A cat may refuse wet food because of its flavor or texture, but a change in appetite can also signal illness, nausea, or mouth pain. First make sure your cat is eating enough of some food and watch for signs of trouble; the goal is not to force a wet-food diet. If your cat has stopped eating, seems unwell, or wants food but cannot chew or swallow comfortably, contact a veterinarian promptly.
When should I worry if my cat isn’t eating?
Take a sudden loss of appetite seriously. Cornell’s guidance says appetite loss can seriously affect a mature cat in as little as 24 hours; for a kitten younger than six weeks, avoiding food for 12 hours can pose a lethal threat. These are warning thresholds, not safe waiting periods for every cat. Call sooner if your cat is very young, has a chronic condition, or has stopped eating entirely.
- Contact a veterinarian promptly for complete food refusal, weight loss, vomiting, pain, weakness, lethargy, signs of dehydration, or another sudden change.
- If your cat approaches food but seems unable to chew or swallow, seek veterinary assessment rather than trying to solve it by changing flavors.
- Do not wait for a threshold if your cat’s condition is worsening or you are concerned.
Cornell veterinarian Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, says, “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.” The veterinarian may recommend tests or imaging based on the examination.
Why won’t my cat eat wet food?
Refusing one kind of food is not necessarily the same as losing appetite. Note whether your cat eats its usual dry food or treats, how much it eats, and whether the problem is limited to a particular wet-food texture or flavor. That information can help distinguish reluctance about a new food from a broader appetite or eating problem.

Flavor or texture preference
Canned foods vary in flavor and texture, and some cats prefer dry food or a particular familiar option. VCA recommends considering medical causes before describing a cat as a picky eater. A preference is more plausible when the cat otherwise eats normally, but it does not rule out illness.
Reluctance about a new food
Cats can be wary of unfamiliar foods and may take weeks to accept one. VCA recommends offering the new food in a separate container rather than immediately mixing it with the familiar food. If mixing makes the cat reject a meal it previously ate, stop and protect the familiar food intake.

Mouth pain or difficulty eating
Dental disease, sore gums, and other mouth problems can make chewing painful. A cat may show interest in food yet struggle to eat it. Have a veterinarian assess this behavior instead of assuming the cat dislikes the food.
Nausea or another illness
Appetite loss can accompany many conditions. Cornell lists kidney disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, and fever among possible associations; that list does not diagnose an individual cat. A veterinarian can determine whether an examination, laboratory tests, or imaging are appropriate.

Stress or the feeding setup
A new animal, disruption at home, or boarding may affect appetite, but do not assume stress is the cause before considering medical problems. Noise, foot traffic, dirty dishes, other animals, and a litter box near the feeding area can also make a cat less willing to eat.
How do I get my cat to eat wet food?
Try food changes only if your cat is otherwise well and a veterinarian has not prescribed a specific diet. Keep the familiar food available throughout the process and measure what your cat actually eats. If intake falls or concerning signs appear, stop experimenting and call your veterinarian.

- Offer the foods separately. Put a small serving of wet food in a clean dish beside the usual food. This lets your cat investigate without risking rejection of the familiar meal.
- Change one acceptance factor at a time. Try a different texture, such as pâté instead of chunks in gravy, or another flavor. Avoid repeatedly switching foods so much that it becomes hard to tell how much your cat is eating.
- Warm a small portion gently. Slightly warming wet food toward body temperature may improve palatability, according to International Cat Care. Do not serve it hot; check the temperature before offering it.
- Make the feeding spot calm and accessible. Choose a quiet, low-traffic area. Keep the dish clean and away from the litter box, and ensure another animal cannot block your cat’s access.
- Follow any prescribed diet instructions. A cat with a medical condition may need a specific nutritional plan. Ask the veterinarian before replacing or altering a therapeutic diet.
Is it normal for my cat to refuse canned food?
Some cats prefer dry food or particular flavors and textures, so refusal of wet food alone does not establish that something is wrong. What matters is whether your cat is eating enough overall and behaving normally. A sudden change, reduced intake across foods, or signs of pain or illness should not be treated as a routine preference.
Wet food is not a requirement for every cat simply because it is wet. Cornell says canned food is typically 70–80 percent water and can be fed in addition to or instead of dry food; individual acceptance varies. If your cat eats a nutritionally appropriate familiar food, do not let it go hungry in an effort to make it accept canned food.

What should I avoid?
- Do not force food into your cat’s mouth or syringe-feed as a casual home fix. Cornell warns that force-feeding can worsen food aversion, and VCA notes aspiration risk. Use assisted feeding only under specific veterinary instruction.
- Do not give appetite medicines or human medications unless a veterinarian prescribes them for your cat.
- Do not replace a prescribed therapeutic diet with a general food recommendation without checking with the veterinarian.
- Do not let a food transition become a fast. Keep track of actual intake and prioritize your cat eating enough while you investigate the refusal.
