1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your dog may have eaten xylitol, call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital now—even if your dog seems fine. Xylitol can trigger a rapid insulin release in dogs, causing dangerously low blood sugar, and severe cases can involve liver injury. Keep the product packaging for the veterinary team.
What should I do if my dog ate xylitol?
- Call now. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison-control center and say that your dog may have ingested xylitol. Do not wait for symptoms.
- Keep the package. Bring it or have it available so the veterinary team can identify the product and assess the possible exposure.
- Follow professional instructions. A veterinarian should decide whether any decontamination or treatment is appropriate. Do not induce vomiting or try a home remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you.
For help deciding whom to contact in a pet emergency, the FDA explains who to call.
Why is xylitol dangerous to dogs?
In dogs, xylitol can provoke an exaggerated insulin release. The resulting drop in blood glucose—hypoglycemia—can become dangerous. Severe exposures can also be associated with liver injury, but outcomes are not identical for every dog or exposure. Cornell’s veterinary guidance and the Merck Veterinary Manual describe these risks.
What are the signs of xylitol poisoning in dogs?
Possible signs include vomiting, low activity or lethargy, weakness, disorientation, stumbling or poor coordination, tremors, collapse, seizures, and coma. The timing reported by veterinary and FDA sources varies: signs may begin quickly, while serious effects can sometimes be delayed. The practical rule is not to use symptoms—or their absence—to judge whether your dog is safe. Call for veterinary advice as soon as exposure is suspected.

What products contain xylitol?
Xylitol is a sweetener in products made for people. It may appear on an ingredient list as xylitol, birch sugar, or wood sugar. Possible sources include:
- Sugar-free gum, candy, and mints
- Some peanut and other nut butters, as well as baked goods
- Cough syrups, medicines, and supplements
- Mouthwash and toothpaste
Ingredients vary between products, including within the same category. Do not assume that every nut butter contains xylitol—or that a particular product is safe based on its type or brand. Check the current package’s ingredient list. The FDA’s consumer guidance on xylitol lists common sources and alternate names.

What may happen at the veterinary clinic?
The veterinary team may consider the exposure history, your dog’s signs, and blood tests such as blood glucose and liver-enzyme measurements. Cornell notes that there is no specific test that detects xylitol after ingestion. Depending on the dog’s condition, care may include IV dextrose, fluids and electrolytes, anti-nausea medicine, or liver and gastrointestinal support.
Cornell describes hospitalization for at least 12–24 hours in its treatment guidance and gives rechecking liver enzymes three days after exposure as an example. These are source-described practices, not a guaranteed schedule for every patient; the treating veterinarian determines monitoring and care.

How can I prevent accidental exposure?
- Read labels on sugar-free or low-sugar products, medicines, supplements, and oral-care items; look for xylitol, birch sugar, and wood sugar.
- Store products where your dog cannot reach them, including bags, counters, purses, and bedside tables.
- Do not share human foods or products that contain xylitol with your dog.
- Use toothpaste made for dogs rather than human toothpaste.
Cornell’s xylitol guidance also recommends dog-safe toothpaste as part of prevention.

The available veterinary guidance is strongest for dogs. The FDA says xylitol does not seem to be as dangerous for cats and other pets, but that is not a blanket safety guarantee for every species or product. If a cat or another animal may have eaten xylitol, contact a veterinarian or poison-control service for advice specific to that animal.
