Black Mountain is Kentucky’s highest mountain at 4,139 feet. In a historical survey of mixed mesophytic forest at roughly 3,900–4,000 feet on Big Black Mountain, observers recorded ten notably common bird species, led by Canada warblers and black-throated blue warblers. Those figures are estimates of singing males in one sampled forest type—not a current census of the summit.

Other animals are documented on upper Black Mountain by Kentucky conservation agencies. They include the Black Mountain salamander, Indiana bat and Wehrle’s salamander. American black bears use the broader eastern Kentucky region, but the available evidence does not establish a particular bear sighting at the summit. The mountain’s conservation easement is currently labeled “Research Only,” so wildlife observations must not be treated as permission to enter sensitive habitat.

What animals are documented on Kentucky’s tallest mountain?

The most specific list comes from an ornithological survey of “moderately disturbed climax mixed mesophytic forest” at 3,900–4,000 feet on Big Black Mountain in Harlan County. The accessible record does not show the publication year or author, and the counts are historical. It reports estimated singing males per 100 acres for the twelve most numerous species. The first ten entries are the birds below.

Bird Estimated singing males per 100 acres How to interpret the record
Canada warbler 25 Highest individual estimate in the survey table
Black-throated blue warbler 19 High-elevation forest record
Veery 18 High-elevation forest record
Red-eyed vireo 15 High-elevation forest record
Ovenbird 14 High-elevation forest record
Slate-colored junco 12 Historical common name used in the source table
Hooded warbler 11 High-elevation forest record
Black-and-white warbler 10 High-elevation forest record
Rose-breasted grosbeak 8 High-elevation forest record
Wood thrush 7 Lowest of the ten listed estimates

The same table also names American redstart and rufous-sided towhee at seven estimated singing males each. Its stated total for twelve species is 153, while the listed values do not add up to that number (the ten entries above total 151, and adding the two sevens would produce 165). Because the arithmetic cannot be reconciled from the accessible record, treat the individual figures as historical table values and do not use 153 as a validated total.

The ten high-elevation birds

1. Canada warbler

Canada warbler has the largest estimate in the table: 25 singing males per 100 acres. It is a small, active warbler associated with dense understory, where its bright plumage and bold eye-ring can be difficult to see through thick vegetation. The number describes territorial singing males detected in the sampled forest, not every Canada warbler on Black Mountain or a present-day population.

2. Black-throated blue warbler

The survey estimated 19 singing males per 100 acres. Males are recognizable by their deep blue-and-black coloring and white wing patch; females are mostly olive-green. The record places the species in the mountain’s high-elevation forest community, but it does not establish whether the same density persists today.

3. Veery

Veeries ranked third at 18 estimated singing males per 100 acres. This thrush is usually detected by its distinctive song before it is seen. A veery record in the survey indicates use of the forest at 3,900–4,000 feet, not a claim that birds remain on the exposed summit or occupy every part of the mountain.

4. Red-eyed vireo

Red-eyed vireos were estimated at 15 singing males per 100 acres. Their repeated, phrase-like songs carry through leafy forest, while the birds themselves often stay high in the canopy. The survey’s method makes vocal detection central: a singing-male estimate should not be read as a count of nests, females or fledglings.

5. Ovenbird

Ovenbird came in at 14 singing males per 100 acres. This ground-foraging warbler is known for its loud, ringing song and walking behavior on the forest floor. Its inclusion shows that the documented community included both canopy singers and birds using leaf litter and understory habitat.

6. Slate-colored junco

The source table calls this bird the “slate-colored junco,” with an estimate of 12 singing males per 100 acres. That is a historical common name; modern field guides may use a different naming treatment for the same junco forms. Preserve the source wording when discussing the survey, and avoid implying that the old label is a current taxonomic judgment.

7. Hooded warbler

Hooded warbler was estimated at 11 singing males per 100 acres. The species typically favors shaded forest with a leafy lower layer, and the male’s black hood and yellow face are distinctive when visibility allows. The record is evidence of occurrence in the sampled high-elevation forest, not a guarantee of a sighting at any particular overlook.

8. Black-and-white warbler

Black-and-white warbler appeared at 10 estimated singing males per 100 acres. Its striped plumage and habit of creeping along trunks make it one of the easier warblers to identify when it is visible. As with the other entries, the estimate applies to singing males in the survey’s forest sample.

9. Rose-breasted grosbeak

Rose-breasted grosbeak had an estimate of eight singing males per 100 acres. The male’s red breast triangle is conspicuous, while females and young birds are streaked brown. The survey documents the species in high-elevation forest; it does not provide a current abundance estimate or a mountain-wide total.

10. Wood thrush

Wood thrush was listed at seven estimated singing males per 100 acres. Its flute-like song can travel farther than the bird can be seen in dense woodland. The value is the lowest among these ten entries, but “lowest” does not mean rare: it is still a substantial estimate for the particular sampled habitat and survey method.

