Choose a complete-and-balanced commercial cat food made for your cat’s life stage, then set portions and meal frequency to suit that individual cat with veterinary guidance. Wet, dry, or a combination can work; the best choice is one your cat eats reliably and that supports a healthy body condition.
What should you feed an Oriental cat?
Start with a quality commercial food whose label says it is complete and balanced for the appropriate life stage. PetMD says Oriental Shorthairs do not need a special diet beyond quality commercial food meeting AAFCO nutritional recommendations. A breed label, a grain-free claim, or a particular protein name does not by itself show that a food is better for your cat.
Oriental cats can have different needs because of age, activity, body condition, and health. If your cat has a medical condition or your veterinarian has recommended a therapeutic diet, follow that advice rather than choosing by breed alone.
How to compare cat foods
- Check nutritional adequacy and life stage. Look for a complete-and-balanced statement and confirm that it applies to your cat’s stage of life. Cornell Feline Health Center explains that the label identifies the life stage for which a food is nutritionally adequate.
- Choose a format your cat accepts. Wet, dry, or mixed feeding can be appropriate once nutritional adequacy is established. Canned food has more water, according to The International Cat Association (TICA); Cornell notes that acceptance can help determine which format works for an individual cat.
- Consider calories and portions. Compare calorie density and use the package’s feeding directions as a starting point, not a fixed prescription. Your cat’s calorie needs depend on factors including age, lifestyle, and health.
- Account for health needs. Ask your veterinarian before changing food to address a health concern or starting a restrictive diet.
- Prioritize reliable eating and body condition. A food is not a good fit if your cat will not consistently eat it or if portions make it difficult to maintain a healthy weight.
Wet food, dry food, or both?
There is no single best format for every Oriental cat. TICA highlights canned food’s higher water content, while Cornell emphasizes choosing a nutritionally adequate food the cat will accept. A mixed approach is also an option, provided the overall diet and portions meet your cat’s needs.

How much and how often should an Oriental cat eat?
No universal calorie target is established for the breed. Age, lifestyle, health, and body condition all affect an individual cat’s needs. Use the food label’s directions as an initial guide, then ask your veterinarian to help set a portion that fits your cat and adjust it as needed.

For meal frequency, TICA advises feeding adult Oriental Shorthairs at least twice daily and kittens three or four times per day. PetMD suggests several small meals rather than free-feeding as one way to help maintain a slender figure. These are general recommendations, not a calorie prescription; choose a routine that suits your cat and your veterinarian’s guidance.
Keep treats within the daily diet
PetMD suggests treats make up about 10% of an Oriental Shorthair’s daily calories. Cornell gives a rule of thumb of 10–15% of daily calories for treats. These are separate recommendations from their respective sources, not one agreed breed-specific limit. Include treats in the daily total and ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your cat.

Are raw or homemade diets better?
They should not be treated as simple upgrades to commercial food. Cornell says raw diets can contain bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and that clear health benefits have not been established; the center does not recommend feeding them. It also cautions that homemade diets may have inappropriate nutrient amounts or proportions unless professionally formulated. If a medical need calls for a homemade diet, work with your veterinarian on its formulation.
Food puzzles and enrichment
Food puzzles and foraging feeders are optional ways to offer meals or snacks, not nutritional requirements. PetMD suggests them as enrichment for Oriental Shorthairs. If you use one, account for the food or treats in your cat’s daily intake.
