A Yorkie-poo is a companion-dog cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and either a Toy Poodle or a Miniature Poodle. That combination can produce a bright, affectionate, low-shedding dog, but it does not produce one standardized type. Yorkie-poos can differ considerably in size, coat, appearance, energy level, and behavior—even within the same litter.

They often suit owners who want a small dog that enjoys training and close human company. They are less suitable for homes where the dog will be left alone for most of the day, where barking cannot be managed, or where young children may handle a very small dog roughly.

Yorkie-poo at a glance

Characteristic Typical information
Parents Yorkshire Terrier crossed with Toy Poodle or Miniature Poodle
Commonly published size About 3–15 pounds and 7–15 inches tall
Coat Straight, wavy, or curly; often low-shedding but not reliably hypoallergenic
Colors Black, white, brown, tan, red, apricot, cream, silver, gray, and combinations of these
Temperament Usually affectionate, playful, intelligent, energetic, and people-oriented
Grooming Daily brushing and professional grooming approximately every 4–6 weeks for many dogs
Exercise Short walks, play, training, and mental enrichment; requirements vary by the individual
Expected lifespan Often into the early or mid-teens, although published estimates vary

These figures are useful planning estimates rather than breed requirements. The American Kennel Club does not recognize the Yorkie-poo as a breed and there is no Yorkie-poo breed standard. A puppy’s eventual size and characteristics depend on the size, genetics, and traits of both parents.

How big does a Yorkie-poo get?

A commonly published range is 3–15 pounds and 7–15 inches at the shoulder. A Yorkie-poo from a Toy Poodle parent may be smaller than one from a Miniature Poodle parent, but parent size does not make the outcome perfectly predictable. Puppies can also inherit different proportions and growth patterns from their parents.

For context, the AKC limits Yorkshire Terriers to 7 pounds or less. Toy Poodles are no more than 10 inches at the shoulder, while Miniature Poodles are over 10 inches and no more than 15 inches. Those are parent-breed standards, not official Yorkie-poo limits.

Be cautious with advertisements for “teacup Yorkie-poos.” Teacup is a marketing term, not a recognized variety. Selecting for extreme smallness may increase health and fragility concerns rather than produce a healthier companion.

Appearance and coat

Yorkie-poos may have a straight Yorkshire Terrier-like coat, a loose wave, or tight Poodle-like curls. Some have a silky texture, while others have a fluffier or coarser coat. They may be solid-colored, bi-colored, or tri-colored. Black, white, brown, tan, red, apricot, cream, silver, and gray are commonly reported colors.

“Low-shedding” is a more accurate description than “hypoallergenic.” Many Yorkie-poos shed relatively little, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens come from sources including skin flakes, saliva, and urine as well as hair, and individual people can react differently to the same dog. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the actual dog before committing to adoption.

Yorkie-poo temperament

Typical Yorkie-poos are affectionate, lively, intelligent, and highly interested in their people. They often enjoy being involved in household activities and may follow an owner from room to room. Their Poodle heritage can contribute to trainability and curiosity; their Yorkshire Terrier heritage may contribute to alertness, confidence, and a willingness to vocalize.

Those are tendencies, not guarantees. A Yorkie-poo’s behavior is shaped by inherited traits, early socialization, training, handling, health, and daily routine. One dog may be outgoing with strangers, while another is cautious. Some settle readily; others need deliberate training to relax and entertain themselves.

Barking and separation-related behavior

Barking is one of the most common challenges reported by Yorkie-poo owners. A dog may bark at sounds outside, when excited, when seeking attention, when bored, or when left alone. Repeatedly shouting at the dog can add excitement without teaching an alternative behavior.

Start with reward-based training: identify the trigger, reward a brief quiet pause, teach a cue such as “quiet,” and provide appropriate activities before the dog becomes restless. Puzzle toys, short training sessions, sniffing games, and scheduled play can help. Avoid reinforcing demand barking by immediately delivering attention every time it starts.

Because Yorkie-poos often want substantial human interaction, some develop distress when left alone. Build alone time gradually, beginning with absences short enough that the dog remains calm. A camera can help identify whether the dog is resting or becoming distressed. Persistent vocalizing, destruction, escape attempts, or toileting problems when alone should be discussed with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.

Are Yorkie-poos good apartment dogs?

They can live successfully in an apartment, but a small home does not remove the need for exercise, training, enrichment, and noise management. A Yorkie-poo that receives little to do may bark at hallway sounds or invent its own activities.

