Yes. Feral cats can harm ecosystems, chiefly by killing native wildlife; they can also spread disease, while competition with native predators is a possible but less consistently established impact. The scale depends on the place and species involved. Keep one distinction in mind: “feral” means a self-sustaining wild population, but some widely cited estimates count all free-ranging cats, including pets.
What makes a cat feral, and why does the distinction matter?
Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water describes feral cats as domestic cats that live and reproduce in the wild, surviving by hunting or scavenging. “Free-ranging cats” is a broader category that can include owned cats as well as unowned ones. The two terms are not interchangeable, and estimates for free-ranging cats should not be presented as feral-cat counts.

How do feral cats affect the environment?
Predation puts pressure on vulnerable wildlife
Predation is the clearest documented impact. Australia’s federal guidance estimates feral cats kill more than 1.5 billion native mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs, plus 1.1 billion invertebrates each year. It identifies cat predation as a recognized threat to more than 200 nationally threatened species and 37 listed migratory species; feral cats have contributed to the extinction of more than 20 Australian mammal species. These are Australia-specific estimates and findings, not global totals. Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water: Feral cats; Impact and management.

The Australian plan highlights small- to medium-sized terrestrial mammals (up to about 4 kg), ground-dwelling or ground-nesting birds, and colonial reptiles as more likely to be preyed upon. Species in open, arid environments may also face greater risk. However, recording that cats eat a species does not by itself prove that predation is driving its population decline: species differ in their ability to recover or compensate.

Annual kill estimates need their geographic and methodological limits
A 2013 peer-reviewed model estimated that free-ranging domestic cats killed 1.3–4.0 billion birds annually in the contiguous United States, with a median estimate of 2.4 billion, and 6.3–22.3 billion mammals, with a median of 12.3 billion. The model estimated that unowned cats accounted for about 69% of bird deaths and 89% of mammal deaths. Because its scope includes free-ranging cats rather than only feral cats, these figures are not a feral-only count or a direct census. They also should not be combined with Australia’s separate estimates. Loss, Will and Marra, 2013, Nature Communications.
Population estimates also vary with conditions. Australia’s 2024 plan estimates 1.4 million feral cats in arid and semi-arid zones during low-rainfall conditions (95% interval: 1.0–2.2 million), rising to 5.6 million after high rainfall and increases in prey (95% interval: 2.5–10.9 million). It separately estimates more than 0.7 million feral cats in heavily modified habitats and 5.3 million pet cats in 2022. Those figures refer to different settings and categories, so they should not be added together as though they were one population estimate. Australia’s 2024 feral-cat plan.

Disease can affect animals cats do not hunt
Cat feces can carry Toxoplasma gondii. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation describes how the parasite can reach waterways through runoff and cause deaths in Hector’s dolphins and critically endangered Māui dolphins. This is an environmental pathway beyond direct hunting. Australia’s federal guidance also notes that cats can carry infectious diseases transmissible to native wildlife, livestock and people; that does not mean every cat carries a pathogen or that the risk is the same everywhere. New Zealand Department of Conservation: Feral cats; Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Competition is plausible, but its effects are not equally established
Cats may compete with native predators for food, and introduced predators can affect ecological communities directly or indirectly. But the strength of evidence depends on the location. The Northern Territory Government says evidence for competition between feral cats and native species is lacking there; competition with quolls is assumed, not established in that source. Treat competition as a potential or locally proposed pathway, not a settled explanation for wildlife declines everywhere. Northern Territory Government: Feral cat; Australian feral-cat plan.

What do local examples show?
In Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand, the Department of Conservation reports that cat-attributed deaths accounted for 20% of monitored kea deaths during 2019–2021. The agency also describes cat predation on native bats, skinks and threatened braided-river birds, as well as the history of cat-associated loss or extinction of bird species on Auckland Island. These examples show how serious impacts can be in particular settings; they are not a general mortality rate for all cat populations. The agency says New Zealand has no accurate estimate of its feral-cat population. New Zealand Department of Conservation: Feral cats.
Tasmania’s environment department identifies predation, competition and disease as impact pathways and discusses local examples such as bandicoot declines. Do feral cats provide an ecological benefit by catching pests?
Cats may kill introduced animals such as rabbits and rodents, but that fact alone does not establish a net environmental benefit. The official sources cited here do not quantify a general benefit that offsets documented predation on native wildlife. Whether a particular cat population reduces a pest in a way that helps an ecosystem is a local question; it should not be assumed from the presence of prey animals.

For owners of pet cats
Keeping a pet cat indoors reduces its opportunities to hunt wildlife. Smithsonian’s National Zoo also suggests considering a catio or leash as ways for owned cats to spend time outdoors while limiting exposure to wildlife. These steps address pet cats that might roam; they do not control an established feral population. Smithsonian National Zoo: How to keep your cat safe and protect wildlife.

For conservation managers
Australia’s 2024 plan describes predator-proof fenced areas, often called safe havens, and cat eradication on offshore islands as effective approaches in restricted areas. Whether either approach is suitable depends on local geography, the species at risk, feasibility and management context; neither is a universal solution. Decisions also involve cat welfare, local evidence and applicable law. Australian feral-cat plan: impact and management.
A USGS-hosted 2022 study tested Birdsbesafe collars on 94 domestic cats in New York and Florida during bird breeding seasons. Its authors concluded the collar could be one tool in broader efforts to reduce songbird predation. The study concerns a particular intervention on domestic cats, not proof that collars control impacts from feral populations. USGS summary of Jensen, Willson and Powell, 2022.
When considering any response, identify the cats being targeted—owned pets, colony cats or self-sustaining feral populations—and the outcome the action is meant to change, such as wildlife mortality, cat numbers, animal welfare or human safety. Then assess local evidence, practical feasibility and the law that applies in that jurisdiction.
