A dog hernia may look like a soft lump, cause straining or pain, or—if it is inside the chest—show up as labored breathing with no visible swelling. A veterinarian must confirm what type it is and whether tissue or an organ is trapped. Seek urgent veterinary care for breathing difficulty, a painful firm lump, vomiting with a suspected hernia, marked weakness, or inability to urinate.
What a hernia is—and what a lump can’t tell you
A hernia forms when tissue or an organ pushes through an opening or weakened area where it would not normally protrude. Depending on the location, the contents may include fat, abdominal lining, intestine, bladder, or another organ. The lump’s location can suggest the type, but it cannot show reliably what is inside or whether the tissue is compromised.

Some hernias are visible beneath the skin; a diaphragmatic hernia is inside the body and may have no external lump. A veterinary examination is needed to distinguish a hernia from other causes of swelling and to decide whether imaging or urgent treatment is necessary.

| Type | Where it occurs | Signs an owner may notice | How it is assessed and treated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umbilical | At or near the navel | A soft belly-button swelling, often more noticeable when a puppy stands, barks, cries, or strains. It is usually painless. | A veterinarian examines the defect and its contents. Small puppy defects may close as the puppy grows; persistent defects may need surgical repair. |
| Inguinal | Groin, on one or both sides | A swelling that may be soft and painless or, if complicated, firm and painful. Reddened or bruised skin, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or difficulty urinating can occur. | Examination helps assess the swelling and contents. Repair is generally recommended; trapped organs require immediate attention. |
| Perineal | Beside the anus | Swelling near the anus, straining to defecate, constipation, or difficulty urinating. More common in middle-aged to older intact male dogs. | Rectal examination and sometimes X-rays or ultrasound help identify the involved tissues. Surgery is the primary treatment; inability to urinate is an emergency. |
| Diaphragmatic | Through a defect or tear in the diaphragm, allowing abdominal contents into the chest | There may be no visible lump. Labored breathing can occur; some chronic or congenital cases show few signs. | Chest X-rays commonly establish the diagnosis. Surgery is performed after stabilization when needed. |
Umbilical hernia
An umbilical hernia is a protrusion through the area around the navel. VCA Animal Hospitals says small defects under about 1 cm may close by age 3 to 4 months. If a defect persists, a veterinarian may recommend repair, particularly when intestine is involved. Most do not pose an immediate threat, but tissue that becomes trapped and loses its blood supply is an emergency. The exact incidence and cause are unknown, according to VCA’s umbilical hernia guidance.

Inguinal hernia
An inguinal hernia forms when tissue or abdominal organs pass through the inguinal ring into the groin. A soft, painless swelling is different from a firm, painful swelling that cannot be reduced, which may indicate a complication. Do not try to push it back yourself. VCA recommends repair at diagnosis in general and immediate surgery if the bladder, intestine, or uterus is trapped; see its inguinal hernia guidance.
Perineal hernia
When muscles near the anus weaken or tear, the bladder, intestine, or fat can bulge under the skin. Straining to defecate may be an early clue, but difficulty urinating is especially concerning if the bladder is trapped. A veterinarian may perform a rectal examination and use radiographs or ultrasound to determine what has moved through the defect. Surgery is the primary treatment. The MSD Veterinary Manual reports a 10–46% recurrence rate for perineal hernias; that range applies to this type, not to hernias generally. See the MSD Veterinary Manual’s perineal hernia guidance.

Diaphragmatic hernia
A congenital opening or traumatic tear in the diaphragm can let abdominal organs enter the chest. Blunt trauma, such as a vehicle collision or fall, is a common cause in dogs. Breathing may become labored, and serious cases can rapidly become life-threatening; some chronic or congenital cases have few obvious signs. X-rays commonly help confirm the diagnosis. Treatment is surgical, with stabilization first if the dog has trauma or shock. See MSD Veterinary Manual guidance and VCA’s diaphragmatic hernia overview.

Not every hernia is automatically an emergency. However, trapped or strangulated tissue, obstruction, and breathing compromise can make prompt care critical. If the swelling is painless and your dog seems well, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than assuming it is harmless or waiting without guidance.
How veterinarians diagnose a hernia
The veterinarian will ask when the swelling or other signs began and whether there has been trauma, straining, vomiting, or a change in urination. Depending on the suspected type, assessment may include:

Visible location alone is not enough to identify the contents. A veterinarian’s findings determine whether monitoring or surgical treatment is appropriate and how quickly it is needed.
How hernias in dogs are treated
Treatment depends on the hernia’s location, size, contents, complications, and the dog’s stability. Surgery is common for persistent or complicated hernias, but the timing and preparation differ by type.

Quick Recap
What to do while arranging care
- Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic. Describe where the swelling is, when it appeared, and any breathing, vomiting, pain, weakness, or urination problems.
- Keep your dog calm and limit activity. If breathing is difficult or your dog is weak, minimize handling and follow the clinic’s instructions for transport.
- Do not manipulate the lump or give medication on your own. Wait for veterinary guidance on feeding, medication, and next steps.