Apartment preparation should include:

  • Several opportunities for toileting and movement suited to the dog’s age and health.
  • Short, positive training sessions throughout the week.
  • Food puzzles, scent games, safe chews, and interactive play.
  • Gradual exposure to elevators, neighbors, traffic, and other everyday sounds.
  • A plan for alone time that does not require the dog to spend an entire workday isolated.

Exercise and training needs

Exercise guidance for Yorkie-poos varies. Some profiles suggest roughly 20–30 minutes of daily physical activity, while others recommend about an hour of combined physical and mental activity divided into shorter sessions. Neither number is a universal prescription. Age, size, health, weather, fitness, and individual energy level all matter.

Good activities include short walks, indoor games, fetch, tug, trick training, basic obedience, puzzle feeders, and nose-work games. Several brief sessions may suit a small dog better than one long, exhausting outing. Puppies, seniors, and dogs with orthopedic problems need especially careful adjustment.

Avoid repetitive, high-impact exercise if a veterinarian has identified patellar or other orthopedic problems. A Yorkie-poo may be enthusiastic enough to continue playing after it should rest, so monitor breathing, gait, enthusiasm, and recovery rather than judging exercise only by the dog’s willingness to continue.

A practical training approach

  1. Use rewards. Small food rewards, play, and praise make desired behavior worth repeating.
  2. Keep sessions short. Several sessions of a few minutes can be more productive than one long lesson.
  3. Teach household consistency. Everyone should use the same cues and rules for furniture, barking, greetings, and jumping.
  4. Socialize carefully. Introduce people, calm dogs, surfaces, sounds, handling, grooming, and travel gradually and positively.
  5. Train calm behavior. Reward settling on a mat, relaxing while an owner moves around, and brief periods of independent play.

Small dogs are sometimes given a pass for jumping, snapping, or ignoring cues because they are not physically intimidating. That can allow unwanted behavior to become established. Yorkie-poos benefit from the same clear, humane training expectations as larger dogs.

Grooming a Yorkie-poo

Daily brushing is a sensible default, particularly for a wavy or curly coat. Loose hair can remain trapped in a low-shedding coat, where it combines with moisture and friction to form mats. Check behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar or harness, and in the armpits—areas that commonly tangle.

Many Yorkie-poos need professional grooming about every 4–6 weeks. Some may require appointments more frequently, potentially 10–12 times a year, depending on coat growth, length, texture, and the owner’s brushing routine. A shorter trim reduces daily brushing but does not eliminate the need for skin, ear, nail, and dental care.

Routine care includes:

  • Daily toothbrushing with dog toothpaste and a suitable toothbrush.
  • Regular veterinary dental examinations, since small mouths and crowded teeth increase periodontal-disease risk.
  • Nail trimming before nails become long enough to change the dog’s gait.
  • Ear checks and cleaning only with products and frequency recommended by a veterinarian or groomer.
  • Bathing with dog-specific shampoo when needed, followed by thorough drying.
  • Early, positive acclimation to clippers, brushes, dryers, paw handling, and ear checks.

Yorkie-poo health concerns

Crossbreeding does not eliminate inherited disease. A Yorkie-poo can receive health risks associated with either Yorkshire Terriers or Poodles, and a mixed-breed label is not a substitute for health screening or veterinary care.

Potential concern What owners should know
Periodontal disease Crowded teeth and small mouths can make dental disease especially important. Daily home care and veterinary examinations matter.
Patellar luxation The kneecap can slip out of its normal position. Skipping, intermittent lameness, or reluctance to jump warrants veterinary assessment.
Tracheal collapse A persistent dry, “goose-honk” cough needs veterinary attention. A harness is preferable to pressure from a neck collar when tracheal disease is a concern.
Eye disease Progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts are among the possible concerns.
Allergies Environmental and food-related allergies may occur and can cause itching, recurrent ear problems, or skin changes.
Other conditions Thyroid disease, diabetes, and Cushing’s disease are also reported possible risks, not inevitable diagnoses.

Seek veterinary care for breathing difficulty, a recurring cough, sudden lameness, painful eyes, vision changes, persistent itching, unusual thirst or urination, or a marked change in appetite and energy. Very small puppies can also be vulnerable to low blood sugar, particularly if they are not eating, vomiting, or have diarrhea; this is an emergency question for a veterinarian rather than something to manage with internet advice.

