These are different working styles, so there is no single breed that is best at all of them.
This role-based guide compares 21 breed examples described by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Breed tendencies are a starting point, not a guarantee: individual training, handler experience, terrain, and local hunting rules matter.
What does “tracking” mean in hunting?
People use “tracking” broadly to mean locating or pursuing game. A scent hound follows a trail; a sighthound uses vision and speed; a pointer finds and indicates birds; a spaniel flushes birds; and a retriever brings back downed game. A dog suited to one task is not automatically suited to another.
AKC’s hunting-breed guide describes breeds by hunting roles such as locating quarry, flushing, and retrieving. Its scenthound overview offers examples of scent-following breeds. These are descriptions of breed roles, not standardized tests comparing every dog.

How to choose a hunting dog
- Choose the quarry and task. Decide whether you need a dog to trail scent, locate birds, flush, retrieve, tree, or pursue by sight.
- Match the working style to your setting. Consider terrain, water, whether the work involves a pack, and how much independence the task requires.
- Look beyond the breed name. Ask about the individual dog’s training and experience relevant to the work you want.
- Check local rules. Permitted species and dog-use rules vary. Consult your local wildlife authority before hunting or training for a particular quarry.
The AKC sources describe broad breed roles; they do not establish a head-to-head performance ranking or determine whether a specific method is legal where you live. No breed should be treated as a guaranteed performer without appropriate training and handling.
FAQ
Which dog is best for tracking rabbits?
Beagles are a clear example of pack hounds that follow rabbit and hare trails. Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, Harriers, and Grand Basset Griffon Vendéens are other scent-hound examples. Pharaoh Hounds pursue rabbits using sight and speed rather than the same scent-trailing approach.
Are pointers and scent hounds doing the same job?
No. Scent hounds follow trails, while pointers locate birds and indicate their position. Both can help hunters find game, but the task and working style differ.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Labrador Retrievers are a well-known example of dogs that retrieve birds on land and in water. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers also retrieve ducks and are known for luring them before the shot.
Which breeds track and tree raccoons?
Treeing Walker, Black and Tan, and Bluetick Coonhounds are examples associated with raccoon work. Treeing and vocalizing are part of this hunting style.
Does breed alone guarantee hunting ability?
No. Breed tendencies describe common roles, not the performance of every individual dog. Training, handler experience, terrain, and the dog’s individual abilities all matter.
Are these hunting methods legal everywhere?
No single answer applies everywhere. Hunting rules vary by location and quarry, so check current requirements with your local wildlife authority.
