A June 2020 report described a video showing a woman strike an Assateague wild pony with a shovel before the horse knocked her to the ground. The report does not establish when the video was recorded, what happened to the woman afterward, or whether authorities took enforcement action. The episode is also a reminder to give wild horses space: the National Park Service says visitors must stay at least 40 feet away and should back off if horses approach.
What the video report says
In a report dated June 29, 2020, the Miami Herald’s Maddie Capron said a video showed a woman smacking a wild pony with a shovel on an Assateague beach. The report said the horse knocked her down; she got up and began approaching it again. An on-video bystander warned, “They’re going to kick you.”

The video had been posted to the People of the Ocean City Boardwalk Facebook page on the preceding Saturday. However, the National Park Service told the newspaper that it did not know whether the recording itself was recent. The incident therefore should not be assigned a definite date based on the post date.

What is known about the response—and what is not
The National Park Service said Assateague Island National Seashore law-enforcement rangers had been notified and that the video was forwarded to them. The report described a possible Wildlife Protection code violation, but it did not establish that the woman was identified, cited, charged, or penalized. The available account does not establish the final outcome.

Why “instant karma” is not a verified explanation
“Instant karma” is a dramatic description, not a finding about what the horse intended or what injuries the woman suffered. The contemporaneous report described the sequence on video, but did not establish the horse’s motive or provide a medical account. The National Park Service’s general warning is that horses may bite, kick, or charge, particularly when crowded or competing for food; that guidance explains the risk, not the individual animal’s behavior in this clip.

Do not approach, touch, or feed them
Follow the park’s direction not to approach, touch, or feed the horses. The NPS explains that feeding or petting can make horses less wary of people and more likely to approach aggressively over time. This is a general safety rationale, not evidence about the motive of the horse in the reported video.
If a horse comes closer, back away
If horses approach, back off and return to your vehicle, as the National Park Service advises. Do not try to pet, feed, strike, or otherwise interact with them. Their wild behavior can be unpredictable, and a kick or charge can cause serious injury.
