If your dog drank coffee, move them away from it and call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly—even if they seem fine. If your dog is having a seizure, struggling to breathe, not responding, or unconscious, go straight to the nearest veterinary hospital. Don’t induce vomiting or give your dog anything unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

What to do right now

  1. Stop further access. Move your dog away from the coffee, grounds, or other caffeine product.
  2. Record what happened. Note the product, estimated amount, and time of exposure. Keep its packaging or product information if available.
  3. Call for veterinary guidance promptly. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or—if you are in the United States—ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435. ASPCA says the service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply.
  4. Go directly to a veterinary hospital for emergency signs. If your dog has a seizure, trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or is unconscious, leave for the nearest veterinary hospital immediately and bring the product details.
  5. Do not try home treatment. Don’t induce vomiting, give food or medication, or use a purported antidote unless a veterinary professional directs you to. ASPCA recommends consulting a veterinary professional before taking action or giving anything after a possible poisoning.

Why coffee can be dangerous for dogs

Coffee and caffeine contain methylxanthines, which can cause poisoning in pets. Possible signs include vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, and seizures; severe poisoning can be fatal. ASPCA’s guidance does not establish a dog-specific dose threshold, so don’t try to decide safety from an online dose chart or an estimate alone. ASPCA’s poisoning and toxic-substances guidance advises contacting a professional rather than waiting for symptoms.

What to tell the veterinarian or poison-control team

Have these details ready so the professional can assess the exposure and advise you:

  • Your dog’s age, breed, weight, and health status
  • What was consumed, including the coffee or caffeine product
  • Your best estimate of how much was consumed
  • When it happened and any signs you have noticed

Keep packaging or other identifying product information nearby. If you are outside the United States, contact a local veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, or animal poison service.

Which signs mean go to the emergency vet?

ASPCA identifies seizures, trouble breathing, unresponsiveness, and unconsciousness as reasons to seek immediate hospital care. For suspected ingestion with mild signs—or no signs—call a veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, or poison control promptly for individualized triage. A dog appearing normal does not rule out a problem: some poison effects can be delayed, and ASPCA advises not waiting for symptoms before contacting its poison-control team. ASPCA’s guidance for a possible poisoning says to contact APCC even when a pet is acting normally.

Can you tell how much coffee is dangerous?

The ASPCA passages cited here do not give a clinical toxicity threshold, coffee-specific timeline, or individual prognosis for dogs. The risk depends on the dog and the exposure details, so a veterinarian or poison-control professional should assess the product, estimated amount, and timing rather than relying on a general number.
