Short-haired dogs often need less coat care because they usually do not require routine haircuts, hand-stripping, or intensive dematting. They still need brushing, occasional bathing, nail trims, dental care, and periodic ear and skin checks. Short hair also does not necessarily mean low shedding: Labradors and Rottweilers, for example, can leave substantial hair around the home.

The breeds below generally have simple coat-care routines, but they vary in shedding, size, exercise needs, and other care demands. Consider the whole dog—not just grooming—when choosing a breed.

At a glance: short-haired dogs with simple coat care

Breed Typical coat care What to watch for
Beagle Weekly brushing Sheds; active and scent-driven
Boxer Brush once or twice weekly Regular nail and dental care
Doberman Pinscher Short-bristled brush or grooming mitt Does not need frequent baths or trimming
Great Dane Weekly brushing Large body means even moderate shedding can be noticeable
Weimaraner Very little coat grooming High exercise needs
Vizsla Occasional brushing Routine ear, nail, and dental care
Italian Greyhound Minimal brushing; wipe as needed Excessive bathing can irritate skin and coat
Basenji Weekly soft-brush or mitt session Bath only when particularly dirty
French Bulldog Weekly brushing Keep facial folds clean and dry
Boston Terrier Weekly brushing Occasional bathing and regular nail trims
Smooth-Coated Chihuahua Occasional brushing and baths as needed Different care from the long-haired variety
Smooth-Coated Dachshund Towel wipe or hound glove Moderate shedding; other coat varieties differ
Miniature Pinscher Weekly brush or grooming mitt Regular nail trimming
Rottweiler Weekly brushing Shedding increases in spring and fall
Whippet Weekly grooming Nails may need frequent trimming
German Shorthaired Pointer Brush every few days Seasonal shedding; routine ear and nail care
Labrador Retriever Regular brushing Dense double coat sheds considerably
Rhodesian Ridgeback Weekly brushing Nail trimming can be difficult for some dogs
Bull Terrier Weekly soft-brush session Occasional ear checks and regular nail trims
Greyhound Weekly rubdown or grooming mitt Regular baths and nail care

These are typical coat-care routines, not guarantees. Individual needs vary, and a dog may need more care when dirty or when advised by a veterinarian.

20 short-haired dog breeds with few grooming needs

1. Beagle

A Beagle’s short-to-medium coat generally needs a weekly brushing. Beagles shed, but they do not usually need professional clipping or elaborate coat care. Their grooming routine is simple; their exercise, scent work, and training needs are not. Check and care for their ears as part of routine grooming.

2. Boxer

The Boxer has a short, shiny coat that is easy to maintain with a rubber curry brush or hound glove once or twice a week. Baths are occasional rather than scheduled hair appointments, and the breed does not need routine haircuts. Regular nail care and frequent tooth brushing are still important.

3. Doberman Pinscher

Dobermans are largely a wash-and-wear breed. A short-bristled brush or grooming mitt can remove loose hair, but they generally do not need frequent baths or coat trimming. Their short coat does not reduce their exercise, socialization, and training needs.

4. Great Dane

The Great Dane’s short, smooth coat generally needs weekly brushing and only occasional bathing. The dog’s large body means even moderate shedding can produce a noticeable amount of hair. During seasonal shedding, daily brushing may be useful.

5. Weimaraner

Weimaraners have a short coat that requires very little coat grooming. They still need routine nail, ear, and dental care, plus occasional bathing. Their high exercise needs should not be confused with low overall maintenance.

6. Vizsla

Vizslas have a short, sleek coat without an undercoat, so they do not require complicated grooming. Occasional brushing helps remove shed hair. Ears, nails, and teeth need routine attention, and the breed’s activity needs are significant.

8. Basenji

Basenjis are notably clean and have a short coat that generally needs only a weekly once-over with a soft brush, rubber grooming mitt, or hound glove. They usually need a bath only when particularly dirty.

9. French Bulldog

The French Bulldog’s short coat generally needs weekly brushing and occasional bathing. Keep facial folds clean and dry, and trim the nails regularly. Fold care is an extra task beyond the breed’s otherwise simple coat routine.

10. Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers have fine, sleek coats that shed minimally. Weekly brushing, occasional bathing, and regular nail trims are generally sufficient. A soft brush or grooming mitt is enough for most dogs.

11. Smooth-Coated Chihuahua

Only the smooth-coated Chihuahua belongs on a short-haired list. This variety needs occasional brushing and baths as needed; the long-haired variety has different care requirements. Use gentle tools and avoid unnecessary bathing.

12. Smooth-Coated Dachshund

A smooth Dachshund is relatively wash-and-wear, typically needing little beyond a towel wipe or hound glove. Smooth coats shed moderately, and long-haired and wire-haired Dachshunds require different grooming routines.

13. Miniature Pinscher

The Miniature Pinscher’s short, hard coat is easily maintained with a weekly pass using a soft brush or hound glove. There is no need for routine clipping or elaborate styling. Regular nail trimming remains necessary.

14. Rottweiler

Rottweilers have a straight, coarse outer coat with an undercoat on the neck and thighs. Weekly brushing and regular bathing are usually enough, but shedding increases substantially during spring and fall.

15. Whippet

The Whippet’s short, smooth coat needs little beyond weekly grooming and an occasional bath. Check the ears regularly, and pay attention to the nails, which may need frequent trimming if they do not wear down naturally.

16. German Shorthaired Pointer

A German Shorthaired Pointer’s short coat is easy to groom with a brush or mitt every few days and occasional bathing. It can shed heavily at certain times of year. Ears and nails need regular care, especially in an active dog that spends time outdoors.

How to choose among them

If the goal is less hair in the house, do not choose based on coat length alone. A smooth-coated breed may be easier to keep tidy than a Labrador or Rottweiler, but some short-coated dogs still shed considerably. If the goal is to avoid professional grooming appointments, the breeds on this list generally do not need routine haircuts.

Match the dog’s temperament and activity level to your household, too. Weimaraners, Vizslas, German Shorthaired Pointers, Boxers, Ridgebacks, and Bull Terriers may have simple coats but substantial exercise, training, or handling needs. Great Danes can produce a lot of hair despite modest shedding, and French Bulldogs need facial-fold care. A low-maintenance coat is one useful feature, not a promise that the breed is low-maintenance in every respect.

FAQ

What is the lowest-maintenance short-haired dog?

There is no single best choice for every household. Italian Greyhounds need almost no brushing, while Basenjis, Greyhounds, Miniature Pinschers, and smooth-coated Chihuahuas also have simple coat routines. All dogs still need basic care such as nail trims and dental attention.

Do short-haired dogs shed less than long-haired dogs?

Not necessarily. Labradors and Rottweilers, among other smooth-coated breeds, can shed substantially. Short hairs can also be difficult to remove from upholstery and clothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which short-haired dogs do not need haircuts?

Most breeds on this list do not need routine haircuts because their coats do not require regular clipping. They still need brushing, bathing when needed, nail care, and dental care.

Are short-haired dogs better for people who dislike grooming?

They may be a better fit if you want to avoid clipping, styling, and intensive dematting, but they are not maintenance-free. Consider shedding, exercise, training, wrinkles, size, and other care needs alongside grooming time.

The Bottom Line

These 20 breeds generally do not require routine haircuts or intensive coat care. However, Labs and Rottweilers can shed considerably, French Bulldogs need facial-fold care, and athletic breeds such as Vizslas and German Shorthaired Pointers need substantial exercise. Choose for the whole dog, then provide routine brushing, nail trimming, dental care, ear checks, and bathing as needed.
