No couch fabric is completely cat-proof. For fewer claw snags, prioritize a dense, smooth weave with few or no raised loops. For easier hair cleanup, look for a surface that releases hair readily—and remember that color and pattern affect how visible it is. The best choice depends on whether your cat scratches, sheds heavily, or does little damage, as well as on the upholstery’s actual care instructions.

These are material and construction categories, not a universal ranking. Fabric labels cover a range of weaves, finishes, and care requirements, so inspect the specific upholstery rather than choosing by name alone.

1. Microfiber or microsuede
Dense synthetic microfiber can give claws fewer places to catch, and hair may be removable with a vacuum or lint roller. Some versions attract hair through static, and spot cleaning can leave water marks. 2. Tightly woven performance polyester
A flat, low-loop construction is more relevant to snag risk than the word “performance.” That label can refer to stain- or moisture-related features, but it does not by itself establish claw resistance. Ask for the exact weave and care details.

3. Polypropylene or olefin performance fabric
Revolution Fabrics describes its own polypropylene upholstery as stain resistant, easy to clean, and able to release hair. Those are maker claims about its fabrics, not a guarantee for every olefin upholstery. The company reports 30,000 to 75,000+ Wyzenbeek double rubs for its pet-friendly fabrics and lists one indoor/outdoor fabric at 102,000 double rubs; these are product-specific figures, not a comparison across fabric categories. 4. Polyester performance velvet
A short, dense pile without loose loops may snag less readily than an open or looped fabric. Velvet can show directional marks or impressions, and hair retention varies by finish. Do not assume all velvet has the same construction or performance.
5. Leather
Hair can generally be wiped from leather rather than lifted out of a weave. A thicker or distressed grain may make small marks less conspicuous, but claws can still scratch or puncture it. Leather is a more plausible option when the cat is a light scratcher and visible scuffs are acceptable than when a cat persistently claws furniture.

6. Dense, flat canvas
A tight canvas construction may be preferable to an open natural weave, but “canvas” alone says nothing conclusive about hair release, abrasion performance, or cleanability. Check a sample and the care label.
7. Dense denim upholstery
A flat, low-loop denim-like upholstery may be worth testing as a swatch, but available source guidance does not establish denim as a proven cat-performance choice. Judge the actual weave and cleaning instructions rather than relying on the material name.
8. Tight performance chenille

9. Tightly woven indoor/outdoor upholstery
Some maker-specified fabrics are designed for easier cleaning and high abrasion resistance. Confirm that the exact fabric is suitable for indoor furniture, and that its feel and care requirements work for your household; outdoor upholstery is not one uniform category.

This is a furniture feature or cover strategy, not a fiber type. Whether a cover can be machine washed depends on its construction and the sofa’s care label. Washable covers can make maintenance easier, but they do not prevent claw damage.
What matters most for claws, hair, and cleaning
To reduce claw snagging
Choose a dense, smooth, tightly woven surface with few raised loops. Loose bouclé, gauze, open linen or tweed, and pronounced loops give claws more opportunities to catch. A fabric’s abrasion rating measures wear under a specified test; it does not by itself test snagging. To make shed hair easier to remove
Smooth surfaces can make hair easier to lift. Hair does not lodge in leather as it can in woven upholstery, while some microfiber can attract hair through static. Choose color and pattern with your cat’s coat in mind: they change how visible shed hair looks, even when cleanup is equally easy.
To clean safely and assess wear
Read the furniture maker’s cleaning code, fiber content, and care directions. A stain-resistant claim does not establish that the fabric resists claws, can be machine washed, or tolerates household cleaners. For any durability number, ask which test produced it and what product it applies to.

Revolution Fabrics reports 30,000 to 75,000+ double rubs for its pet-friendly fabrics and 102,000 for one indoor/outdoor fabric. Polipol says most of its pet-friendly collection reaches nearly 100,000 Martindale abrasion cycles and describes a BS8479:2008 snag test using a test needle to simulate claw abrasion. These figures come from different makers and measures: Wyzenbeek double rubs and Martindale cycles are not directly comparable, and abrasion results do not create a universal ranking for claw snagging, hair release, or cleaning. How to choose upholstery for your cat
- Ask for the specifics. Get the exact fiber content, weave description, cleaning code, and abrasion test method. “Pet-friendly” and “performance” are not enough to establish how a fabric will behave.
- Inspect a swatch. Run a fingernail lightly across the surface to see whether it catches on loops or raised texture. This is a practical screening check, not a validated test. Consider how visible your cat’s hair will be against the color and pattern.
- Match the fabric to your cat. For a persistent scratcher, prioritize a low-loop surface and provide an appropriate scratching alternative. For a heavy shedder, prioritize easy hair removal. Leather may suit a light scratcher if you are comfortable with possible scuffs.
- Confirm care requirements. Follow the upholstery maker’s label. Cleaning advice for one branded fabric is not automatically safe for another.
- Plan for everyday maintenance. A washable throw, removable covers, a rubber pet-hair upholstery brush, or a lint roller can help with upkeep. Keep a suitable scratching surface nearby; none of these measures guarantees that furniture will avoid damage.
Should you trust a “pet-friendly” label?
Treat it as a starting point, not a standardized promise. Revolution Fabrics ranks its own polypropylene performance fabrics most favorably, followed by tightly woven microfiber, describes leather as mixed, and rates cotton or linen and loose bouclé poorly. Those are the maker’s judgments about its category recommendations, not neutral laboratory rankings of every product. The company also advises blotting rather than rubbing and warns that aftermarket protectors or solvent cleaners may affect its own warranty. Follow those directions only for its fabrics; use other makers’ care guidance for other upholstery.
In a Tom’s Guide interview published August 29, 2025, Barker and Stonehouse Head of Product and Design Lena Gierasinska said, “Microfibre is a brilliant option for pet households as it resists scratching and is easy to wipe clean.” That is expert design guidance, not a controlled comparative test.
