A pet can seem perfectly well while routine screening reveals a change worth investigating. Annual wellness testing can help establish a health baseline and give a veterinarian clues about problems such as anemia, infection, kidney changes, or high blood pressure. It is not a guarantee that disease will be found early, and it does not replace a physical examination.

Which tests make sense—and how often—depends on your pet’s species, life stage, health history, breed, and lifestyle. Ask your veterinarian what each recommended test is intended to assess and what follow-up an unusual result might require.

What can routine pet bloodwork and a urine test detect?

Screening tests look at different parts of health. A complete blood count, blood chemistry panel, urinalysis, and blood-pressure measurement are common components of wellness testing, but they are not interchangeable. Results are most informative when considered alongside your pet’s examination, history, and any symptoms.

Complete blood count (CBC)

A CBC evaluates information about blood cells. It can help a veterinarian look for anemia, infection, and other changes, but it is not a test for every illness. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) describes its role in The ABCs of Dog Blood Work.

Blood chemistry

Chemistry testing measures substances in the blood that provide information about organ function and other health indicators. AAHA’s senior-care guidance includes values such as total protein, albumin, ALT, glucose, BUN, creatinine, electrolytes, calcium, and SDMA when available. A value outside its reference range is a clue to interpret—not a diagnosis by itself.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis can assess urine concentration and sediment, among other features. AAHA identifies it as useful in evaluating kidney function and detecting urinary tract infection or kidney disease. The veterinarian may interpret urine findings alongside blood results and symptoms; a urine result alone does not settle the cause of a change.

Blood pressure

Blood-pressure measurement can help identify high blood pressure, which AAHA notes is common in older pets. It is included in the association’s senior-pet recommendations and educational guidance.

KIT4CAT CheckUp at Home Cat Wellness Test Kit | 2lb Hydrophobic Litter keeps urine on top, 2 Test Strips for The Detection of The 4 Most Common Health Indicators - pH, Protein, Glucose, Blood in urine
  • Natural sand is heavy, to avoid high costs as result of shipping and logistics, and after many years of testing, we arrived at an optimized amount of sand that is enough for the vast majority of cats to use once, yet still remain affordable. The amount of sand supplied in the 3 bags is meant for a one-time use all at once.
  • Unlike Other Non-absorbing products, our Cat Litter has a patented Hydrophobic coating, this unique feature allows urine to rest on top of the sand no matter how much your cat tries to bury it, it will pop right back up easily when you move the sand from on top of it.
  • Cats Love it! Its the only 100% Natural True Hydrophobic Sand That is Non-toxic and Odorless, Unlike Other Brands That Do Not Use Natural Sand. (Cats are picky animals, some more than others, and will take time to use the sand)
  • Unlike cystocentesis which involves an expensive invasive procedure, this method of Cat urine collection is clean, easy, quick and simple, and most importantly non-invasive, which can be done at-home before a visit at the Vet.
  • Early detection is important! Stay on top of your Cats health with the 2 testing Strips included and test for the 4 most common indicators for your pet's health - Glucose, Blood in the urine, pH, and Protein.

Other tests depend on the pet

Depending on species, age, exposure, location, examination findings, or a specific clinical concern, a veterinarian may discuss fecal parasite testing, heartworm or tick-borne disease testing, thyroid testing, breed-specific screening, or imaging. These are not a universal panel for every dog or cat; AAHA recommends imaging a region of interest when clinically indicated.

Why test a pet that seems healthy?

A screening result can provide a starting point for comparison over time. A new abnormality—or a change from a pet’s earlier results—may prompt the veterinarian to examine the pet more closely, repeat a test, or recommend further diagnostics. This can make screening useful even when no obvious symptoms are present.

As Bryan T. Clarke, DVM, DABVP, author of AAHA’s article on wellness testing, puts it: “Screening testing isn’t just about finding illness; it’s also about confirming wellness,” AAHA explains. A reassuring result is a snapshot, however, not proof that a pet is free of every disease. New symptoms still deserve veterinary advice, even after recent testing.

How often should a pet have wellness testing?

AAHA says most pets generally benefit from annual wellness testing. Senior pets and pets with ongoing health conditions may need more frequent monitoring. The right schedule is individualized rather than a fixed panel or interval for all pets.

Senior dogs and cats

AAHA’s 2023 Senior Care Guidelines recommend a senior medical workup once or twice a year. Their diagnostic frequency table lists comprehensive CBC, chemistry, and urinalysis every 6–12 months for senior dogs and cats. These are senior-care recommendations, not a universal schedule for younger or otherwise healthy pets. See AAHA’s diagnostic test frequency table.

AAHA’s 2024 educational recommendations say senior dogs older than 7 years and cats older than 10 years should be examined every six months. Those ages are guidance, not a definition that fits every animal: senior status can vary with size, breed, and expected lifespan. The association’s senior-pet care recommendations provide that context.

Parasite and exposure-related testing

AAHA’s senior-care table gives lifestyle-dependent ranges for fecal testing: dogs 1–4 times per year and cats 1–2 times per year. It also lists annual tick-borne disease and heartworm testing for dogs. Exposure, geography, and individual risk matter, so these figures should be discussed with the veterinarian rather than applied automatically to every pet.

How to decide which tests are appropriate

At a wellness visit, ask the veterinarian to connect each proposed test to a question about your individual pet. Useful considerations include:

  • Species and life stage: Dogs and cats have different screening needs, and a senior-care plan differs from one for a younger pet.
  • Health history and current signs: Prior results, chronic conditions, medications, and anything that seems “off” can change what should be checked.
  • Breed and lifestyle: Breed-related risks, outdoor activity, travel, and exposure to parasites or infectious disease may affect the plan.
  • What a result can establish: Ask what the test measures, what an abnormal result might mean, and whether it would need confirmation or additional testing.
  • How results will be used: A baseline or trend may inform follow-up, but a single normal result cannot rule out every condition.

Do not order or interpret tests independently. The clinic should advise you about specimen handling and any preparation for a particular test; do not fast your pet, withhold medication, or collect a sample unless the veterinarian or clinic gives specific instructions.

What an abnormal or normal result means

An abnormal screening result is a reason for veterinary interpretation, not a diagnosis on its own. Depending on the finding and the pet, the veterinarian may recommend a physical examination, repeat testing, or additional diagnostics. Some changes need prompt attention; others may be interpreted in light of the pet’s history or followed over time.

A normal result also has limits: it describes what the test showed at that time and does not exclude every disease. If your pet develops new symptoms, contact the veterinarian rather than relying on a recent screening result. AAHA’s annual checkup guidance explains the role of regular veterinary visits.
