Your Cat’s Purr May Carry a Sound Signature—Here’s What It Can Tell You

A cat’s purr may carry acoustic clues that distinguish it from another cat, but measurable differences are not proof that people can reliably identify cats by listening.

Your cat’s low rumble may contain acoustic clues that distinguish it from another cat’s purr. A 2025 study found stronger individual acoustic signatures in purrs than in meows among the vocalizations it analyzed. That does not mean people can reliably identify any cat by ear, or that a purr reveals a cat’s personality or feelings.

Can you tell which cat is purring?

Possibly, in principle: a sound has an individual acoustic signature when measurable features differ from one animal to another. The 2025 paper “Meows encode less individual information than purrs and show greater variability in domestic than in wild cats”, published in Scientific Reports, reports that purrs in its analyzed recordings carried more individual information than meows.

This is evidence of acoustic differences in the study material, not a validated listening test. The finding does not establish that every cat has a purr that a person can recognize, or that casual listeners can consistently identify an unfamiliar cat from a recording. It also does not give a population-wide estimate of how many cats have individually identifiable purrs.

How do purrs compare with meows?

Vocalization What the evidence says What it does not establish
Purr The 2025 study reports stronger individual acoustic information in purrs than in meows in the vocalizations it analyzed. That people can reliably identify cats by listening, or that every cat’s purr is distinctive to a human listener.
Meow The same study reports less individual information than in purrs and greater variability in domestic than in wild cats. That meows carry no individual information, or that the result applies identically to every cat.

The comparison is about acoustic information in the study, not which sound is more meaningful to an owner. A recording can contain measurable differences without those differences being obvious or dependable to a person listening at home.

What does a purr say about your cat?

A purr alone is not a simple happiness meter. Cats may purr in affiliative or contented situations, but purring has also been described in contexts such as solicitation, stress, pain, and when a cat is close to death. A sound by itself cannot confirm a particular emotion or explain why a cat is purring.

Consider the whole situation: posture, facial expression, activity, appetite, and what is happening around the cat. If a purr accompanies signs of illness, pain, or unusual behavior, do not treat the purr as reassurance; seek veterinary advice about the other signs.

How is a purr made?

Purrs are generally low-pitched sounds produced continuously across inhalation and exhalation, usually with the mouth closed, according to a 2020 review in the Journal of Veterinary Science. The review also notes that acoustic parameters vary between cats and that many earlier studies included only a small number of individuals, which limits how broadly their findings can be applied.

The mechanics are still being investigated. In a 2023 study, researchers found that excised cat larynges could produce sounds in the typical purring range without neural input. Co-author Gerald E. Weissengruber said: “While our data do not fully reject the AMC hypothesis for purring, they do show that cat larynges can easily produce sounds in the purring range with fundamental frequencies of 25 to 30 Hz without neural input or muscular contraction.”

Because the larynges were tested outside living cats, that result does not provide a complete account of how a cat purrs in life. The university’s account describes purr production as more complex than previously thought; the finding should not be taken to mean that active muscle contributions in living cats have been ruled out.

What the finding means for cat owners

  • Your cat’s purr may contain acoustic features that differ from another cat’s.
  • The 2025 comparison found more individual information in purrs than in meows in the vocalizations it studied.
  • That does not prove a reliable owner-level recognition method or identify what a purr means emotionally.
  • Interpret purring alongside behavior and circumstances, not as a standalone diagnosis or mood reading.
