Wisconsin does not officially call all nine entries “state animals.” The state’s official list contains nine animal-related symbols spread across separate categories: state animal, state wildlife animal, state domestic animal, state dog, state bird, state insect, state symbol of peace, state fish and state fossil. The count includes the trilobite, an extinct fossil, so it is an editorial count of related symbols rather than a formal state classification titled “nine state animals.”
The badger is Wisconsin’s only officially designated state animal. The white-tailed deer is the state wildlife animal, the dairy cow is the state domestic animal, and the other entries represent specialized symbol categories. Here is what each designation means and how the selections were made.

Why are there “nine Wisconsin state animals”?
The phrase is useful shorthand, but it blurs nine different legal and educational categories. Wisconsin’s current state-symbol materials list the badger, deer, dairy cow, American Water Spaniel, robin, honey bee, mourning dove, muskellunge and trilobite as separate entries. Only one of those entries carries the exact label state animal.
For a living-animal list, the trilobite should be left out because it is extinct and represented by a fossil. If the broad nine-entry count is used, identify it as an animal-related state symbol and explain the counting rule. That distinction prevents two common errors: calling every entry a state animal and describing the trilobite as a living Wisconsin species.

The badger: Wisconsin’s official state animal
Wisconsin named the American badger its state animal in 1957. The designation began with an unusually direct civic effort: four elementary students in Jefferson County learned that the badger lacked official status and encouraged legislation to correct that omission. Their initiative resulted in the state’s formal designation.
The animal is the American badger, Taxidea taxus, rather than a generic reference to any badger species. When writing or teaching about Wisconsin’s symbol, using the full common name makes the identification precise.
The badger’s heraldic role
The badger also appears in Wisconsin’s coat of arms, a role separate from the 1957 state-animal designation. Wisconsin Statutes § 1.07 describes the crest in the words: “Crest.—A badger, passant, proper.” The statutory wording concerns the state coat of arms; it is not a second animal category.

Why the badger label matters
“State animal” is not a loose umbrella term in Wisconsin’s official scheme. It is the badger’s specific category. Calling the deer or dairy cow a second state animal erases the distinction that lawmakers made when they assigned those animals different designations.
The white-tailed deer: state wildlife animal
The white-tailed deer received its own designation in 1957, the same year as the badger. Its title is state wildlife animal, not state animal. The wording reflects the deer’s place as a native wild species and acknowledges its importance to Wisconsin’s outdoor economy and hunting traditions.
How the 1957 compromise worked
Northern counties and legislators had sought the deer as Wisconsin’s state animal. They pointed to the deer’s native population and to hunting’s economic benefits. Instead of replacing the badger proposal, lawmakers reached a compromise: the badger became the state animal while the white-tailed deer became the state wildlife animal.
This history explains why both animals appear prominently in Wisconsin symbol lists without holding the same title. The designations are complementary, not competing claims about which species is “really” the state animal.

How to describe the deer accurately
Use “Wisconsin’s state wildlife animal” when referring to the official category. “Wisconsin state animal” can be used as a broad search phrase only if the text immediately clarifies that the deer’s formal designation is different.
The dairy cow: state domestic animal
Wisconsin designated the dairy cow as its state domestic animal in 1971. The choice recognizes the animal’s contributions to the state and fits Wisconsin’s long-standing “America’s Dairyland” identity.
This is a domestic-animal designation, not a claim that the dairy cow is Wisconsin’s general state animal. The category highlights the relationship between a managed livestock animal and the state’s agricultural history. It also explains why the cow belongs on a complete animal-symbol list even though the badger remains the sole state animal.
The American Water Spaniel: Wisconsin’s state dog
The American Water Spaniel became Wisconsin’s state dog in 1985. Wisconsin’s official description emphasizes that the breed was developed as a practical, versatile hunting dog.

That makes the American Water Spaniel a distinct entry from the badger, deer and dairy cow. It also reflects a different kind of connection to Wisconsin: a working dog developed for usefulness in the field and around water, rather than a wild animal selected for population or habitat.
The robin: state bird
Wisconsin named the robin its state bird in 1949. The selection traces back to schoolchildren who chose the robin during the 1926–27 school year, giving the designation a strong civic and educational origin.
The robin’s category is important when comparing it with the mourning dove. Both are birds on the state-symbol list, but only the robin is the state bird. The mourning dove holds a separate peace-symbol designation.

