for reassurance to work

Some cats prefer to move away, climb up high or hide instead of being cuddled or fussed. If reassurance means reaching into a hiding place, repeatedly calling the cat out or blocking the retreat, it can remove the coping option the cat selected. Give the veterinarian the opportunity to assess the underlying change rather than escalating physical reassurance.

What to do after medical causes have been assessed

If the veterinarian rules out medical causes, ask whether a referral to a qualified behaviourist is appropriate. Cats Protection gives a member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors as an example of the type of professional to seek. A behaviourist can assess the home, the cat’s interactions with people and animals, and the circumstances around each hiding episode.

Keep the roles distinct: environmental changes can make a cat feel safer, but they are not a substitute for medical assessment when hiding is new or increasing. Likewise, a behaviour referral is most useful after physical causes have been considered.

Create retreats your cat can choose

Provide several safe places rather than trying to force one “correct” bed. Put retreats where the cat can reach them without crossing a busy route, and make sure she can leave without being cornered. In a multi-cat home, offer more than one option so one animal cannot control access to every refuge.

Low-cost and purpose-made options

A clean cardboard box is an inexpensive way to add a sheltered space. Place it on its side, check that it is stable, and replace it if it becomes damp, damaged or heavily soiled. A purpose-made hideaway bed can be useful when you need a more durable or washable surface. Neither option is universally preferred; the cat’s willingness to use it is the practical test.

Use height as well as floor-level cover

Some cats feel safer when they can watch the room from above. A stable elevated perch, shelf or other secure platform can provide that choice, provided it cannot tip and the cat can get on and off safely. Keep elevated routes clear of hazards and do not place a perch where a startled cat could fall onto a sharp edge or into a confined gap.

Compare retreat choices

Option Useful when Practical checks
Cardboard box You need a quick, low-cost hiding place or want to test whether your cat likes an enclosed retreat. Keep it dry, stable and easy to replace; the source does not rank box designs.
Purpose-made hideaway bed You want a reusable, washable shelter or have limited space for improvised boxes. Check that it is stable, large enough for the cat to turn around and positioned where the cat can exit freely; no particular model is endorsed.
Elevated perch Your cat chooses high locations or needs a lookout away from floor traffic. Prioritise secure fixing, a safe landing area and an unobstructed route down.

Do not pull the cat out, reach into the retreat or repeatedly disturb her while she is hiding. Let her decide when to emerge. You can sit quietly nearby if she seeks company, but allow her to control distance and contact.

Check whether other cats are creating the pressure

Neighbouring cats can cause stress without entering the house. A cat may see another animal through a flap or window, smell it near an entrance, or be surprised by it in a hallway or garden. Inspect doors, cat flaps and windows at the cat’s eye level. Look for repeated staring, blocking or rushing at access points, and consider whether your cat has a route to leave a room without passing the perceived threat.

Control entry through a conventional cat flap

If another cat is entering through an ordinary flap, access control may reduce the problem. A microchip cat flap can be set to recognise your cat’s compatible microchip. Check that the flap works with the chip type and that installation is suitable for the door or wall before buying it.

A magnetic flap is another route named by Cats Protection. It requires your cat to wear the matching magnet on a quick-release collar. Confirm that your cat can safely wear a collar, that the release mechanism is appropriate, and that the magnet will not be lost or confused with another animal’s tag.

Where a new flap is not practical, temporarily closing or blocking the existing opening can prevent unwanted entry while you work out a longer-term arrangement. Plan how your own cat will access food, water, litter and the outdoors during the period when the flap is closed.

Reduce threatening views

If your cat watches other cats through a window, cover the lower section at cat height with an opaque material. The aim is to remove the direct sightline while preserving safe light and ventilation. Do not seal a window in a way that creates a ventilation or fire-safety hazard, and do not assume visual blocking will address odours or sounds from outside.

Access-control choices

Measure Requirements Trade-offs to consider
Microchip cat flap Your cat must have a compatible registered microchip; the door or wall must allow suitable installation. Provides selective entry without a collar, but compatibility, power and installation constraints need checking.
Magnetic flap Your cat wears the required magnet on a quick-release collar. Can restrict entry through the flap, but collar fit, safe release and magnet management matter.
Close or block the existing flap You need a temporary way to stop outside animals using the opening. Simple and reversible, but you must arrange another safe routine for your cat’s indoor or outdoor access.
Opaque covering at cat-height windows A removable, non-hazardous material that blocks the lower sightline. Addresses visual encounters only; it does not control access through doors or eliminate outdoor sounds and smells.

These measures are context-specific. A microchip or magnetic flap is not necessary for every cat that hides; use access control when there is a credible route by which another cat is entering or being seen.

A practical sequence for the next few days

  1. Arrange veterinary advice. Explain that hiding has increased and provide the timeline and observations you recorded. Ask the veterinarian to consider both physical and behavioural possibilities.
  2. Protect the current retreat. Leave the cat’s chosen hiding place accessible and stop reaching in, dragging her out or repeatedly calling her to reassure her.
  3. Add choice. Set up at least one stable floor-level shelter, such as a cardboard box, and one secure elevated option if your cat uses height. Keep exits clear.
  4. Inspect pressure points. Check cat flaps, doors and cat-height windows for opportunities for neighbouring cats to enter or stare in. Use a temporary block or opaque covering where appropriate.
  5. Review the pattern. After the veterinary assessment, follow the clinician’s plan. If medical causes are ruled out and hiding continues, ask about referral to a qualified behaviourist.

Troubleshoot common situations

“She hides only when visitors arrive.”

Keep a retreat available before guests enter and let the cat remain there undisturbed. Do not make visitors reach toward the hiding place. The pattern may reflect a normal coping choice, but mention any recent escalation to the veterinarian.

“He comes out at night, so I am not worried.”

Night-time activity does not explain why the pattern changed. Tell the veterinarian about the timing and how long your cat spends hidden; cats can have intermittent signs.

“I added a bed, but my cat ignores it.”

Do not force the cat into it. Try a different location, an open box or a higher perch, and keep the route in and out unobstructed. Cats choose among retreats according to their own sense of safety.

“A neighbour’s cat keeps appearing at the flap.”

Confirm the entry route, then choose a control that fits your household: a compatible microchip flap, a magnetic flap with a safe quick-release collar, or temporary closure. If the cat can still see the intruder through a low window, block that sightline as well.

Evidence behind this guidance

The advice reflects Cats Protection’s “Behaviour focus: hiding” article, published Friday, October 16, 2015, which identifies Nicky Trevorrow as its Behaviour Manager. The article recommends veterinary discussion for increased hiding, safe retreats and high places, non-interference while a cat hides, and attention to neighbouring-cat access and sightlines. Read the source at Cats Protection’s behaviour guidance on hiding.
