If your cat turns down wet food but is eating normally otherwise, you can feed a commercial dry cat food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Keep clean, fresh water available. A cat refusing all food, losing weight, or needing a prescribed diet should be assessed by a veterinarian—not treated as a simple preference for dry food.
What can you feed instead of wet food?
Choose a commercially prepared dry food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Dry food can meet a cat’s nutritional needs; wet food is not the only complete format. Once nutritional adequacy is established, Cornell University’s Feline Health Center says the choice of dry, canned, or a combination can depend on the cat’s preference.
Check the package’s nutritional adequacy statement and intended life stage. Kittens, adult cats, pregnant cats, and nursing cats have different nutritional requirements. Treats and foods labeled for supplemental or occasional feeding are not substitutes for a complete diet. If your cat has a medical condition or is on a prescribed diet, ask the veterinarian managing that condition before changing foods.
What is the trade-off between dry and wet food?
The main format difference described by Cornell is moisture. Dry food contains about 6–10% water, while canned food has at least 75% moisture. Cornell’s feeding-frequency guidance describes wet food as typically 70–80% water. These are general descriptions of food formats, not a rule that every cat must eat wet food.

If your cat eats only dry food, make clean, fresh water easy to access at all times. Merck Veterinary Manual recommends multiple clean water bowls; a fountain is optional and may encourage some cats to drink, but it is not a treatment or a requirement.
When is wet-food refusal a health concern?
A cat that rejects wet food but continues to eat its usual dry food is different from a cat refusing all food. Merck Veterinary Manual advises contacting a veterinarian right away if a cat refuses to eat for more than a day. Contact your veterinarian sooner if appetite has broadly declined, your cat is losing weight, or you are concerned about a change in eating.

Do not withhold the food your cat will eat in an attempt to force acceptance of wet food. If a veterinarian has prescribed a specific diet, ask how to handle refusal rather than substituting a different food on your own.

- Choose a quiet location away from other animals and litter boxes.
- Keep fresh water available in clean bowls.
These adjustments may help when the environment is a factor, but they do not replace veterinary advice if your cat is eating less overall or losing weight.

Do not replace a complete diet with treats, an improvised homemade recipe, human food, supplements, or raw food without veterinary guidance. Cats have specific nutritional needs, and a diet that is not properly balanced can be harmful. For an individualized feeding plan or a medical diet, consult your veterinarian.
