Yellowstone officials, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO), and independent fact-checkers found no evidence of a mass wildlife exodus or an animal-based warning of an imminent eruption.
Several clips shared in the viral posts were filmed somewhere else entirely. The one confirmed Yellowstone video showed bison moving within the park, which is normal behavior—not a migration out of Yellowstone.
What the viral videos showed
The posts typically combined footage of mountain lions, bears, elk, and bison with captions claiming the animals were escaping Yellowstone or heading toward Salt Lake City. That presentation made unrelated wildlife footage look like a single event.
| Animal footage | What verification found |
|---|---|
| Mountain lions | Filmed at Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia, not Yellowstone. |
| Grizzly bears | Recorded at Bear Country U.S.A., a wildlife attraction in South Dakota. |
| Elk | Filmed in Estes Park, Colorado, in December 2024. |
| Bison | Recorded in Yellowstone, but the herd was moving within the park rather than leaving it. |
Yellowstone spokeswoman Linda Veress told AFP that some of the circulating material appeared to be satirical or AI-generated. The mountain-lion claim is also implausible on its face: Yellowstone’s estimated mountain-lion population is approximately 29 to 45 animals, not hundreds.

Why bison and elk may appear to be “fleeing”
Large movements of wildlife do not automatically signal danger. Yellowstone bison and elk regularly shift between areas as they search for food, respond to weather, follow seasonal ranges, or gather in herds. A video showing animals traveling in one direction captures a moment, not necessarily a permanent departure.
Wild animals can respond to immediate conditions such as predators, people, traffic, storms, fire, changes in food availability, or unusual noise. That is very different from having a reliable ability to forecast a volcanic eruption days or weeks in advance. There is no established scientific evidence that wildlife behavior can predict an impending Yellowstone eruption.

In its August 1 monthly update, YVO reported 68 located earthquakes in the Yellowstone region during July. The largest measured magnitude 3.3 and occurred on July 16, about five miles south-southeast of Canyon Village. A smaller swarm of 13 earthquakes occurred north-northeast of Old Faithful on July 17, with magnitudes from 0.6 to 1.5.
YVO described the region’s earthquake activity as being at background levels. Uplift on the north caldera rim that began in July 2025 had stopped by mid-January 2026 and had not resumed by the August update. Minor uplift of about one centimeter or less was considered potentially related to seasonal groundwater changes.
The Biscuit Basin explosion was real—but it was not a supereruption
Yellowstone did experience a real event recently. At about 5:09 a.m. MDT on June 13, 2026, a small hydrothermal explosion occurred at Biscuit Basin, 30 to 60 meters north of Black Diamond Pool. It threw rocks a few meters into the air and sent sediment-rich hot water into the Firehole River.

A hydrothermal explosion happens when shallow underground water rapidly turns to steam. It is a recognized Yellowstone hazard, but it is not the same as a magma-driven volcanic eruption. The event did not establish that a major eruption was beginning. YVO continued to report normal overall activity, and its scientists have described Yellowstone’s magma chamber as mostly solid rather than a reservoir with a large eruption currently “brewing.”
Black Diamond Pool also had several small eruptions during July 2026. Those events were monitored, but they did not change Yellowstone’s NORMAL/GREEN status.

Is Yellowstone “overdue” for an eruption?
No. Yellowstone eruptions do not follow a fixed schedule, so the time since a past eruption cannot be used as a countdown clock. The USGS says it has detected no signs that an eruption is imminent.

Yellowstone is classified as having high volcanic threat potential because a future eruption could have serious consequences. That long-term hazard rating is not the same thing as an immediate warning. The operational alert level and current monitoring data are the more relevant indicators of present conditions.
How to check a dramatic wildlife or volcano claim
- Look for the original upload. A repost may remove the date, location, or context.
- Check landmarks and terrain. A recognizable road, building, mountain profile, or facility can reveal that footage was recorded outside Yellowstone.
- Compare the claim with official updates. Check the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory and Yellowstone National Park before sharing an eruption warning.
- Separate observation from interpretation. “A herd is moving” is an observation; “the herd knows a volcano will erupt” is an unsupported conclusion.
- Be cautious with compilations. Several clips edited together may come from different countries, years, and settings.
For anyone visiting Yellowstone with pets, the practical concern is not a rumored eruption signal from wildlife. Pets are generally restricted in many park areas and must be kept under control; visitors should follow current National Park Service rules, stay on designated routes, and observe wildlife from a safe distance. Bison, bears, and other large animals can be dangerous regardless of volcanic conditions.

Are animals really fleeing Yellowstone in large numbers?
No. Officials and fact-checkers found no evidence of a mass exodus. Several viral clips came from Chile, South Dakota, and Colorado, while the Yellowstone bison footage showed normal movement within the park.

Can animals sense an impending Yellowstone eruption?
Animals may react to immediate changes in their surroundings, but there is no established scientific evidence that their behavior can reliably predict a volcanic eruption or major earthquake.
Did the 2026 Biscuit Basin explosion mean Yellowstone was about to erupt?
No. It was a small hydrothermal explosion caused by rapidly expanding shallow water and steam. It was not a magma-driven eruption, and YVO maintained a NORMAL alert level and GREEN aviation code.
What is Yellowstone’s current volcano alert level?
As of August 9, 2026, Yellowstone’s Volcano Alert Level was NORMAL and its Aviation Color Code was GREEN. YVO reported earthquake activity at background levels in its August 1 update.
The Bottom Line
The viral “animals are fleeing Yellowstone” story is false. The footage was largely mislabeled or taken out of context, and the confirmed Yellowstone wildlife movement was ordinary behavior. A recent hydrothermal explosion at Biscuit Basin was a real but distinct hazard—not evidence of an imminent supereruption. For reliable updates, use Yellowstone National Park and the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory rather than social-media captions.
