Yes, Slugs Have Teeth—Here’s How Their Radula Works

Slugs have microscopic tooth-like denticles arranged on a flexible radula. Here’s how that rasping ribbon works with a jaw, why the often-cited 27,000 figure is only approximate, and how species differ.

Yes, slugs have teeth in the everyday sense, but they are nothing like the hard, individual teeth in a human mouth. A slug’s mouth contains a flexible feeding ribbon called a radula, covered with thousands of microscopic tooth-like projections known as denticles. The radula rasps food into smaller particles, while a separate jaw can cut through larger pieces first.

Because denticle number and shape differ among species, there is no single tooth count that applies to every slug. One John Innes Centre educational estimate puts the total at approximately 27,000 denticles, but that figure should be treated as an approximate, source-specific example rather than a universal rule.

What counts as a “tooth” in a slug?

When people ask whether slugs have teeth, they are usually imagining pointed structures that bite or chew. Slugs do have structures that perform part of that job, but the anatomy is specialized for rasping rather than biting with opposing rows of large teeth.

The accurate terms are radula and denticles:

  • Radula: a flexible, tongue-like band inside the mouth.
  • Denticles: the repeated, microscopic tooth-like projections attached to that band.

The radula moves against food like a tiny file or conveyor of scrapers. As it passes over a leaf, algae-covered surface, carrion or another food source, its denticles loosen and collect particles. In that practical sense, calling them slug teeth is reasonable. Anatomically, however, “radular denticles” is more precise.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County describes the arrangement as thousands of microscopic spikes set on a flexible band. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of a slug radula makes the scale clear: what looks like a smooth mouth to the naked eye becomes a dense field of repeated projections under magnification.

How many teeth does a slug have?

There is no scientifically established tooth count that applies to all slugs. Species differ in the number, size, arrangement and shape of their denticles, and the radula can change as it is used. Therefore, any single number presented without a species and source is misleading.

An often-repeated estimate is approximately 27,000 denticles. That figure comes from a John Innes Centre educational overview and is useful for conveying the order of magnitude: a slug’s radula can contain tens of thousands of tooth-like projections. It is not an exact count for every slug species, nor a guaranteed number for an individual animal.

Question What can be said accurately
Does every slug have exactly 27,000 teeth? No. The figure is an approximate educational estimate, not a universal species-wide count.
Are the structures visible without magnification? No. Denticles are microscopic; close-up imaging such as SEM is used to resolve their form.
Are slug denticles all identical? No. Arrangement and shape vary among molluscs and can differ between species.
Is the radula the whole mouth? No. It is a feeding ribbon that works with other mouthparts, including a jaw in the museum’s description.

Counts are only one part of the story. Researchers also examine how many rows a radula has, how central and side denticles are arranged, how their tips are shaped, and how the ribbon moves during feeding. Those features can help distinguish related molluscs.

What do slug teeth look like?

Viewed from above, a radula resembles a narrow, flexible ribbon lined with repeated rows of tiny projections. The denticles are not arranged as a pair of neat upper and lower arches like human teeth. Instead, they form a working surface that can bend and contact food in sequence.

Different positions on a radula may carry differently shaped denticles. Comparative gastropod work commonly describes central, lateral and marginal positions, with each region contributing differently to scraping and transport. A study of the land snail Cornu aspersum, for example, documents those regions and records wear during feeding. That is useful comparative evidence about gastropod radulae, but it is a snail study and should not be treated as a direct description of every slug.

Slug-specific work also shows that the mouth is more than a passive strip of teeth. In a structural study of the banana slug Ariolimax californicus, the buccal mass—the muscular mouth region—includes the radula and its supporting odontophore. These structures participate in both scraping and grabbing food. The banana slug is one research example, not a template that proves every species uses an identical motion.

How does a slug eat?

1. The jaw cuts larger pieces

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County describes a jaw working with the radula. When a slug encounters a relatively large piece of food, the jaw can help cut or fracture it. A leaf edge is an intuitive example: the jaw makes the initial cut, creating pieces that the radula can process more effectively.

This division of labor matters because a flexible ribbon of denticles is excellent at scraping but is not shaped like a mammal’s incisors. The jaw provides a cutting action; the radula provides the rasping action.

2. The radula rasps the surface

Once food is in contact with the mouth, muscles move the radula against it. The denticles scrape across the surface, loosening small particles. Repeated strokes can shave material from a leaf, a film of algae or another food source.

The movement is not necessarily identical in every mollusc. Comparative research describes radulae as morphologically distinct and examines differences in their motion during feeding. That variation is one reason it is safer to explain the general rasping function while qualifying the details for a particular species.

