Wetness alone does not show whether a cat is healthy or ill. What matters is whether you are seeing a moist surface or ongoing nasal discharge—and whether other symptoms are present.
Why a cat’s nose may be wet
Grooming can leave saliva on the nose, and a cat may dampen it while drinking. Tear drainage and moisture on the nasal skin can also contribute. Sun exposure or resting near a heat source may affect how the nose feels. These are ordinary explanations, not health tests.

A cat’s nose can be warm or dry at times as well as cool and moist. It does not need to be cold and wet all day. The useful distinction is between surface moisture and a runny nose or visible discharge.

How to tell normal moisture from nasal discharge
Ordinary moisture is a damp surface without persistent fluid coming from the nostrils. Discharge is fluid that continues to appear or runs from the nose; it may be clear, colored, or bloody. Note whether it persists and whether your cat is sneezing, coughing, congested, breathing noisily, pawing at the face, or showing eye discharge, reduced appetite, or lower energy.

Discharge color alone cannot identify its cause. A runny nose may be associated with respiratory infection or inflammation, fungal disease, allergies, a foreign body, dental disease, or nasal polyps and other masses. These possibilities require veterinary assessment; they are not a diagnosis based on appearance.
When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary appointment
Contact your veterinarian if your cat has a runny nose or visible discharge, particularly if it persists or comes with other symptoms. A veterinarian can take a history and examine your cat. Depending on the findings, evaluation may include blood work, analysis of nasal material, PCR testing, imaging, or rhinoscopy. Testing does not always identify a single cause, and care depends on the underlying problem.

Seek urgent care for warning signs
Do not wait and see if your cat is having difficulty breathing or has bloody nasal discharge. High fever or extreme lethargy are also emergency warning signs. Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly.
What you can do while your cat has respiratory symptoms
For a cat with respiratory signs, supportive care may make resting and eating easier, but it does not establish or cure the underlying cause. Orange County Animal Care recommends a quiet, warm resting place; gently wiping the nose and eyes with a soft cloth moistened with warm water; encouraging eating; and using a humidifier or a steamy bathroom for congestion.

That agency advises contacting a veterinarian if a cat does not eat for more than 24 hours, has green or yellow discharge, has difficulty breathing, is depressed or unresponsive, has prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, or does not improve after a week of home care. Follow your own veterinarian’s advice for your cat. Do not give medication or supplements unless a veterinarian directs you to.

Some causes of respiratory signs are contagious between cats. Cornell identifies feline herpesvirus and calicivirus as important respiratory pathogens; vaccination can reduce disease severity, but it does not prevent every infection. Ordinary nose moisture by itself is not evidence of infection.

Cornell’s 2018 estimates illustrate why population context matters: about 10% of cats housed in small groups were infected with feline calicivirus, compared with up to 90% in crowded settings such as shelters and breeding catteries. The same source reported that approximately 20% of cats with upper respiratory signs and about 3% of healthy-looking cats carried Chlamydia felis. These figures describe particular populations and organisms; they do not measure the chance that a wet nose signals illness.
