Thirteen cat breeds are commonly picked out for their large ears: Sphynx, Chausie, Abyssinian, Cornish Rex, Savannah, Oriental Shorthair, Balinese, Donskoy, Javanese, Bambino, Siamese, Devon Rex, and Peterbald. The list below follows the selection in Cats.com’s article on large-eared cats, last updated August 24, 2026. It is an editorial selection, not an official or exhaustive register of breeds. Where the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) publishes a breed standard or profile for a breed on the list, its wording is used to check the description.

“Big ears” is a visual impression, not a measurement. No comparative ear-size study or measured dataset was found for these breeds, so none of the rankings or comparisons below should be read as proof that one breed’s ears are bigger than another’s. Ears also vary from cat to cat within any breed.

How to read this list

The breed descriptions here are summaries of how each breed is typically described, not guarantees about any individual cat. Phrases such as “often described as” matter: a cat’s temperament, activity level and health depend on genetics, early handling, and the home it lives in. Cats.com’s article is the source for the full list and most of the summaries. CFA material is cited where it covers a breed directly.

The 13 breeds

Sphynx

Cats.com describes the Sphynx as a hairless breed with very large ears and a people-oriented, affectionate personality. CFA’s Sphynx breed standard calls the ears “large to very large” and says they are “Broad at the base, open and upright.” Hairlessness does not remove care needs: CFA notes the breed’s skin needs attention and lists hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hereditary myopathy, and sensitive digestive systems among the health issues prospective owners should understand. Ask a breeder about screening for these conditions before committing.

Abyssinian

According to Cats.com, the Abyssinian has oversized, pointed ears that tilt forward, which gives it an alert expression.

Cornish Rex

Cats.com describes high-set ears and a soft, wavy coat. The article says the breed originated in Cornwall and was discovered in the 1950s.

Savannah

Laws on owning Savannahs vary widely by location and are not covered here, so check local rules before choosing one.

Oriental Shorthair

Cats.com highlights oversized ears on a slender, angular body. CFA’s Oriental profile describes large, broad-based ears that continue the line of the wedge-shaped head. CFA also recommends weekly grooming for this breed, which is a practical point for a short-coated cat.

Balinese

Cats.com describes large ears, a long triangular head, and a cat that enjoys climbing and high places. For owners, an indoor climbing space such as a cat tree is a natural fit with that profile. Not every Balinese will need a particular tree, and the article does not describe a specific model.

Bambino

Cats.com describes the Bambino as a cross between a Sphynx and a Munchkin, with short legs and large ears. The article also says information on this relatively new breed is limited. Siamese

Cats.com describes the Siamese with a wedge-shaped head and large triangular ears, alongside a vocal and social temperament.

Devon Rex

Cats.com describes large, high-set ears and says the breed enjoys puzzle toys; an interactive puzzle toy for cats is a reasonable choice for this profile. CFA’s Devon Rex standard describes the ears as strikingly large but low-set, which conflicts with the high-set description in the Cats.com article. Check the placement on a specific cat rather than relying on either description. CFA also states that Devon Rex cats can dislike being left alone for long periods, so households with long absences should weigh that.

Peterbald

Cats.com describes the Peterbald as an elegant, slender cat with upright ears and a coat that ranges from hairless to short, fine fur.

Choosing among these breeds

Ear shape is the least useful basis for a decision on its own. Before choosing a breed, check the following for each candidate:

  • Activity and play needs: the descriptions above range from relaxed to very energetic, so match them to your daily schedule.
  • Companionship: several breeds are described as social or vocal, and some CFA material notes that certain breeds struggle with long periods alone.
  • Coat and skin care: hairless and rex-coated cats need different routines, and CFA’s grooming guidance should be read for each breed.
  • Breed-specific health: ask breeders what screening they perform, and review the health points in CFA’s standards for the breed you’re considering.
  • Household fit: consider children, other pets, local rules on exotic or hybrid breeds, and whether you have space for climbing furniture.

Limits of this list

Cats.com’s article provides the breed selection and most descriptions, and its breed summaries are secondary descriptions rather than breed-club standards. CFA material covers only some of the breeds named, so a few entries rest on the Cats.com article alone. Where sources disagree, as with Devon Rex ear placement, this article notes the difference rather than choosing one version.