3. Food particles are gathered and swallowed

As the radula rasps, the loosened material is moved toward the digestive tract. In a banana slug, the radula and odontophore are described as participating in scraping and grabbing within the buccal mass. The exact coordination of muscles and mouthparts depends on the animal, but the basic sequence is consistent: cut when needed, rasp the food, then transport the resulting particles inward.

Do slugs use their teeth to bite people?

Slug denticles are designed for processing food, not attacking large animals. They are microscopic and operate as part of a rasping surface. A slug crawling across skin may feel slimy or ticklish, but its radula is not comparable to the jaws or teeth of a biting mammal.

The word “teeth” can create the wrong mental picture. A slug does not have a mouthful of large, individually visible teeth that close together to deliver a painful bite. Its feeding apparatus is closer to a flexible file combined with a small cutting jaw.

What do slugs eat with a radula?

Diet varies widely among snails and slugs. Many familiar land slugs scrape plant tissue, fungi or algae, but it is inaccurate to say that all slugs eat plants. The museum’s overview notes broad dietary diversity that includes carnivory and detritivory as well as plant feeding.

  • Algae and films: a radula can scrape material coating a surface.
  • Detritus: some species consume decomposing organic matter.
  • Animal food: carnivorous species use specialized feeding behaviors and mouthparts to consume prey or carrion.

Because diets differ, radular shape and motion are not simply “one design for eating leaves.” Tooth form can reflect what and how a species feeds, although interpreting that relationship requires species-specific evidence.

Why are slug teeth so small and numerous?

A rasping ribbon benefits from many contact points. Instead of relying on a few large teeth, the slug distributes the work across rows of denticles. As the radula moves, numerous tips can engage a food surface, loosen particles and help pull material into the mouth.

The arrangement also gives the mouth flexibility. A ribbon can conform to an uneven surface and change its contact pattern as muscles move it. This is fundamentally different from the fixed, opposing teeth of a vertebrate jaw.

Wear is part of the system. Gastropod studies document wear on radular teeth, and the repeated-row design provides a continuing working surface. The exact replacement process and timing are species-specific, so a general claim about how quickly any slug replaces denticles would go beyond the available evidence.

How do scientists study a slug radula?

At normal viewing distance, denticles are too small to inspect individually. The museum’s slug example used scanning electron microscopy, which produces a highly magnified image of the radula’s surface. SEM is valuable because it reveals the three-dimensional profile, spacing and wear of tiny projections.

Researchers can then describe features such as:

  • the number and spacing of tooth rows;
  • the shape of central, lateral and marginal denticles;
  • the direction and angle of tooth tips;
  • surface wear associated with feeding; and
  • how the radula is supported and moved inside the buccal mass.

Microscopy shows what the structures look like, while anatomical and behavioral studies help explain how they function. An image alone does not establish a universal feeding mechanism for every slug species.

Are slug teeth different from snail teeth?

Slugs and snails are both gastropod molluscs, so they share the basic radula concept: a flexible band carrying rows of denticles. That does not mean their radulae are identical. Shape, arrangement and movement can vary across molluscs, and those differences may relate to diet, habitat and feeding technique.

Evidence from a snail can illuminate general gastropod anatomy, but it must be labeled as comparative. The Cornu aspersum study of central, lateral and marginal teeth is evidence about that snail’s radula, not a direct tooth map for every slug. Conversely, the Ariolimax californicus structural study gives a slug-specific example without proving that all slugs have the same buccal anatomy.

Common misconceptions about slug teeth

“A slug has one fixed number of teeth.”

Not supported. Approximately 27,000 is an educational estimate from one source, not a universal count.

“Slug teeth are visible like a cat’s or human’s.”

Not supported. Denticles are microscopic and usually require magnification to resolve.

“Every slug is a herbivore.”

Not supported. Snails and slugs include detritivorous and carnivorous species as well as plant feeders.

“The radula alone does all the cutting.”

The museum description distinguishes the jaw’s cutting role from the radula’s rasping role. The two mouthparts work together.

What to remember

  • Slugs do have teeth in the everyday descriptive sense.
  • The precise structures are denticles mounted on a flexible radula.
  • The jaw can cut larger food pieces; the radula rasps them into smaller particles.
  • Approximately 27,000 denticles is a source-specific estimate, not a count for every slug.
  • Tooth shape and radular motion vary among molluscs, so species-level claims need species-level evidence.
  • SEM imaging reveals why these “teeth” are invisible without magnification.