Choosing a responsible Yorkie-poo breeder

There is no single AKC Yorkie-poo testing protocol because the cross is not an AKC-recognized breed. A responsible breeder should nevertheless be able to document relevant screening for both the Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle parents.

For a Toy Poodle, the AKC lists patella evaluation, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and PRCD progressive retinal atrophy DNA testing among recommended tests. For a Yorkshire Terrier, the listed tests include patella evaluation and an ophthalmologist evaluation. If the Poodle parent is Miniature rather than Toy, ask what additional testing is appropriate for that parent’s size and lineage.

Ask for paperwork identifying the actual sire and dam, and verify results independently where possible. “Health tested” without named tests, dates, results, and parent identification is too vague. Testing reduces the risk of passing on certain inherited disorders; it cannot guarantee that a puppy will never become ill.

Also look for a breeder who:

  • Allows you to see where puppies are raised and meet the mother, when appropriate.
  • Provides veterinary records, a written contract, and a plan for returning or rehoming the dog if necessary.
  • Raises puppies with appropriate handling and exposure rather than isolating them.
  • Does not promise a guaranteed size, coat, temperament, or “hypoallergenic” outcome.
  • Does not use extreme “teacup” size as the main selling point.

Feeding a Yorkie-poo

Choose a complete and balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage and made to recognized nutritional standards such as those established by AAFCO. The correct quantity depends on age, current weight, activity, health, body condition, and the food’s calorie density. A generic Yorkie-poo feeding chart cannot account for those differences.

Very young, unusually small puppies may need three or four small meals daily. Adults commonly eat two meals a day, but a veterinarian should guide the schedule for an underweight, ill, or exceptionally tiny puppy. Do not assume that a puppy is safe simply because it is eating some food; lethargy, weakness, trembling, vomiting, or refusal to eat requires prompt veterinary advice.

Measure meals, monitor body condition, and keep treats to about 10% or less of daily calories. A Yorkie-poo should be lean enough to have a visible waist without prominent bones, with a veterinarian confirming whether its weight is appropriate.

Yorkie-poo lifespan

Published lifespan estimates differ, ranging from about 10–15 years to 13–17 years. A cautious expectation is that many Yorkie-poos live into their early or mid-teens, provided they receive suitable nutrition, preventive care, dental attention, and prompt treatment for illness. Genetics, breeding quality, accidents, and individual health can all affect longevity.

Is a Yorkie-poo right for you?

A Yorkie-poo may be a good match if you want a small, interactive dog and can provide daily companionship, reward-based training, coat care, and dental maintenance. It may also suit an apartment, provided you can manage barking and provide enough activity.

Consider another type of dog—or arrange substantial daytime care—if the dog would routinely be alone most of the day. Think carefully if you want a completely quiet, maintenance-free, or perfectly predictable pet. Yorkie-poos may be small, but they are not effortless: their minds, coats, teeth, and social needs all require regular attention.

In homes with toddlers, direct supervision is essential. Their small bones make accidental injury a real concern, and children should be taught not to carry, squeeze, chase, or disturb the dog while it eats or sleeps. Interactions with larger dogs should also be managed to prevent rough play.

FAQ

Are Yorkie-poos hypoallergenic?

No. Yorkie-poos may shed relatively little, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergy responses vary, so spend time with the individual dog before adoption.

How much exercise does a Yorkie-poo need?

There is no single correct number. Many do well with short walks, indoor play, training, and puzzle or scent games spread through the day. Needs vary with age, health, size, and energy level; mental enrichment is as important as physical exercise.

Do Yorkie-poos bark a lot?

They can. Barking may increase with boredom, attention seeking, under-socialization, environmental triggers, or separation distress. Consistent reward-based training, enrichment, and gradual alone-time practice can help reduce it.

What health tests should a Yorkie-poo breeder provide?

Ask for documented testing of both parents. AKC recommendations include patella and ophthalmologist evaluations for Yorkshire Terriers; Toy Poodles should have patella and ophthalmologist evaluations plus PRCD progressive retinal atrophy DNA testing. Testing lowers risk but does not guarantee a disease-free puppy.

The Bottom Line

Yorkie-poos are affectionate, clever small companion dogs, but the cross has no official breed standard, so size, coat, temperament, and health cannot be guaranteed from the name alone. Expect regular brushing and grooming, daily training and enrichment, careful dental care, and a dog that may struggle with long periods alone. Meet the individual dog, check both parents’ health records, and choose temperament and welfare over promises of extreme smallness or guaranteed hypoallergenic traits.