The honey bee: state insect
The honey bee, Apis mellifera, became Wisconsin’s state insect in 1977. A school class requested the honor, and the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association supported the proposal.
The honey bee is therefore an official insect symbol, not a second state animal. Its inclusion shows how Wisconsin’s symbol system extends beyond mammals and birds to recognize an invertebrate associated with agriculture, pollination and beekeeping.
The mourning dove: state symbol of peace
Wisconsin designated the mourning dove as its state symbol of peace in 1971. This title describes the meaning assigned to the bird, not its place in the state-bird category.
The distinction is easy to miss because the mourning dove is plainly a bird. In an accurate list, identify the robin as state bird and the mourning dove as state symbol of peace. Treating both as state birds would collapse two separate designations into one.
The muskellunge: state fish
The muskellunge became Wisconsin’s state fish in 1955. Wisconsin’s official state-symbol description notes that muskellunge occur in the state’s lakes and in sections of its rivers.

The trilobite: state fossil, not a living animal
Wisconsin identifies the trilobite as its state fossil. Trilobites are extinct, so this entry should never be presented as a living state animal or as a species currently found in Wisconsin.

The trilobite appears in the nine-entry count only because the count combines all animal-related state symbols listed by Wisconsin, including the fossil category. A reader looking for living animals can stop after the muskellunge; a reader asking about every animal-related symbol can include the trilobite with this explicit qualification.

Wisconsin’s designations were adopted over several decades rather than in one single program. The muskellunge came first in 1955. The badger and white-tailed deer followed in 1957, creating the paired animal and wildlife-animal categories. The robin was named in 1949, before either mammal designation, while the dairy cow and mourning dove were both added in 1971. The honey bee followed in 1977, and the American Water Spaniel became the state dog in 1985.
Reading the dates alongside the categories helps explain why the list is not a ranked contest. Each entry answers a different purpose: wildlife, domestic life, a working breed, bird identity, peace symbolism, insects, fish or fossils. The dates document when each status was established, not a changing order of importance.
Compare the categories before comparing the animals
These entries are not competing choices for one office. Compare them first by official category, then by species or common name, designation date and selection context. The badger and deer illustrate a legislative compromise; the cow represents domestic agriculture; the spaniel represents a Wisconsin-developed working breed; and the robin, honey bee, mourning dove and muskellunge occupy their own symbol categories. The trilobite belongs only in the fossil category.
This framework also makes short answers more precise. “Wisconsin’s animal” means the badger in the formal singular. “Wisconsin’s animal symbols” can mean the broader nine-entry list, provided the fossil and category distinctions are stated.
A reliable way to answer Wisconsin state-animal questions
- Lead with the formal distinction: Wisconsin’s only state animal is the badger.
- Identify the deer correctly: call the white-tailed deer the state wildlife animal and mention the 1957 compromise if historical context is needed.
- Separate domestic and breed categories: the dairy cow is the state domestic animal, while the American Water Spaniel is the state dog.
- Keep the bird categories separate: the robin is state bird; the mourning dove is state symbol of peace.
- Include the honey bee and muskellunge by their own titles: state insect and state fish.
- Explain the counting rule: add the trilobite only when “nine” means all animal-related symbols, and label it as the state fossil.
This wording answers both versions of the question: “What is Wisconsin’s state animal?” has one answer—the badger—while “What are the nine animal-related state symbols?” produces the broader list above.

Does Wisconsin have more than one state animal?
No. The badger is the only entry with the exact official title “state animal.” The white-tailed deer and dairy cow have separate titles: state wildlife animal and state domestic animal.
Why is the badger Wisconsin’s state animal?
Four Jefferson County elementary students learned that the badger lacked official status and prompted a bill. Wisconsin designated the American badger, Taxidea taxus, in 1957.
Is the white-tailed deer also a Wisconsin state animal?
Not formally. It is Wisconsin’s state wildlife animal. Northern counties had sought the deer as the state animal, but the 1957 legislative compromise gave the badger the state-animal title and the deer the wildlife designation.

The American Water Spaniel, designated in 1985. The official description identifies it as a practical, versatile hunting dog.
Why are there nine Wisconsin state animals?
The number is an editorial count of nine animal-related state-symbol entries, not a state-published category called “nine state animals.” It includes the extinct trilobite as the state fossil, so the count must be explained rather than presented as nine living state animals.
The Bottom Line
Wisconsin’s only official state animal is the American badger, named in 1957. The deer, dairy cow, spaniel, robin, honey bee, mourning dove, muskellunge and trilobite belong to separate wildlife, domestic, dog, bird, insect, peace, fish and fossil categories. The “nine” count is therefore a broad symbol list, and the trilobite is extinct.
