10 Celebrities Who Owned or Kept Exotic Animals

From Bubbles the chimpanzee to Mike Tyson’s tigers and Audrey Hepburn’s fawn, these ten celebrity animal stories reveal the difference between publicity-friendly companionship and the demanding reality of exotic-animal welfare.

Celebrities have kept, cared for, or become closely associated with animals far outside the usual definition of a pet: a chimpanzee at a private estate, tigers owned by a heavyweight champion, a monkey stopped by customs officials, and an ocelot taken into public life by a surrealist artist.

These stories are memorable because the animals were not ordinary companions. They also reveal an important distinction: fame, money, hand-raising, and access to private property do not turn a wild animal into a domesticated one.

Primates, big cats, kinkajous, large snakes, and other exotic species need specialized housing, nutrition, veterinary care, social arrangements, security, and legal documentation.

1. Michael Jackson and Bubbles the chimpanzee

Michael Jackson adopted Bubbles in the 1980s, and the chimpanzee quickly became one of the most recognizable animals associated with a celebrity. Bubbles appeared in publicity surrounding Jackson, traveled with him, and was linked with life at Neverland Ranch, where Jackson also kept other exotic animals, including giraffes.

Bubbles’ story is often remembered as a charming piece of pop-culture history, but it also shows why chimpanzees are unsuitable as ordinary pets. Chimpanzees are powerful, intelligent, highly social animals whose needs change dramatically as they mature. A young chimp may appear manageable in photographs while becoming much more difficult to house and care for safely as an adult.

Later reporting placed Bubbles in sanctuary care rather than in Jackson’s private home. A 2026 report said he remained at the Center for Great Apes in Florida. The precise details of every transition in his life should not be overstated, but the broad outcome is clear: Bubbles is not currently a household pet. His later sanctuary placement is a useful reminder that celebrity access cannot eliminate the long-term demands of keeping a great ape.

2. Mike Tyson and his tigers

Mike Tyson has spoken publicly about keeping exotic animals, including “lots of tigers.” In an Esquire interview, he also mentioned lions, bears, pigeons, and vultures. Contemporary coverage described a white Bengal tiger at his home and showed how unusually close Tyson’s interactions with the animal could be.

Tyson’s tigers later became part of the cultural imagery surrounding The Hangover, but the real ownership history is more significant than the movie reference. A tiger is not a large version of a domestic cat. It is a powerful, solitary wild carnivore requiring specialized space, management, food, veterinary care, and barriers capable of protecting both the animal and the public.

Tyson’s personal comments about feeling safe around his animals should not be treated as animal-care advice. Familiarity with one individual tiger does not make the species predictable or appropriate for a private home, and a celebrity’s resources do not remove the risks involved.

3. Justin Bieber and Mally the capuchin monkey

Justin Bieber owned a capuchin monkey named Mally. The case became widely known after German customs officials seized Mally at Munich Airport in March 2013, when Bieber arrived without the required paperwork.

The incident was not merely a paperwork mishap. Authorities and animal-care officials had to deal with customs rules, quarantine requirements, and the monkey’s welfare. Shelter officials said Mally was very young and had been separated from its mother prematurely. Those details illustrated the specialized needs that can be hidden by a small animal’s appealing appearance.

Mally’s story is a particularly clear example of why exotic-animal ownership crosses several areas at once: animal welfare, international transport, public-health procedures, and local wildlife law. A capuchin may be small enough to carry, but it is still a wild primate with complex social and developmental needs—not a travel accessory.

4. Paris Hilton and Baby Luv the kinkajou

Paris Hilton kept a kinkajou named Baby Luv during the 2000s. The animal attracted attention partly because kinkajous are small, expressive, and visually more manageable than many other exotic mammals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That appearance can be misleading. A kinkajou is a wild mammal, not a domesticated substitute for a cat or dog. In 2006, a report said Baby Luv bit Hilton while they were playing. The incident brought attention to the risks of treating a wild animal as though it had the predictable behavior of a companion species.

