Plan exercise, meals, bathroom breaks, rest and engaging activities around the schedule you can actually maintain. If your dog repeatedly shows distress when left, contact a veterinarian rather than treating it as simple boredom.
Start by mapping the new day
Before a work, school or family schedule changes, write down when your dog will eat, go outside, exercise, rest and spend time alone. Mark which parts must move and which can stay familiar. This simple plan helps you spot gaps—especially long stretches without a bathroom opportunity or activity—before the new routine begins.
Dogs still need food, water, bathroom opportunities, physical exercise and mental activity when household schedules get busier. A yard can provide access to outdoor space, but it does not necessarily replace a walk or shared play. Consider what your individual dog needs and what your household can reliably provide.
Change the routine in small steps
When you know a major change is coming, begin adjusting the affected parts of the day ahead of time. For example, gradually move a walk or meal toward its new time rather than changing the whole schedule at once. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends making routine changes over days or weeks and keeping other parts of the day consistent where possible. The right pace depends on the dog; there is no single timeline that suits every household. AKC: How to Change Your Dog’s Routine

Keep familiar cues and activities in place where you can. If the morning walk needs to happen earlier, for instance, try to preserve familiar mealtime or bedtime patterns while the dog gets used to the change.
Practise the new schedule before it starts
If your dog has become used to having someone home, do not wait until the first full day away to introduce longer absences. Rehearse the planned departure routine and build alone time gradually, increasing it in a way that takes your dog’s response into account. The AKC recommends preparing dogs ahead of a return to work, and the ASPCA advises gradual departures when a dog needs to learn to be alone. Cover gaps in bathroom access or exercise
If your schedule leaves a stretch that your dog cannot comfortably manage, consider whether a dog walker or midday pet-care provider can help. The AKC names a dog walker as one option when an owner’s schedule makes it difficult to meet a dog’s exercise needs. Whether that arrangement is suitable depends on the dog and household; it is not a requirement for every dog. Plan bathroom access as well as activity when deciding whether the day is workable.

Notice how your dog responds when alone
Restlessness or destructive behavior after a schedule change does not, by itself, establish separation anxiety. Repeated barking or howling, destructive behavior, house soiling, panting or drooling, pacing, and attempts to escape can be signs of distress associated with being left alone. A camera or trusted observer may help you notice behavior you would otherwise miss, but monitoring does not diagnose a condition. For recurring or severe signs, discuss what you are seeing with a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist. AKC: Leaving Your Dog Home Alone and ASPCA: Separation Anxiety
Separation-anxiety treatment may involve desensitization and counterconditioning, but an individualized plan can require guidance from a trained, experienced professional. Do not punish a dog for anxiety-related behavior such as destructive activity; punishment does not address the underlying distress. The AVMA also advises against punishment in its return-to-work handout. AVMA: Returning to Work and Your Pet
