The United States does not have ten currently established wild cat species. The defensible list is six species with present or documented recent U.S. relevance—bobcat, Canada lynx, cougar, jaguar, ocelot and jaguarundi—plus special entries such as the Florida panther (a cougar population) and the Texas margay (a historically reported subspecies). Jaguarundi and margay should not be presented as secure current U.S. populations.
What wild cats are actually found in the United States?
“Ten wild cat species found across the United States” is a misleading biological count. Federal wildlife records support six cat species that either live in the country now or have documented recent relevance. Two additional names commonly appear in broader lists, but they represent a cougar population or a historical subspecies rather than separate, established species. One of the six species, the jaguarundi, has no proven current Texas population.

| Bobcat (Lynx rufus) | Species | Widespread and current | Nearly the entire contiguous United States |
| Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) | Species | Current; lower-48 population federally threatened | Northern and mountainous portions of the country |
| Cougar, mountain lion or puma (Puma concolor) | Species | Current in much of the West and Florida | Western states, with the Florida panther population in southern Florida |
| Florida panther | Imperiled cougar population/subspecies | Current but highly imperiled | Southern Florida |
| Jaguar (Panthera onca) | Species | Rare U.S. visitor; no documented U.S. breeding for more than a century | Primarily the Southwest, especially Arizona |
| Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) | Species | Endangered and current in Texas | Dense thorny habitat in South Texas |
| Jaguarundi (Herpailurus/Puma yagouaroundi) | Species; scientific placement varies | Historical or unconfirmed in the modern United States | Texas records, with the last confirmed record in 1986 |
| Texas margay (Leopardus wiedii cooperi) | Subspecies | Historical; no established current U.S. population demonstrated | Historical Texas reports |
That is why a careful field guide may discuss eight U.S.-relevant entries while rejecting the claim that all eight are separate, resident species. The evidence does not establish two additional current U.S. cat species needed to make a scientifically sound list of ten.

Species and special cases, one by one
1. Bobcat
The bobcat is the most broadly distributed native wild cat in the contiguous United States. It occupies forests, deserts, scrub, mountains, farmland edges and suburban mosaics, provided prey and cover are available. Its adaptability explains why people encounter it in so many regions.
A bobcat is considerably smaller than a cougar and has a conspicuously short tail, usually ending in a dark or black tip. The coat ranges from gray to reddish brown and is commonly marked with spots or bars. Ear tufts are present but generally less dramatic than those of a Canada lynx. Size varies geographically, so body size alone is not a reliable identification feature.
2. Canada lynx
Canada lynx are specialized northern cats. In the lower 48 states, the resident breeding populations identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service occur in northern Maine and New Hampshire, northeastern Minnesota, northwestern Montana and northern Idaho, north-central Washington, and western Colorado. Alaska has a much broader and more secure distribution.
The lower-48 population is federally threatened. The lynx’s exceptionally large paws, long hind legs, long black ear tufts and short, black-tipped tail distinguish it from the more common bobcat outside Alaska. Oversized paws spread the cat’s weight over snow, while the longer hind legs and high-rumped profile help it move through deep winter conditions. A bobcat can also live in snowy country, but it lacks the same combination of snowshoe-like feet, long legs and prominent ear tufts.
3. Cougar, mountain lion, puma or catamount
Puma concolor has many regional names: cougar, mountain lion, puma and catamount all refer to the same species. It is much larger than a bobcat or lynx and has a long, cylindrical tail that may approach one-third of its total length. Adults usually have an unspotted tawny, gray-brown or reddish coat; black-tipped ears and tail are common.

Cougars remain established across much of the western United States, from rugged mountains to desert ranges and forested landscapes. They are secretive, mostly solitary predators that use large home ranges and avoid people when possible. The species formerly occupied much of the East and Southeast, but it was eliminated from most of that historical range.
4. Florida panther: a cougar conservation case, not a separate species
The Florida panther is a highly imperiled Florida population or subspecies of cougar, not an additional species distinct from Puma concolor. “Panther” is a regional name that can cause confusion, especially when older accounts use it for several different cats.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Historically, cougars ranged throughout the southeastern United States. The surviving Florida population faced severe isolation and inbreeding. Wildlife managers introduced female Texas pumas, a form of genetic management that increased panther numbers, genetic diversity and survival. This intervention is a useful example of conservation biology in practice: a named population can warrant special legal and management attention without becoming a separate species.
5. Jaguar
The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas. It is heavier and more robust than a cougar and has a broad head, powerful shoulders and a coat patterned with dark rosettes. Some rosettes contain central spots, a pattern that helps separate a jaguar from the plain-colored coat of an adult cougar.
Jaguars still reach the southwestern United States, but U.S. records are rare and are believed largely to involve males dispersing north from Mexico. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says breeding in the United States has not been documented in more than 100 years. Arizona retains designated jaguar critical habitat after a 2024 revision, reflecting the species’ legal relevance even though regular U.S. residency is uncommon.

Globally, jaguars currently occur in 19 countries, and more than 99 percent of their range lies in Central and South America. A photograph or verified track in Arizona or another southwestern state therefore represents the northern edge of a much larger continental range, not evidence of a widespread U.S. population.

