A cat can have food, water, and shelter and still feel unsettled. Security also depends on having a retreat, room to move between essential resources, predictable routines, and control over contact with people. These 10 practical changes can help a newly adopted, shy, frightened, or unsettled cat feel more at ease; let your cat’s behavior guide the pace.
1. Set up a quiet retreat
Choose a low-traffic spot where your cat can rest without being approached or watched constantly. A cardboard box, carrier with its door secured open, or enclosed bed can work. The retreat should fit one cat and have sides; a raised location is useful when your cat can reach it comfortably. A purchased bed is optional: a box may provide the same kind of hiding place.

2. Keep an escape route open
Where practical, arrange the retreat so your cat can enter and leave from more than one side. A hiding spot with only one narrow exit may feel like a trap, especially if another pet or person can block it. Never pull a cat out of its hiding place to make it interact.
3. Offer a stable place to perch
Cats may feel more secure when they can observe a room from above. Provide a stable perch or accessible furniture, and choose a height that suits your cat’s age, confidence, and mobility. Make sure the route up and down is safe rather than requiring a difficult jump.

4. Give essential resources separate spaces
Keep food, water, litter, scratching, resting, and play areas apart rather than clustering everything together. This matters especially in homes with multiple cats: one animal should not be able to block another’s access to a needed resource. Watch how the cats actually move through the home and adjust placements if a doorway, corridor, or other bottleneck creates tension.
5. Make daily routines predictable
Feed your cat at consistent times and keep everyday interactions calm and steady. Predictable meals and a familiar rhythm can make the home easier to anticipate. Changes may still be necessary, but introduce them gradually when you can.

6. Let your cat choose contact
Allow your cat to approach, and pay attention to whether it wants to continue. Avoid forced petting, picking up, or introductions to unfamiliar people or animals. Cats differ in how much contact they enjoy and where they like to be touched; a cat walking away is a cue to give it space.

For a necessary lift, support your cat behind the front legs and under the hindquarters so its body is supported. Do not lift a cat by the scruff or front legs. The ASPCA’s general cat-care guidance describes this supported hold. If handling causes distress, stop when it is safe to do so and ask your veterinarian for advice on the specific task.

8. Make room for play and foraging
Use interactive toys that move like prey, giving your cat a chance to chase and occasionally catch the toy. This can make play more satisfying than a game in which the target is never reachable. Food puzzles are another option for cats that enjoy working for some of their food; introduce one simply and see how your cat responds.
9. Reduce startling input and preserve familiar scent
Keep loud noise and unfamiliar or strongly scented products away from your cat’s important resting and resource areas when possible. Cats use scent to make sense of their surroundings, so avoid unnecessarily washing or wiping away the places where your cat regularly rubs. A scent product is not a substitute for a retreat, accessible resources, and respectful interaction.

10. Notice changes and get help when needed
Look for changes in hiding, eating, toileting, activity, or social behavior, and consider when they began and what else changed at home. Fear-related cues can include a crouched posture, ears turned sideways or back, rapid breathing, dilated pupils, raised fur, hissing, or growling. These signs need context and do not diagnose a condition on their own.
