Washington State University Extension says there is no published evidence that coffee grounds repel or kill garden pests generally; its statement is not based on a squirrel-specific trial. For plants squirrels are digging up or eating, a properly installed wire cage or mesh barrier is a more defensible first step.
Why coffee grounds are not a dependable squirrel deterrent
Washington State University Extension’s Using Coffee Grounds in Gardens and Landscapes, revised in December 2021, states: “There is no published evidence that coffee grounds will repel or kill any garden pests.” That supports treating coffee grounds as an unproven deterrent—not claiming a direct experiment has shown they do or do not repel squirrels.

Putting grounds around plants may also create problems. WSU Extension warns that fresh grounds can be phytotoxic to some plants, and that reduced seed germination and plant growth have been observed. A thick layer of finely textured grounds can compact and interfere with air and moisture movement in soil.
What to do instead, based on the damage
First identify what squirrels are doing: digging in a bed, reaching fruit, or digging up bulbs. Then protect the particular target with a barrier suited to its access route.

- Garden beds and fruit crops: Oregon State University Extension recommends wire cages to keep squirrels out. Choose and install a cage or mesh barrier that covers or surrounds the crop and inspect it for damage.
- Bulbs: University of Florida IFAS Extension describes hardware cloth as a way to prevent squirrels from reaching bulbs underground while shoots grow through it.
- Repellents: Treat these as a possible supplement, not a guaranteed fix. Oregon State Extension says repellents may provide temporary control and that many products have not been scientifically tested for success or duration. It describes reapplication every two weeks or after heavy rain; follow the specific product label, including its directions for the intended animal and any edible crops. Penn State Extension also reports limited success for certain repellents.
The cited guidance does not establish one universal mesh opening or cage height for every crop and garden. Fit the barrier to the plant and the way squirrels are getting to it.

Use grounds for an appropriate soil or compost purpose, not as pest control. UConn Extension cautions against applying a thick layer. WSU Extension recommends no more than a half-inch of composted grounds as a thin layer, only when a soil test indicates a need, and covered with coarse organic mulch. Fresh grounds and a thick standalone mulch layer are not equivalent to that limited use.
