Winter Bull-Readiness Checklist: Have Breeding Bulls Ready for Turnout

Prepare breeding bulls in winter by checking condition and soundness, matching nutrition to forage, and scheduling a veterinarian’s breeding soundness evaluation early enough to retest or replace a bull before turnout.

Start preparing breeding bulls during winter, not when turnout is days away. Check body condition and physical soundness, match feed to the forage available, and schedule a veterinarian’s breeding soundness evaluation early enough to act on the results. Purina guidance cites a turnout target of body condition score (BCS) 6 for mature bulls and 6.5 for yearlings; the right date for examinations and any intervention depends on your herd’s breeding and calving calendar.

Why winter is the preparation season

January through March may be a relatively quiet period for bulls, but it is not a period when their management can be ignored. A bull that looks adequate in a winter lot can still arrive at turnout with insufficient condition, a physical problem, or an unsatisfactory breeding soundness evaluation. Cold-weather exposure, changing feed quality and limited exercise can all affect the margin you have when breeding begins.

The practical objective is to discover problems while there is still time to correct them, retest, or arrange a replacement. Treat the turnout date as a deadline and work backward from it. The exact schedule should follow your operation’s calving pattern, regional weather and the availability of your veterinarian.

Set the target from your turnout date

Purina guidance places mature bulls at BCS 6 and yearling bulls at BCS 6.5 by turnout. Chad Zehnder, Ph.D., a cattle consultant and nutritionist with Purina Animal Nutrition, stated those targets in a BEEF sponsored Industry Voice article published November 1, 2021. They are useful planning targets, not a guarantee that every bull in every environment should be managed identically.

Bull category Purina guidance at turnout How to use the figure
Mature bull BCS 6 Use as a condition target when planning winter nutrition and monitoring change.
Yearling bull BCS 6.5 Use the higher target cited for younger bulls, then confirm the plan with a veterinarian or cattle nutritionist.

The same sponsored article reports that bulls may lose 10–15% of body weight over a breeding season. That is a figure from the 2021 sponsored source, not a universal outcome for every herd. It reinforces why bulls should not begin breeding already short of condition.

Build a backward-planned winter calendar

Write down the planned turnout date, the start of breeding, the expected calving season and the dates when your veterinarian can examine the bulls. South Dakota State University Extension notes that sperm production takes about 60 days. That biological lead time means a problem found immediately before turnout may not be fully correctable by the time cows are exposed.

Planning point Action Decision it enables
At least several weeks before turnout Assess condition, feet, legs and overall physical soundness; review feed and forage. Identify bulls needing a nutrition change, closer observation or professional assessment.
Well before breeding Book a breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) with your veterinarian. Leave time for treatment decisions, a repeat examination or a replacement.
Before the breeding group is assembled Confirm which bulls are cleared, which are being held back and which need a contingency plan. Avoid discovering a problem after cows are already exposed.
At turnout Recheck identity, condition and mobility, and record the bulls assigned to each group. Create a baseline for follow-up during the breeding season.

UGA Extension describes seasonal examples that include evaluating bulls, trimming feet, arranging examinations and considering replacements. Those examples are not a universal calendar: adjust them to your own calving schedule, weather and labor availability.

Step 1: Assess body condition and physical structure

Begin with every bull as an individual. Record the bull’s identification, age class, current BCS and any change since the previous check. A group average can hide a thin yearling or an older bull that is losing condition.

  • Condition: Compare each bull with the appropriate turnout target. If a bull is below target, determine whether forage quantity, forage quality, competition or a health issue is responsible before simply adding feed.
  • Frame and mobility: Watch bulls walk and turn. Note lameness, reluctance to move, abnormal gait or difficulty rising.
  • Feet and legs: Inspect feet and leg structure early enough for a veterinarian or qualified professional to advise on trimming or treatment.
  • General physical soundness: Record abnormalities that could interfere with mounting, service or sustained movement.
  • Age and workload: Yearlings have a different condition target from mature bulls, and a bull’s previous breeding workload affects how much recovery time is available.

Do not use a feed response to mask a structural problem. A bull that gains weight but remains unsound is not ready for breeding. Conversely, a bull that is structurally sound but losing condition may need a forage or supplementation adjustment rather than removal from the breeding group.

Step 2: Match nutrition to forage, age and condition

Forage quantity and quality determine whether supplementation is needed. Test or otherwise characterize what the bulls are actually consuming, then compare that supply with the condition target and the demands of winter. The goal is a balanced plan, not automatic use of a particular product.

Purina’s winter guidance discusses minerals, protein tubs and self-fed supplements as possible tools. Those recommendations come from a manufacturer source, and the suitable formulation, delivery method and amount vary by region, forage and herd. Ask a local cattle nutritionist or veterinarian to review the ration when the forage base is uncertain.

