12 Cats With Round Faces: How to Choose One for Your Home

Round faces are a visual trait, not an official breed category. Compare familiar breeds, understand grooming differences, and weigh welfare before choosing a cat.

There is no official “round-face” cat category or universally agreed top-12 ranking. The look appears in several breeds, but their coats, facial structure and welfare considerations differ. Persian, Burmese and Scottish Fold breed profiles explicitly describe rounded facial features; other cats in this guide are included as recognizable possibilities, not as a claim that every individual has the same face shape.

Use appearance as a starting point, not a predictor of temperament or health. Meet the individual cat, ask about its health history, and discuss any concerns with a veterinarian. No photos are included here because a breed-specific image should be reliably identified rather than guessed.

What counts as a round-face cat?

“Round face” is a visual description, not a shared registry category. A round head, full cheeks, large round eyes or a short muzzle can contribute to the impression, but breeds and individuals vary. A shorter muzzle can also be an extreme conformation with welfare implications, so a rounded look should not be treated as an uncomplicated beauty feature.

The descriptions below distinguish breeds with explicit facial evidence in the cited profiles from additional recognized breeds that readers may encounter. Breed recognition by itself does not establish a particular face shape.

12 breeds to consider

1. Persian

The Persian is the clearest example in the cited breed descriptions: TICA describes a round head, short face, snub nose, full cheeks and round eyes; CFA also notes the round head and short nose. Its long coat calls for regular grooming. A short, flat facial structure warrants particular care: International Cat Care and veterinary partners identify Persians among brachycephalic cats and warn that extreme body shapes can cause health problems. These are welfare concerns, not a diagnosis of every Persian.

2. Himalayan

TICA places the Himalayan in its Persian Breed Group and says it shares that group’s body type. Its coat is long, like the Persian’s, rather than the Exotic Shorthair’s short, coarse coat. The cited material does not independently spell out the Himalayan’s facial details, so do not assume every Himalayan has an equally round face or the same degree of muzzle shortening.

3. Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic Shorthair shares the Persian-group body type according to TICA, but has a short, coarse coat rather than the Persian and Himalayan long coats. That coat distinction may matter to grooming plans; it does not establish a particular individual’s face shape or health.

4. Burmese

CFA describes the Burmese face as broad, with a short muzzle that preserves the rounded contours of the head. That supports including the breed in a round-face guide, but the cited profile does not justify assumptions about an individual cat’s temperament or health.

5. Scottish Fold

TICA’s Scottish Fold Longhair profile describes a rounded head and large round eyes. CFA notes that Scottish Folds may have folded or straight ears and either longhair or shorthair coats. The folded-ear feature is not merely cosmetic: International Cat Care and veterinary partners explain that it results from a cartilage mutation and discuss cartilage deformation and osteoarthritis, among other health problems associated with extreme conformation. Consider welfare carefully rather than choosing a cat chiefly for folded ears.

6. British Shorthair

British Shorthair appears in TICA’s breed standards index. That establishes registry recognition, not enough facial detail by itself to claim that every British Shorthair has a round face. Meet the cat and assess its build and features individually.

7. Chartreux

Chartreux is also listed in TICA’s breed standards index. The cited index does not supply the facial description needed to substantiate a specific roundness claim; individual appearance should guide whether a particular cat fits what you have in mind.

8. Selkirk Rex

TICA recognizes Selkirk Rex in its standards index, but that index alone is not evidence of a uniformly round face. Evaluate the individual cat rather than treating breed registration as a promise about facial shape.

9. Ragdoll

Ragdoll is included in TICA’s standards index. The cited source confirms recognition, not a detailed facial description, so it does not support a blanket claim that every Ragdoll has a round face.

10. Another Persian-group cat

When browsing Persian-group cats, compare the actual coat and facial structure rather than assuming the group label means identical appearance. TICA distinguishes long coats in Persian and Himalayan from the Exotic Shorthair’s short, coarse coat, while its Persian profile provides the explicit round-head description.

11. A straight-eared Scottish Fold

CFA notes that Scottish Fold cats may be shown with straight as well as folded ears. This is a useful reminder that the rounded-head description and the ear fold are separate traits; do not confuse one with the other or overlook the welfare concerns associated with the cartilage mutation behind folded ears.

12. A mixed-breed cat with a rounded face

A pedigree is not required for a cat to have a rounded-looking face. A shelter or rescue cat may suit your preference, but appearance alone cannot establish ancestry, health or likely personality. Ask the organization for the history it has and have a veterinarian assess the cat you are considering.

How to choose for your household

  • Put welfare ahead of a specific feature. International Cat Care’s veterinary statement, produced with FECAVA, FVE and UEVP, identifies flat faces and folded ears among extreme body shapes that can cause health problems. Ask about the individual cat’s health and any relevant veterinary evaluation; do not interpret a breed label as proof that a cat is healthy or unhealthy.
  • Match grooming to the coat. Long coats generally require more equipment and care than short-haired coats. TICA distinguishes the long coats of Persian and Himalayan from the Exotic Shorthair’s short, coarse coat. Choose a gentle brush suited to that cat’s coat and tolerance rather than buying a special brush based only on face shape.
  • Introduce brushing gently. International Cat Care recommends beginning kitten grooming with a very soft brush, rewards and short sessions that build gradually. For a cat wary of brushing, its home-modification guide advises moving slowly and trying a soft-bristle or rubber brush rather than forcing the process. Mats can hurt; ask a veterinary team for help instead of pulling them.
  • Meet the cat and ask specific questions. Ask a responsible breeder or rescue for the cat’s health history and observe how the individual responds to handling and the household setting. No breed profile can guarantee compatibility with children, other pets or a particular routine.
  • Use current professional guidance. Breed standards describe breed characteristics; they do not replace an individual veterinary assessment. Discuss visible breathing, eye, skin, mobility or grooming concerns with a veterinarian.

What breed standards can and cannot tell you

TICA’s standards index lists breeds including British Shorthair, Chartreux, Ragdoll, Selkirk Rex and Persian-group cats. CFA’s 2025–26 standards document lists standards and revision years for Persian (2025), Exotic (2025), Burmese (2023) and Scottish Fold (2023). These documents establish that standards exist; a registry listing does not itself prove that a breed has a particular facial shape, health outcome or personality. Ask for the relevant current breed profile and, for an individual cat, rely on its history and veterinary assessment.
