Cats.com’s 2026 list names Tiki Cat After Dark Chicken Recipe in Broth as its overall pick, alongside nine other wet, dry, and fresh foods. Treat that ranking as a starting point for a conversation with your veterinarian—not as a prescription or a promise of better glucose control. Food choice depends on the cat’s treatment, appetite, weight goals, and other health conditions.
Which foods are on the 2026 list?
The ten products below are the selections named by Cats.com in its article updated March 24, 2026. They are not all prescription diets, and the ranking does not establish that each product is suitable for every diabetic cat. Product recipes and labels can change, so check the current package and ask the treating veterinary team before switching.

Cats.com warns that its comparison-table figures are automatically calculated from guaranteed analyses and may not match typical nutrient values. The reported figures above are not a like-for-like comparison: they use different measures, and most products have no carbohydrate figure stated here. Do not infer that a product is low in carbohydrate from its name, format, or place in the ranking.
How should you choose among them?
Veterinary guidance supports considering reduced-carbohydrate food for many diabetic cats, but it does not set one target or one product that fits every patient. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2026 Diabetes Management Guidelines describe dietary therapy as typically complementing insulin or an SGLT2 inhibitor. The 2025 International Cat Care consensus guidelines likewise advise considering low-carbohydrate food while accounting for the individual cat and caregiver.
#1 Best Overall
- Low carbohydrate and high protein cat food to help support healthy glucose levels in cats
- St/Ox Defense: This Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals
- Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets dry cat food featuring high protein content to help maintain lean body mass and ideal body condition
- Great tasting cat food nutrition that’s rich in antioxidants
- Cat kibble formula available in dry and canned (loaf and Savory Selects) to meet your cat's preference
- Start with the cat’s medical needs. Kidney disease and other concurrent conditions can change which nutrients matter most. Ask the treating veterinarian to weigh diabetes management against the rest of the cat’s health.
- Include appetite and acceptance. A theoretically suitable food is not useful if the cat will not eat it. International Cat Care advises against pursuing a particular diet at the cost of food intake or unreasonable financial pressure.
- Compare nutrients on the same basis. Dry-matter percentages, as-fed values, starch, and total carbohydrate are not equivalent. Calories, protein, and weight-management needs also belong in the comparison.
- Consider practical consistency. Reliable availability, cost, and the caregiver’s ability to serve the food consistently can affect whether a plan is workable.
- Do not treat a product ranking as proof of a result. The Cats.com list does not establish that any of these foods controls glucose, reduces insulin needs, or produces remission in an individual cat.
What the named options do—and do not—tell you
The list includes canned and other wet foods, fresh recipes, and dry kibble, as well as two products explicitly named as veterinary diets. The product names alone do not establish each recipe’s current nutrient profile, calorie content, suitability for a particular cat, or whether veterinary authorization is needed. Use the current product information and your veterinarian’s advice to resolve those questions.
How do you compare carbohydrate figures on labels?
Carbohydrate is not always listed in a food’s guaranteed analysis. AAHA explains that, when it is absent, an estimate can be made by subtracting listed protein, fat, fiber, moisture, and ash from 100. If ash is not listed, AAHA provides estimated ash ranges for canned and dry foods. This produces an estimate, not a laboratory measurement; AAHA recommends comparing nutrients on a metabolizable-energy basis.

- Check the latest analysis for the specific recipe, not just the brand or product family.
- Find out whether a stated number is as-fed, dry-matter, or metabolizable-energy based, and whether it means starch or total carbohydrate.
- If carbohydrate is omitted, ask your veterinarian whether an estimate from the label is appropriate and how to compare it with other foods.
- Use the result as one input in the diet decision, alongside calories, protein, appetite, treatment, and any comorbidities.
How should you change food after a diabetes diagnosis?
Do not make an abrupt diet change at the same time treatment begins unless the veterinary team directs you to do so. International Cat Care recommends initially offering a familiar, preferred diet when insulin or an SGLT2 inhibitor is introduced, waiting until the cat is eating well before changing food, then transitioning gradually while monitoring intake. A change in food can affect diabetes management, so coordinate the timing and monitoring plan with the treating veterinarian.
Is grain-free dry cat food good for diabetic cats?
Not necessarily. “Grain-free” does not mean low-carbohydrate, and the label alone cannot establish whether a recipe suits a diabetic cat. Check the specific food’s nutrient information on a comparable basis and discuss it with the veterinarian. A dry food is not automatically unsuitable, but a cat’s overall treatment plan, food acceptance, and other health needs matter.

Should diabetic cats eat dry food?
Wet or canned food is a reasonable option to consider, and veterinary guidance discusses reduced-carbohydrate diets that may be provided as veterinary diabetic diets or complete commercial wet food. That does not make dry food categorically wrong or mean that every canned food is appropriate. Choose based on the individual cat’s intake, nutrient needs, and treatment plan rather than format alone.
How many times a day should a diabetic cat eat?
There is no meal count in the cited guidance that applies to every cat. Ask the treating veterinarian to set a feeding schedule that works with the cat’s medication, appetite, and routine. Keep the team informed about missed meals or changes in intake, particularly during a diet transition.

Can a diet change put diabetes into remission?
Remission is possible for some cats, but it should not be expected or attributed to a particular food. AAHA notes that remission has been reported in evidence involving combinations of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets and insulin, while emphasizing that remission is not assured. International Cat Care also notes that remission can occur on higher-carbohydrate diets. Do not change or reduce medication on the basis of a food choice; treatment adjustments belong with the veterinary team.