Option When it may fit Questions to resolve first
Forage as the primary diet Forage is available in adequate quantity and supports the desired condition. Is quality declining, and can all bulls access enough of it?
Mineral supplement A mineral program is needed to address regional or forage-related mineral requirements. Which formulation matches the forage and local deficiencies, and is intake consistent?
Protein tub Additional protein is appropriate for the forage and the bulls’ condition. Will the delivery method provide reliable access without excessive competition?
Self-fed supplement A self-fed product is practical for the facilities and the herd’s intake pattern. Can intake be monitored, and does the product complement rather than duplicate the base diet?

Monitor the result instead of assuming the label or product category solves the problem. Recheck condition at planned intervals, look for dominant animals preventing others from eating, and document any change in forage, weather or grouping. If a bull is not moving toward the target, reassess the diagnosis before increasing supplementation.

Step 3: Schedule a breeding soundness evaluation

A BSE is a professional examination, not a visual substitute for one. South Dakota State University Extension identifies the bull check as including body condition, breeding soundness evaluation and physical soundness. Arrange the examination with your veterinarian well before turnout so the result can guide your next decision.

What the appointment is meant to answer

  • Is the bull physically capable of finding, mounting and servicing cows?
  • Are there physical findings that could reduce breeding ability or require treatment?
  • Does the bull need to be rechecked after an interval?
  • Should you hold a replacement or change the breeding-group plan?

Sperm production takes about 60 days, according to the 2020 South Dakota State University Extension guidance. That does not mean every BSE should be scheduled exactly 60 days before turnout, nor does it guarantee recovery in that period. It means that the biological timeline matters: discuss examination timing, retesting and any intervention with your veterinarian rather than waiting until the last available week.

Keep written results linked to each bull’s identification. A pass or fail decision without the date, findings and follow-up plan is difficult to use when weather, groups or turnout dates change.

Plan for weather and frostbite risk

Cold-weather effects on breeding soundness are a reason to manage proactively. The American Angus Association’s interview description specifically raises frostbite, examination timing, retesting and contingency plans as winter bull-management topics, but it does not establish a clinical protocol. Use your veterinarian to evaluate any suspected injury and to decide whether a bull should be examined again or removed from service.

During winter checks, document exposure conditions and any new change in mobility, condition or reproductive function. Make sure bulls can reach feed and water without excessive competition and that handling facilities allow a safe examination. These observations do not replace a BSE; they help you recognize when the planned appointment needs to happen sooner.

Use a contingency plan, not a single-bull assumption

Every operation needs a decision for an unsatisfactory result. Before examinations, list the options available if a bull is thin, unsound or not cleared: allow recovery and retest where the veterinarian considers that reasonable, change the breeding group, use a qualified replacement or revise the turnout plan. The correct choice depends on the timing, diagnosis, herd size and available bulls.

Keep a time buffer between the first examination and turnout. A calendar with no room for a second visit turns a manageable finding into a breeding-season emergency. Also identify which bull is assigned to each group; this makes it possible to act quickly if one bull becomes lame or must be removed after turnout.

Common winter-preparation mistakes

  • Waiting for turnout week: This leaves too little time to address a BSE finding when sperm production and recovery require biological time.
  • Feeding to a group average: Dominant bulls may gain while a subordinate or younger bull remains below target.
  • Treating a product as a prescription: Minerals, protein tubs and self-fed supplements are options discussed in manufacturer guidance, not universal requirements.
  • Ignoring physical soundness: Adequate BCS cannot compensate for lameness or a structural problem that prevents service.
  • Using a fixed calendar: Extension examples are seasonal; your calving and breeding schedule should determine the dates.
  • Skipping documentation: Without condition scores, examination dates and group assignments, it is harder to identify a trend or make a timely replacement decision.

Turnout-day checklist

  1. Confirm each bull’s identity, age category and most recent BCS.
  2. Verify that the mature-bull or yearling-bull condition target used in your plan has been met or that a veterinarian has approved the alternative plan.
  3. Confirm the BSE date and result for every bull entering a breeding group.
  4. Review any restrictions, retest dates or follow-up instructions with the veterinarian.
  5. Check that feed, mineral access, water and handling arrangements are ready for the group.
  6. Record which bulls are assigned to which cows or pastures.
  7. Keep the contingency contact list and replacement plan available to the people managing the herd.

After turnout, continue observing condition and mobility rather than treating the BSE as a permanent guarantee. The examination is a readiness decision made at a point in time; weather, injury and the demands of the breeding season can change that status.

What a defensible readiness decision looks like

A bull is ready when the records support three separate conclusions: his condition is appropriate for his age and turnout target; his available forage and supplementation plan are adequate for that condition; and a veterinarian has assessed breeding and physical soundness with enough time for follow-up. If one of those conclusions is missing, the responsible next step is to close that gap before exposure rather than assume the bull will perform normally.

The named figures in this plan come from different kinds of sources: Purina guidance and a Purina-sponsored BEEF article provide the BCS targets and the reported seasonal weight-loss figure, while university extension publications provide the bull-check components, sperm-production timeline and calendar-planning advice. Use them as decision aids, then tailor the final schedule and treatment choices to your veterinarian’s assessment and your own herd calendar.
