The fossils do not mean that modern whales walked on land: they capture ancient whale forms, including some whose hind limbs were still being lost.
Where is Whale Valley in Egypt?
Wadi Al-Hitan lies in Faiyum Governorate, in Egypt’s Western Desert, within the wider Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area. “Whale graveyard” is an informal description; the site’s name is Wadi Al-Hitan, Arabic for “Whale Valley.” UNESCO lists the World Heritage property at 20,015 hectares, with a 5,885-hectare buffer zone. What do the fossils show about whales walking on land?
Whales descended from land-based mammals, and their evolutionary history includes a transition to life in the water. Wadi Al-Hitan preserves evidence from a later stage of that transition. UNESCO describes the youngest archaeocetes—the ancient whales found there—as being “in the last stages of losing their hind limbs.” They had streamlined bodies and were becoming increasingly adapted to an aquatic life.
That is the meaning behind the headline claim: whale ancestors were land animals, and fossils help document the transition. It is not evidence that modern whales walked on land, nor does the site show present-day whales leaving the ocean to walk.

Why is Wadi Al-Hitan an important fossil site?
A 2023 review in the International Journal of Earth Sciences describes the rich fossil record of coastal marine life at Wadi Al-Hitan as dating to about 41–37 million years ago. International Journal of Earth Sciences, 2023
UNESCO emphasizes the fossils’ concentration, quality and accessibility, including complete skeletons. The site also preserves evidence that helps researchers reconstruct the ancient environment in which these animals lived. Together, the fossils and environmental context make the valley valuable for understanding both early whales and the world they inhabited. UNESCO calls it an exceptional global reference site for whale evolution.
World Heritage status and protection
UNESCO inscribed Wadi Al-Hitan on the World Heritage List in 2005. The World Heritage Committee’s decision describes the site’s significance in documenting the emergence of whales as ocean-going mammals from land-based ancestors. UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Decision 29 COM 8B.5

According to UNESCO, the property is state-owned and protected under Egypt’s Law 102/1983 on nature protectorates. Its management account identifies vehicle damage as a concern and stresses the need to manage research and visitation sustainably. Protection matters because fossils and their setting are irreplaceable evidence, not simply a collection of specimens.