6. Ocelot
Ocelots are small, spotted cats with dark chain-like markings, elongated spots and bands, and a strongly patterned face and tail. They depend on dense cover for hunting and shelter. In the United States, that habitat is concentrated in South Texas thornscrub.
The ocelot is endangered in the United States. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fact sheet reported fewer than 100 U.S. ocelots, and a 2023 agency release described two isolated South Texas breeding populations totaling fewer than 100 individuals. Those figures describe the U.S. population, not the much larger population elsewhere in the species’ range.
Road mortality, habitat loss and fragmentation are central threats in South Texas. Once roaming widely across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Arizona, U.S. ocelots have been reduced to a small group in South Texas largely because habitat was lost. Maintaining connected thorny cover and reducing vehicle deaths are therefore more important than simply protecting isolated patches.
7. Jaguarundi
The jaguarundi is a long-bodied, short-legged cat whose coat may be reddish, brownish or nearly black. Its appearance is unlike the heavily spotted ocelot or the large, muscular jaguar. Scientific sources place it in Herpailurus or Puma, so the genus name varies among references.

Do not describe the jaguarundi as a secure resident of Texas. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service analysis says no jaguarundis are currently proven to reside there; the last confirmed Texas record was a road-killed animal near Brownsville in 1986. Older reports and unverified sightings explain why the species appears in lists of U.S. cats, but they do not demonstrate a current breeding population.
8. Texas margay
The Texas margay, Leopardus wiedii cooperi, is a subspecific entry rather than a separate species. Margays are small, heavily patterned forest cats known for climbing ability. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a Texas margay subspecies profile, and its ocelot recovery-plan appendix discusses historical U.S. information.
The available evidence does not establish a current wild U.S. margay population. It is therefore appropriate to label the Texas margay historical or possibly extirpated in U.S. discussions, not to present it as a routinely found Texas cat.

When a cat is seen briefly, use several traits together rather than relying on color or a single photograph.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Trait | Bobcat | Canada lynx | Cougar | Jaguar | Ocelot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overall size | Small to medium | Medium, usually rangier than a bobcat | Large | Largest of these American cats | Small |
| Tail | Short, often banded, dark tip | Short, black tip | Long and heavy | Longer than a lynx or bobcat | Long, ringed and patterned |
| Coat | Usually mottled or spotted | Gray-brown, often lightly spotted | Typically plain tawny or gray-brown | Rosettes, often with central spots | Dark chain-like spots and bands |
| Distinctive adaptation | Short tail and compact build | Very large paws, long hind legs, long black ear tufts | Long tail and powerful body | Robust head and shoulders | Dense patterned coat and thornscrub association |
Bobcat versus Canada lynx
Check the feet first if tracks are visible. Canada lynx have exceptionally large paws relative to their body, an adaptation for snow. Then look for long black ear tufts, noticeably long hind legs and a short tail with a black tip. Bobcats generally have smaller feet, shorter legs and a less pronounced ear-tuft profile.

Cougar versus jaguar
An adult cougar is generally plain-coated and long-tailed. A jaguar is more compact and muscular, with bold rosettes. Lighting can hide spots, and young cougars may show faint markings, so use multiple features and do not identify a cat from color alone.
Ocelot versus the larger cats
An ocelot’s chain-like spots, banded tail and small size are distinctive. Its dependence on thick thorny cover is also a useful geographic clue in the United States: a spotted cat in South Texas scrub is more plausibly an ocelot than a jaguar.
Where each cat occurs
- Nationwide pattern: Bobcats occupy almost the entire contiguous United States.
- Northern and mountain pattern: Canada lynx are tied to northern forests and high-elevation snow country, with federally recognized lower-48 breeding areas in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, northern Rockies, Washington and Colorado.
- Western pattern: Cougars are established through much of the West, while the Florida panther represents the isolated southeastern remnant.
- Southwestern edge: Jaguars may appear as rare dispersers from Mexico; Arizona has designated critical habitat.
- South Texas stronghold: U.S. ocelots depend on fragmented thornscrub and survive in two isolated breeding populations described by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2023.
- Historical Texas records: Jaguarundi and Texas margay references should be treated as unconfirmed or historical rather than evidence of secure current populations.
Conservation status and what it means for sightings
Legal status differs sharply among these cats. Canada lynx are federally threatened in the lower 48. Ocelots are endangered in the United States. Jaguars receive habitat protection in Arizona despite their rarity. The Florida panther is managed as an imperiled cougar population, with genetic intervention used to improve survival. Bobcats and most cougar populations are not covered by the same federal endangered-species designation, but state hunting, trapping and reporting rules can still apply.

For a member of the public, the practical rule is simple: observe from a distance, never feed or approach a wild cat, keep pets under control, and report an unusual sighting to the relevant state wildlife agency. Photographs, location, date, time and the animal’s behavior are more useful than an unverified species label. Do not pursue an animal to obtain a picture.
Why online lists reach “ten”
Different lists combine unlike categories. A writer may count a species, a subspecies, a named population and a historical record as separate “cats.” The Florida panther is then added to the cougar, the Texas margay is counted alongside the margay species, and jaguarundi reports are treated as proof of a current Texas population. That method produces a larger number but obscures the biological and conservation distinctions readers need.
A reliable list should state whether each entry is a species, subspecies or population; whether it is present, historical or unconfirmed in the United States; and whether the evidence describes a breeding population or a single dispersing animal. Using those tests, six species have current or documented recent U.S. relevance, while the Florida panther and Texas margay are special cases rather than additional established species.