How reliable are the bird numbers?

Use the table as historical ecological evidence, not as a checklist of what you will necessarily see now. The survey sampled one forest type at a narrow elevation band. It counted singing males, which are easier to detect during breeding activity than silent birds, females or juveniles. The accessible page does not identify the study date or author, so the figures cannot be assigned to a particular year without consulting the original publication metadata.

Three distinctions prevent overclaiming:

  • Survey evidence versus current occurrence: A historical record demonstrates that the species used that habitat when the survey was conducted; it does not prove present-day density.
  • Singing males versus total population: The unit is an estimated number of singing males per 100 acres, not all individuals or a population estimate for Black Mountain.
  • High-elevation forest versus exact summit: The sample was at 3,900–4,000 feet in forest. That is high on the mountain, but it is not the same as documenting birds on the highest exposed point.

Other animals documented on upper Black Mountain

Black Mountain salamander (Desmognathus welteri)

Kentucky’s amphibian account says Black Mountain salamanders are regularly encountered on Black Mountain. They are most common in rocky headwater creeks and cool, moist forested ravines, including clear, high-gradient mountain streams. The cited survey records extend through 2004; that information supports habitat association and repeated encounters, not a current abundance estimate. Searching for them should never involve turning rocks, entering streams, or disturbing cover in a protected ravine.

Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis)

The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves lists the federally endangered Indiana bat among species documented on upper portions of Black Mountain. The state page does not provide a current local count. Because roosting and hibernating bats are sensitive to disturbance, a record of the species is a conservation fact—not an invitation to enter caves, mines or restricted habitat.

Wehrle’s salamander

Wehrle’s salamander is named by the state as an animal associated with Black Mountain’s high-elevation natural system. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet describes the mountain as supporting an important natural system of plants and animals unique in Kentucky, “such as Wehrle’s salamander.” That statement identifies its conservation significance without supplying a population total.

American black bear

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife identifies the Black Mountain area as part of the eastern Kentucky bear range. This is regional range context, not a verified summit observation. A bear could use forested mountain habitat, but the available evidence does not justify saying that a bear was documented on the highest point itself.

Why Black Mountain supports unusual wildlife

At 4,139 feet, Black Mountain supports northern hardwood forest that is unusually well developed for Kentucky. The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves reports that more than 40 listed species have been documented on upper portions of the mountain. At least 12 listed species found there are known nowhere else in Kentucky, and another 15 have their highest-quality known populations in the state on the mountain. About 40 moth species have been collected on Black Mountain and nowhere else in Kentucky. These figures are presented on the state page without a displayed publication year.

The elevation, cool conditions, moist ravines and intact forest structure create habitat unlike much of the surrounding state. Wildlife is distributed unevenly: a warbler may use a mature canopy, a salamander a cold headwater, and a bat a roosting or foraging feature that visitors cannot see. “Atop” therefore means the upper mountain’s connected habitats, not a bare summit occupied by every species listed.

Can you visit to look for these animals?

Do not assume that the conservation easement is a public trail system. The current Black Mountain conservation page labels access “Research Only.” Verify any separate public route, permission requirement and seasonal closure with the relevant land manager before planning a trip. Never cross a gate or enter a research area because a map, photograph or wildlife list makes the location seem accessible.

If lawful access is confirmed, quiet observation is the least disruptive approach:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remain on the authorized route and keep out of headwater channels, ravines, roosts and dense understory.
  2. Use binoculars rather than approaching birds or wildlife. A compact pair is practical for scanning a closed forest canopy, but no particular model is required.
  3. Do not play recorded bird songs, bait animals, handle salamanders or shine lights at bats.
  4. Record the elevation, habitat and date of an observation, and report sensitive species only through the land manager or appropriate wildlife agency.

What to do if you encounter a bear

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife advises people not to approach bears. If a bear is at a distance, alter your route and give it space; never run. Ordinary shy behavior is different from warning signs such as jaw popping or huffing. Back away without crowding the animal, keep people and pets together, and follow current agency guidance.

“Never feed bears” is the agency’s rule. Direct or indirect feeding is illegal in Kentucky and can bring a fine of up to $1,000, up to a year in jail and loss of hunting and fishing privileges for as long as three years. Secure food and refuse so wildlife cannot learn to associate people with a meal.

Bottom line: what is really known?

Black Mountain is Kentucky’s 4,139-foot high point and an unusually important high-elevation ecosystem. Ten bird species are documented in a historical survey of forest near the top, with Canada warbler, black-throated blue warbler and veery having the highest listed singing-male estimates. Black Mountain salamanders are regularly encountered in cool rocky streams and ravines, Indiana bats are among the listed species documented on upper portions, and Wehrle’s salamander is part of the mountain’s distinctive natural system. Bears belong to the wider eastern Kentucky landscape, but a regional range record is not proof of a summit sighting. Treat every record as habitat information, respect the “Research Only” access designation, and verify permission before attempting to visit.