Because the available account comes primarily from entertainment reporting, “reported pet kinkajou” is the most careful description. The broader lesson does not depend on the celebrity details: small size does not mean simple care, low risk, or suitability for a household.

5. Salvador Dalí and Babou the ocelot

Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí was famously associated with Babou, a pet ocelot. The animal appeared with Dalí in public and was described in accounts of the artist’s elaborate social life and dinner parties.

Babou fit Dalí’s carefully cultivated image of theatrical eccentricity. An ocelot at the side of a famous artist made an unforgettable photograph and turned an unusual animal into part of a public persona. But the spectacle should not obscure the animal itself. Ocelots are wild cats with species-specific behavior and needs, and public settings such as restaurants and crowded social events can be stressful and unsafe for both an animal and the people around it.

This is best understood as a story about celebrity image as much as ownership. The fact that an exotic animal can be incorporated into a public performance does not mean that such an arrangement is responsible or appropriate.

6. Audrey Hepburn and her fawn

Audrey Hepburn’s relationship with a fawn began as part of filmmaking rather than as an attempt to build a permanent exotic-animal collection. While filming Green Mansions in 1958, Hepburn cared for a young deer so it would bond with her and follow her character on camera.

The fawn, known in sources as either Ip or Pippin, reportedly accompanied Hepburn to parties, shops, and home settings. She later kept the animal after filming ended. That makes this case different from the stories involving large predators or primates: the relationship was connected to the practical demands of a production and animal-and-performer bonding for the camera.

It is still important not to turn the story into a general endorsement of keeping deer. A fawn raised around people can become habituated to them, while its long-term needs and adult behavior remain those of a deer. “Cared for and later kept a fawn” is more accurate than implying that Hepburn maintained a lifelong private collection of exotic animals.

7. Aaron Paul and two Burmese pythons

Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul said on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he had owned two giant albino Burmese pythons named Zeppelin and Floyd. He also explained that he eventually gave them up when their size and appetites became too difficult to manage.

The account offers an unusually direct example of an owner acknowledging that an exotic animal’s needs can outgrow a household’s capacity. Burmese pythons are large constrictors, and a young snake’s size can give a misleading impression of what long-term care will involve. Their enclosure, feeding, handling, security, and veterinary needs all have to be considered before ownership—not after the animal has become difficult to manage.

Paul’s decision to surrender the snakes is not a care guide, and the available account does not establish every detail of their later placement. It does, however, underline a practical point: planning for an exotic animal means planning for its adult size and lifetime needs.

8. Janet Jackson and the Jackson family’s pet snakes

Janet Jackson discussed the Jackson family’s rainbow boa, Muscles, in a historical interview and described herself as a snake enthusiast. The interview also recorded her saying that she had wanted to own a king cobra because of its danger.

The wording matters here. The available source establishes the family’s pet snake and Janet’s interest in snakes more clearly than it establishes that she personally owned a king cobra. It is therefore more accurate to describe her as associated with the Jackson family’s exotic snakes than to claim that she kept a king cobra as a pet.

A king cobra would also be a particularly dangerous animal to keep privately. Interest in a species because it is frightening or powerful should never be confused with evidence that it can be safely maintained in a household. Venomous reptiles bring additional risks involving containment, emergency response, veterinary access, and local regulation.

9. Chris Brown and Fiji the capuchin monkey

In 2017, entertainment reports identified a capuchin monkey named Fiji as Chris Brown’s pet after videos showed the animal with Brown’s daughter. Those reports said Brown, rather than his daughter, was the owner.

Because the available evidence is based on entertainment reporting, the careful wording is that Brown was reported to own Fiji. The record supplied here does not establish long-term custody or the monkey’s current status, so neither should be presented as fact.

