Cat fur is more than a covering: its structure helps protect skin and regulate temperature, while its color, growth, and shedding reflect several interacting factors. These 23 facts explain what a cat’s coat is made of, why it varies, and which changes are worth watching.

What is cat fur made of?

1. Several hairs can share one pore

Cat follicles are compound: a central hair and three to 15 smaller hairs may emerge through the same pore. The visible coat is therefore a group of hairs, not simply one hair per opening. Merck Veterinary Manual

2. Kittens’ follicles change as they grow

Cats are born with simple hair follicles that develop into compound follicles. The coat’s underlying structure changes during development. Merck Veterinary Manual

3. Many coats have two layers

Most breeds have outer guard hairs and a finer undercoat. The undercoat adds insulation, while the outer hairs form the visible surface. The amount and feel of each layer vary substantially among cats. VCA Animal Hospitals

4. Coat type shapes grooming needs

Some cats have sparse coats or shed very little; others have long hair that tangles readily. Length, texture, and undercoat density affect how often a cat may need brushing and whether its coat is prone to mats. VCA Animal Hospitals

What does a cat’s coat do?

5. Fur helps shield the skin

A cat’s coat helps protect the skin from physical damage and ultraviolet exposure. It is a protective layer, though it does not make the skin invulnerable. Merck Veterinary Manual

6. The coat can help regulate temperature

Air trapped among the smaller hairs provides insulation. In warm weather, shorter, thicker hairs and fewer secondary hairs can allow more air to move through the coat, contributing to cooling. Coat function changes with hair growth and season. Merck Veterinary Manual

7. Fur can help a cat blend in

8. Some hairs are part of a sensitive touch system

Specialized sensory cells associated with whiskers and certain hair follicles contribute to a cat’s sense of touch. Whiskers are not just distinctive facial hairs; they are connected to sensory structures beneath the skin. Merck Veterinary Manual

9. Skin oils give the coat sheen

Oil glands in the skin release sebum, which helps keep skin pliable and hydrated and gives the coat its sheen. A change in coat appearance can have many possible causes, so shine alone is not a health test. Merck Veterinary Manual

Why do cats have different fur colors and textures?

10. Genes influence hair shape, size, and length

Genetics partly determines the size, shape, and length of a cat’s hair. Nutrition, hormones, season, disease, drugs, and environment can also affect hair growth or coat health. Merck Veterinary Manual

11. Agouti helps shape tabby patterns

The agouti gene is one factor in coat patterning. UC Davis explains that non-agouti cats are solid in color, so tabby patterns can be harder to identify in them. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory

12. Brown gene variants can change dark pigment

Variants in the brown gene alter eumelanin, a dark pigment, and can produce chocolate or cinnamon shades. These are examples of how different genetic mechanisms influence coat color. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory

13. Colorpoint patterns are temperature-sensitive

Temperature-sensitive alleles can produce point patterns and sepia coloration, according to the UC Davis coat-color guide. This mechanism helps explain why pigment distribution can differ across parts of the body. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory

14. Dilution changes pigment distribution

Dilution affects how pigment is distributed along the hair shaft and can dilute all colors. It is distinct from the mechanisms behind other patterns and shades. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory

15. Color names are not always universal

Why is my cat shedding so much?

16. Shedding may follow seasonal cycles

Some cats in cooler climates, especially those that go outdoors, have two heavy shedding periods a year, around late spring and late fall. Many indoor cats shed at lower levels throughout the year. These are common patterns, not a schedule every cat follows. VCA Animal Hospitals

17. Daylight and temperature matter too

Hair growth and shedding can respond to temperature and daylight as well as season. A cat’s environment can therefore influence how noticeable shedding is from one part of the year to another. Merck Veterinary Manual

How much do cats groom themselves?

18. Grooming takes up a substantial part of the day

Cornell’s Pamela Perry, D.V.M., says cats typically spend 30 to 50 percent of their day grooming themselves. Cornell does not state the publication year for this estimate. Cornell Feline Health Center

19. Healthy adult cats rarely need a bath

VCA says most healthy adult cats are fastidious groomers and rarely require bathing. If a bath is needed, use shampoo formulated for cats; a cat’s health, age, lifestyle, and coat condition can change what is appropriate. VCA Animal Hospitals

How should you groom a cat’s coat?

20. Match the brush or comb to the coat

Short coats or sparse undercoats may suit a bristle brush, while medium- and long-haired coats can benefit from a long-toothed metal comb or brush. Specialized undercoat combs can help remove loose undercoat. Choose a tool for the individual cat and use a gentle touch; a veterinary team can advise on suitable options. VCA Animal Hospitals

21. Brushing can do more than remove loose hair

Regular brushing can remove loose hair and dead skin cells, clear debris, distribute natural skin oils, and give you a chance to inspect the coat. Long, silky, or curly coats may need daily brushing; short-haired cats may need it less often. VCA says daily brushing reduces hair swallowed during self-grooming and can reduce hairballs. VCA Animal Hospitals

22. Mats need careful handling

For mat removal, VCA advises using clippers rather than scissors and seeking professional help for severe mats. Many long-haired cats can cope with summer heat without a haircut, so do not assume a seasonal trim is necessary. VCA Animal Hospitals

What does a cat’s coat say about its health?

23. A new coat change is a clue, not a diagnosis

A dull, brittle, greasy, flaky, or patchy coat may be associated with nutrition, illness, parasites, allergy, stress, or difficulty grooming. Cornell lists hair loss, excessive scratching, licking or chewing, redness or swelling, flaky or scabby skin, and bumps among signs of skin disease. Excessive licking can accompany itch or pain, and its pattern or location may offer clues, but causes overlap. A veterinarian can assess significant hair loss, persistent irritation, or unusually intense licking; appearance alone cannot establish the cause.
