That is one cat’s experience, not proof that fountains change every cat’s behavior or make cats drink more.
Why might a cat paw at its water bowl?
A cat may be reacting to the bowl, the water, or the spot where it is placed. In Kanowski’s account, Zelda repeatedly swirled her paw in the water. The article does not establish why she did it; it describes a household observation rather than a diagnosis or controlled test.

Kanowski reconsidered Zelda’s drinking setup after hearing about a client’s cat that preferred drinking from a toilet. She suggests checking the drinking location, the bowl material, nearby food, and whether moving water appeals to the cat.

- Check the location. Consider whether the water is in a visible, low-traffic spot where your cat can drink without being disturbed.
- Try another bowl material. Kanowski suggests ceramic or stainless steel instead of plastic. This is a practical option to test, not a guaranteed solution.
- Give water some distance from food. If the water sits immediately beside the food bowl, try placing it separately and see whether your cat responds.
- Notice your cat’s response to movement. Some cats may find moving water appealing, but that does not mean every cat will prefer it.
What did the fountain change for Zelda?
Kanowski acquired a multi-level ceramic fountain that kept water moving and placed it in a quiet, dog-free office. She reports that Zelda stopped pawing at the bowl afterward. The account does not measure Zelda’s water intake or compare the fountain with other changes under controlled conditions.

The story does not name the fountain’s brand or model. It therefore cannot support a recommendation for a particular product. A ceramic cat water fountain is one category to consider if you want to try moving water, rather than a specific model endorsed by Kanowski.
Does a cat need a fountain to drink enough?
No. A related Catster vet-reviewed overview says cats do not need a fountain to drink, although some may find one appealing. It also reports that a 2010 study involving 13 cats failed to prove that cats drinking from fountains had more dilute urine. That reported finding does not establish that fountains prevent urinary problems or reliably increase water intake. How to choose and maintain a fountain
Compare practical features
Catster’s guide identifies size, material, cleaning, and filter type and replacement as comparison factors. For a large or multi-cat household, consider reservoir capacity. Check that the unit can be disassembled and cleaned easily, and confirm that compatible replacement filters are available. Ceramic and stainless-steel models may be easier to clean than plastic, according to the guide; ceramic can crack. These are guide-level considerations, not comparative test results.

Keep it safe and clean
- Choose a fountain designed for pets, not an ornamental or garden fountain that may use materials unsuitable for drinking water.
- Protect the cord from chewing and place it where your cat cannot easily damage it.
- Keep the reservoir topped up; Kanowski cautions that running low on water can damage the motor.
- Clean the fountain at least weekly, as the story advises. Catster’s related guide gives a filter replacement interval of 4 to 6 weeks depending on use; follow the selected fountain’s manual and compatible-filter instructions.
When to look beyond the bowl setup
A change in where or how a cat drinks is not enough to establish a health problem, and a fountain is not a substitute for veterinary advice. If you are concerned about your cat’s drinking or notice a broader change in its behavior, contact your veterinarian rather than relying on a bowl or fountain adjustment alone.
