The most dependable way to keep a cat away from a houseplant is to block access to it. If a plant could be toxic, remove it or keep it behind a barrier your cat cannot get past; sprays, alternatives, and other deterrents may not stop every cat. Cats may chew greenery out of curiosity, play, or a desire for vegetable matter, so the best plan combines safety with a setup that suits your cat and home.
Start with plant safety
Before choosing a deterrent, identify each plant and check its exact name against a cat-specific toxicity listing. The ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants database is searchable, but the ASPCA says its list is not all-inclusive. It also cautions that eating any plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset.

In an October 13, 2025 article, the ASPCA describes common calcium oxalate plants including pothos, peace lily, philodendron, monstera, and dieffenbachia. Chewing them can cause mouth irritation, drooling, retching, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Difficulty swallowing or breathing calls for urgent veterinary attention. See the ASPCA’s houseplant safety guidance.

10 ways to keep cats out of plants
These are practical strategies, not ten treatments proven in comparative trials. The sources do not establish success rates; what works depends on the particular cat, plant, and room.
-
Remove toxic plants
When a plant may harm your cat and separation is unreliable, take it out of the home. This avoids relying on a deterrent that may fail.
-
Put plants behind a closed door
Keep vulnerable plants in a room the cat cannot enter, and make sure the door stays shut. This is a direct way to block access.

-
Enclose a plant with a stable barrier
Use a physical enclosure that prevents your cat from reaching leaves or soil. Check that it cannot tip, shift, or leave openings the cat can use.
-
Choose an inaccessible location
Place plants where your cat cannot jump or climb to them. A shelf is not out of reach if the cat can get onto it from nearby furniture.
-
Offer oat grass
A small pot of oat grass may give a cat seeking greens an acceptable alternative. It may not stop the cat from chewing other houseplants.

Ask your veterinarian about food-based changes
Cornell mentions lettuce, parsley, or a higher-fiber cat food as possibilities for cats seeking vegetable matter. Ask your veterinarian before changing your cat’s diet or adding foods, so the choice suits the individual cat.
-
Use a commercial repellent only if its label fits
Choose a product only when its label supports use on the particular plant and around cats. Do not assume a repellent is safe for every plant or pet, and do not improvise a household mixture.

-
Try double-sided tape near an access point
VCA lists double-sided tape among behavior-management options. Position it where it cannot stick to your cat’s fur or paws, and treat it as a deterrent rather than a barrier that guarantees protection.

Choose a strategy based on the risk
| Approach | What it does | Best fit | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove the plant, close a door, or use a physical barrier | Prevents access when the setup works | Toxic plants or cats that keep chewing | The room, enclosure, or location must actually remain inaccessible |
| Offer oat grass, catnip, or catmint | Redirects a cat seeking greenery | As an alternative alongside safe plant storage | The cat may still chew houseplants |
| Repellent, motion-activated device, or tape | Attempts to discourage approach | Situations where a carefully chosen environmental deterrent is practical | Response varies; assess label suitability and avoid exposure, fear, or injury |
Cornell Feline Health Center puts the access-control principle plainly: “The only way to guarantee protection for both your houseplants and your cat is to block access to the plants.” Its guidance also notes that alternatives such as oat grass may not prevent houseplant chewing. Read Cornell’s guidance on destructive behavior.

What to avoid
Do not use physical punishment. VCA warns that punishment can frighten or injure cats and is seldom effective. For the same reason, do not apply a DIY substance to a plant on the assumption that it is harmless: check the safety of any product for the cat and plant, and follow its label.
If your cat chews a potentially toxic plant, contact a veterinarian for advice. If the cat has difficulty swallowing or breathing, seek urgent veterinary care.