The case nevertheless belongs in this list because it reflects a recurring pattern: young primates are often presented as cute, dressed-up, humanlike companions. Their appearance can conceal complex social, developmental, and behavioral needs. A child appearing beside a monkey in a video does not make the animal a suitable family pet or establish that the arrangement meets those needs.

10. Tippi Hedren and the big cats of Roar

Actor Tippi Hedren became closely associated with captive big cats through the production and aftermath of Roar. Her history included living and working closely with lions and other big cats, and those experiences eventually led to the creation of the Shambala Preserve and the Roar Foundation.

Hedren’s story should not be reduced to an anecdote about a celebrity keeping a tiger in a living room. It involved film production, private interaction with captive big cats, and a later shift toward sanctuary work and animal advocacy. The sanctuary mission is an important part of the record because it reflects the reality that many captive wild animals need specialized facilities rather than ordinary domestic homes.

Shambala’s history also provides a more responsible lens for understanding celebrity exotic-animal stories. The relevant question is not only who once had access to a big cat, but what kind of lifelong care the animal ultimately required and whether that care could be provided safely outside a professional sanctuary.

What these stories get wrong about exotic pets

Wild animals do not become domesticated simply because a person hand-raises them, gives them a name, or develops a close bond with them. Domestication is a multigenerational process involving a species—not a personality trait that an individual animal acquires through celebrity attention.

National Geographic’s educational material warns that even well-intentioned owners are generally out of their depth when attempting to care for exotic animals at home. The RSPCA likewise emphasizes that exotic species may require highly specialized housing, environmental conditions, temperature control, nutrition, and veterinary care.

  • Young animals can be deceptive. A baby chimpanzee, tiger, monkey, or snake may seem manageable before reaching adult size and strength.
  • Social needs are easy to underestimate. Primates in particular need appropriate social relationships, enrichment, and space—not simply human attention.
  • Wild behavior does not disappear. Bites, defensive reactions, predatory behavior, escape attempts, and destructive behavior can occur even when an animal has been hand-raised.
  • Legal requirements vary. Ownership, transport, quarantine, importation, and public exhibition may all be regulated differently by country, state, or municipality.
  • Specialist care is expensive and difficult to find. A suitable exotic-animal veterinarian, secure enclosure, emergency plan, and long-term placement option are essential considerations.
  • Sanctuary is not the same as a private home. A reputable sanctuary provides purpose-built care and manages animals that cannot simply be released into the wild.

The responsible takeaway

The celebrity exotic-pet stories are entertaining because they sound unreal: Bubbles at Neverland, tigers connected with a champion boxer, an ocelot at a surrealist’s dinner table, and a fawn following a movie star through everyday settings. But the long-term pattern is less glamorous. Several cases involved customs intervention, surrender, relocation, or sanctuary care; others are known only through limited entertainment reporting.

Fame does not make exotic-pet ownership possible in the way these photographs suggest. It can instead make an unsuitable or temporary arrangement visible to millions of people. For anyone considering an unusual animal, the appropriate starting point is species-specific welfare guidance, local law, qualified veterinary advice, and a realistic plan for the animal’s entire life—not a celebrity story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do wild animals become domesticated when celebrities raise them?

No. A wild animal does not become domesticated because it is hand-raised, given a name, or closely bonded with a person. Species such as chimpanzees, tigers, ocelots, kinkajous, and capuchin monkeys retain complex behavioral and environmental needs.

Is it legal to keep an exotic animal as a pet?

Some exotic-animal ownership and transport is restricted or prohibited, but the rules vary by country, state, and municipality. Importation, quarantine, public exhibition, enclosure standards, and veterinary requirements may also apply.

Where is Bubbles the chimpanzee now?

Bubbles was later placed in sanctuary care and has been associated with the Center for Great Apes in Florida. He should not be described as a current household pet.

The Bottom Line

These cases are best remembered as celebrity history, not as pet-care examples. Wild animals retain complex needs and risks regardless of their owner’s wealth or fame, and responsible care may ultimately require a licensed sanctuary or other specialist facility rather than a private home.
