Wildlife Sanctuary vs. Zoo: What’s the Difference for Rescued Animals?

Sanctuaries often care for animals for life, rehabilitation centers aim to release recoverable wildlife, and zoos regularly exhibit animals as part of broader institutional missions. Learn what labels and policies can—and can’t—tell you.

A wildlife sanctuary generally offers a safe haven and, for animals that cannot return to the wild, long-term or lifetime care. A rehabilitation center usually provides temporary care with the goal of releasing wildlife to its native habitat. A zoo, in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) definition of an accredited zoological park, is a permanent institution that cares for and regularly exhibits wildlife, with conservation, preservation, education, and science among its primary aims. These roles can overlap, and a facility’s name alone does not show how it treats animals.

What happens to rescued animals at a sanctuary?

Sanctuaries provide care for animals who have been abused, injured, abandoned, or are otherwise unable to live in the wild or in traditional domestic settings. The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) describes sanctuary care as lifetime care for these animals. Sources may include private ownership, research facilities, government agencies, entertainment, or zoos.

That makes a sanctuary a likely destination for an animal that cannot safely be released, but not every animal described as rescued needs permanent sanctuary care. Animals that can recover and return to a suitable wild habitat may instead enter rehabilitation.

How does a sanctuary differ from a rehabilitation center?

The key difference is the intended outcome. A sanctuary generally provides a safe haven, often for life; a wildlife rehabilitation center generally provides temporary care with the aim of release to the animal’s native habitat. The animal’s condition and prospects for release matter more than the label on the facility.

How does a zoo differ from a sanctuary?

AZA defines an accredited zoological park as a permanent, professionally staffed institution that cares for and regularly exhibits wildlife. Its definition includes conservation, preservation, education, and science among the institution’s primary aims. Rescue is not the defining criterion, and it would be inaccurate to assume that every animal in a zoo was rescued.

GFAS does not require sanctuaries to offer public visits. When a sanctuary does offer visits, GFAS principles call for guided, educational tours that protect animal welfare and avoid direct public contact with wildlife. Regular public exhibition is part of AZA’s definition of a zoological park, but public viewing does not by itself establish whether an individual facility meets sanctuary standards.

Can a zoo be a sanctuary?

The terms describe different roles, but organizations and accreditation categories can overlap. AZA’s related-facility category includes sanctuaries and other facilities that are not public zoos. A zoo may also receive or care for rescued animals, but that fact alone does not make the institution a sanctuary under GFAS principles. To understand a particular organization, check its current status with the relevant accrediting body and read its policies rather than relying on its name.

What policies help you judge a facility’s care?

Accreditation and verification can offer useful information, but they are separate programs with different scopes. AZA accreditation is not a substitute for GFAS accreditation or verification, and GFAS accreditation is voluntary; lack of it alone does not prove poor care. GFAS notes that quality varies among organizations using labels such as “sanctuary” or “rescue.”

What do the accreditation figures tell you?

AZA reported 254 accredited zoos, aquariums, and related facilities in 12 countries in March 2026. That combined figure is not a count of sanctuaries or rescued animals. AZA says accreditation occurs every five years. Its statistics page, accessed in October 2026, says AZA-accredited zoo and aquarium professionals care for more than 780,000 animals, but the page does not state the reporting year for that figure; it should not be read as a count of rescued animals.
