A cat that welcomes petting and then suddenly bites or swats may be reacting to pain, fear, overstimulation, play, or another trigger—not deliberately changing personality. Because a new or unexpected aggression change can have a medical cause, start by arranging a veterinary assessment rather than assuming it is simply a behavior problem.
Why can a cat turn around and bite while you pet her?
Some cats tolerate touch only for a short time. Continued stroking, restraint, or an approach the cat does not want may become unpleasant and lead to a bite or swat. Fear, miscommunication, and pain can also contribute, and more than one factor may be involved. A single incident does not establish the cause.

What might explain a sudden change in behavior?
Pain or illness
Aggression can accompany medical problems. Cornell lists hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis, dental disease, and central nervous system problems among possible contributors. VCA also describes pain, mobility problems, sensory decline, organ dysfunction, hormonal or urinary disease, and neurologic conditions as possible influences on behavior. These are possibilities for a veterinarian to assess, not diagnoses to make at home. Fear or an environmental trigger
An unfamiliar person or animal, a loud noise, or an unpleasant association can prompt a fear response. If you can identify a trigger, reduce the cat’s exposure to it where practical. A veterinarian can help decide whether additional behavior management is appropriate.
Redirected arousal
A cat worked up by something it cannot reach—such as an outdoor cat or a loud noise—may direct its reaction toward a nearby person or another animal. Avoid known triggers when possible. If cats are actively fighting, do not grab an aroused cat; create distance safely and seek professional guidance.

Play, territory, or conflict between household cats
Play aggression and territorial aggression are distinct patterns, and conflict between cats who share a home can have several contributors, including fear, territorial behavior, redirected arousal, or incompatibility. Why should older cats with a behavior change be checked?
A change in an older cat’s behavior should not automatically be dismissed as an inevitable part of aging. Pain, reduced mobility, or disease may be involved. What should you do after an aggressive episode?
Keep people and animals safe
- Give an aroused cat space; do not punish, grab, or try to force contact.
- Avoid known triggers where practical, and keep children away from a cat with a history of biting or petting-related aggression.
- Do not touch an area that seems painful. Ask a veterinarian how to handle the cat safely.
Physical punishment can increase fear or worsen aggression. Cornell advises consulting a veterinarian before relying on environmental or behavior changes alone.
Record what happened
Write down the sequence surrounding an episode so you can describe it to the veterinarian. Include what happened just beforehand; who or what was nearby; whether the cat was approached, touched, picked up, or blocked; where it happened; and whether contact with a particular body area was involved. Note any changes in jumping, stiffness, grooming, appetite, elimination, hiding, or activity. This history can help guide assessment, but it is not a home diagnostic test.
