Wysong may suit cats whose owners want a choice of dry, canned, or freeze-dried foods, but there is no single answer for the whole brand: formulas differ, and the package’s adequacy statement matters. For example, Wysong’s Epigen 90 is labeled for maintenance, not all life stages. A 2009 recall of some Wysong dry food is reported by a current review, but the sources available do not establish that cat food was included.
What does Wysong sell?
Wysong describes itself as a maker of food and supplements for dogs, cats, and ferrets. Its dry-cat range includes Original, Optimal, and Epigen lines, along with products such as Uretic, Vitality, Geriatrx, Nurture, Fundamentals, Anergen, and Vegan. It also sells canned, freeze-dried, and raw products. These are distinct formats and formulas, not interchangeable versions of one recipe. Wysong’s dry-cat collection and company site describe the range.

The manufacturer describes Optimize as a meat-based topper or nutritional boost and Nutri-Clip as a way to protect opened dry diets. Those are the company’s descriptions, not evidence that either product is necessary for every cat.
Catster reports that Wysong is based in Midland, Michigan; its dry foods are manufactured in Wisconsin; supplements are made in Midland; and canned foods are made by Evanger’s in the United States. Catster also reports international ingredient sourcing. The manufacturer pages reviewed do not independently confirm each of these location details, so treat them as the reviewer’s reported information rather than a complete sourcing guarantee. - Very nutrient dense. Introduce slowly according to the feeding guidelines. Can be used as a protein booster and meal supplement
Which Wysong formula is the right fit?
Start with the exact recipe and its package, not a general claim that Wysong is “high protein,” “natural,” or “starch-free.” A product’s ingredients and guaranteed analysis apply to that formula; they do not establish nutritional characteristics for the entire range. Wysong markets Epigen and Epigen 90 as starch-free, but that is a product-design claim, not proof of better health outcomes.
Epigen 90
Wysong identifies Epigen 90 as food for dogs and cats. Its ingredient list begins with chicken meal, organic chicken, and meat protein isolate. The manufacturer’s undated product page, accessed in 2026, lists this guaranteed analysis: 63% minimum crude protein, 16% minimum crude fat, 3% maximum crude fiber, and 10% maximum moisture. These are label guarantees, not independent laboratory results. The page also lists taurine at 0.2% minimum and notes that taurine is not recognized as an essential nutrient by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. Wysong Epigen 90 product page

- Very Palatable And Formulated For Urinary Health. Suitable For All Cat Breeds And Life Stages
- Wysong Has Been A Leader In Pet Nutrition Since 1979
Most importantly, Wysong says Epigen 90 “is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for Maintenance.” That is a maintenance adequacy statement; it is not an all-life-stages statement.

The separate Epigen formula lists organic chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, potato protein, and meat protein isolate among its ingredients. Its guaranteed analysis is 60% minimum crude protein, 15% minimum crude fat, 4% maximum crude fiber, and 10% maximum moisture. Wysong’s page also gives a maintenance adequacy statement for this formula. Wysong Epigen product page

These two formulas illustrate why the exact label matters: Epigen includes potato protein, and its guaranteed-analysis values differ from Epigen 90’s. Ingredient lists can help you identify animal and plant-derived protein sources, but they do not by themselves establish how a food will affect an individual cat.
How to assess nutritional adequacy and compare formulas
AAFCO advises pet owners to look for the nutritional adequacy statement on the package. Check the specific product’s current label for its intended life stage and whether the statement describes a complete diet for that stage. Do not infer all-life-stages adequacy from a maintenance statement or from a brand’s general marketing. AAFCO consumer guidance and AAFCO labeling guidance.

Use these points when comparing Wysong formulas or another food:
- Life stage and adequacy: Confirm the wording on the exact package and match it to your cat’s age and needs.
- Ingredients: Review the listed animal-protein sources and any plant-derived proteins you want to account for.
- Analysis and feeding context: Compare the guaranteed analysis and, where available, calories and other nutrient details relevant to your cat. A guaranteed analysis is not a full nutrient profile.
- Format: Consider whether dry, canned, or freeze-dried food fits your cat’s feeding routine and hydration needs.
- Health needs: Ask your veterinarian before choosing a diet for a diagnosed condition or other specific nutritional need.
- Acceptance and tolerance: A cat’s willingness to eat a food and response to a gradual transition are practical considerations.
- Current availability and cost: Check the exact package and current price with the seller; stock and prices change.
An adequacy statement communicates that a food is formulated to meet specified nutrient profiles; it is not a guarantee that every lot has been independently tested for every nutrient. In a 2026 advisory concerning another manufacturer’s Quest cat food, FDA reported that tested lots did not contain the expected thiamine levels despite an adequacy statement. That case is not about Wysong; it illustrates the distinction between a label statement and lot-specific analytical results. FDA advisory, March 13, 2026

Has Wysong cat food been recalled in the past?
Catster’s review, updated September 15, 2026, reports a 2009 recall of some Wysong dry food associated with high moisture and mold growth. The review does not identify the recalled food as cat food. A separate Cat Food Advisor result says Wysong had not had a cat-food recall and describes the 2009 event as involving dog foods. Based on these accounts, a Wysong dry-food recall is reported, but the sources reviewed do not establish that cat food was among the affected products. It would be too broad to state that Wysong cat food was recalled in 2009 without a product-specific primary record. Catster’s review and Cat Food Advisor’s recall-history result
FDA maintains a live recalls and withdrawals list. Wysong was not among the entries displayed when that page was checked for this article, but a live-page snapshot cannot show that a product has never been recalled. FDA explains that a terminated recall means it determined reasonable removal or correction efforts had been made and proper disposition had occurred; termination does not erase the recall history.
What are the potential benefits and cautions?
Potential advantages
- The product range covers dry, canned, and freeze-dried or raw formats.
- Some named recipes emphasize animal ingredients; their ingredients and analysis can be checked formula by formula.
- The manufacturer gives gradual-transition directions for new food.
These points describe the available formats, labels, and instructions; they do not demonstrate that Wysong foods are healthier than alternatives.
Potential cautions
- Nutrition and ingredients vary by recipe, so a brand-wide description can conceal meaningful differences.
- Some formulas include plant-derived proteins, which may matter to owners comparing ingredient composition.
- Catster and Cats.com report customer or reviewer accounts of vomiting, diarrhea, or other digestive distress. These anecdotes do not establish how often problems occur or that the food caused them. Catster review; Cats.com review
How should you introduce a Wysong food?
Wysong recommends beginning with about 10% of the new food mixed into the current diet and increasing it gradually to help avoid digestive disturbances. Follow the product’s current directions and adjust the pace to your cat’s response. If symptoms persist, or your cat has a diagnosed condition, contact your veterinarian rather than assuming the food is the cause or continuing a transition without advice.
