3 Expert Methods for Keeping Rabbits from Eating Plants

The most dependable way to protect garden plants from rabbits is to block access with a properly installed barrier. Labeled repellents, less hiding cover, and less-preferred plants can add protection, especially when used together.

The most reliable way to keep rabbits from eating plants is to block access with a properly installed barrier: use mesh with openings no larger than 1 inch, and secure the bottom so rabbits cannot dig underneath. Add a labeled repellent where fencing is impractical, reduce nearby hiding cover, and protect new transplants while they establish.

Rabbit damage is usually easy to recognize: stems are cut cleanly at an angle, seedlings disappear at soil level, and pea-sized droppings appear nearby. Rabbits also tend to browse close to cover such as brush, tall grass, dense shrubs, or debris. Deer usually leave rougher, torn-looking damage and feed higher above the ground.

1. Build a fence or plant guard rabbits cannot get through

A properly installed physical barrier is the most reliable long-term method for protecting plants. Use chicken wire, hardware cloth, or flexible garden netting with openings no larger than 1 inch. Larger mesh can let young rabbits squeeze through.

For garden beds

  • Make the fence about 2 feet high for most cottontails and brush rabbits.
  • Use a fence closer to 3 feet high where jackrabbits, snow, dogs, or other factors could make rabbits jump higher.
  • Bury the bottom edge 6–10 inches underground, or create an outward-facing apron that rabbits cannot dig beneath.
  • For an apron, bend roughly 12 inches of mesh outward along the ground and secure it, burying it several inches if possible.

The bottom edge is the part most likely to fail. A fence that simply rests on the soil leaves a gap that a determined rabbit can enlarge quickly. Stake or bury the mesh, and make sure a gate closes tightly without a digging gap underneath.

For individual trees and shrubs

Use a wire cylinder around each vulnerable plant. The guard should be at least 18–24 inches wide, stand 2–3 inches away from the trunk, and extend a few inches into the soil. Do not wrap wire directly against the trunk; the space allows the plant to grow and keeps rabbits from reaching through the mesh.

In snowy areas, the guard must rise above the expected snow depth. Snow effectively raises the ground, allowing rabbits to reach branches that would normally be out of range.

Inspect barriers regularly

Walk the perimeter after storms and at least periodically during the growing season. Look for lifted edges, holes, loose stakes, damaged mesh, and fresh digging. If a rabbit has entered an enclosure, check that it is out before closing the gate. A rabbit may hide inside and have trouble finding the exit.

Physical exclusion is especially important for vegetable gardens, where relying on a repellent can leave food contaminated or fail when rabbits are hungry.

2. Add a labeled rabbit repellent where fencing is impractical

Commercial repellents can reduce browsing by creating an unpleasant taste, odor, or sensation. Products containing putrescent whole-egg solids or dried blood have reduced rabbit feeding on some plants. They are best viewed as a secondary defense, not a replacement for a fence.

Repellents are most useful on:

  • Ornamental shrubs
  • Young trees and vines
  • Woody plants during winter
  • Plants that will not be harvested for food

Apply the product before serious damage begins and follow its label for reapplication. Rain, heavy dew, sprinkler irrigation, and new plant growth can reduce coverage. A treatment that worked last week may no longer protect fresh leaves or shoots.

Check the label before treating edible plants

Never assume that a repellent is safe for vegetables, herbs, or fruit simply because it is sold for garden use. The label must specifically allow application to that crop and state any application restrictions or harvest interval. A product labeled for deer is not automatically labeled for rabbits or appropriate for edible plants.

Why common home remedies disappoint

Soap shavings, dryer sheets, human hair, blood meal, radios, and similar tricks may create a short-lived disturbance, but they do not reliably exclude rabbits. Rabbits can become accustomed to repeated sights and smells, and a hungry animal may ignore an unpleasant odor to reach a preferred plant. University of Minnesota Extension specifically reports that Irish Spring soap is not a dependable rabbit or deer repellent.

These fences can be placed in any shape you want, including but not limited to straight lines, "L", "O" or "Z" shapes. When you need to remove them, you just have to take them out, fold them for storage or move them to another location, it's that easy.
  • Garden Protector: This animal barrier will not only prevent curious small animals from "ruining" your garden, but it will also keep dog walkers out of your yard. It may not completely stop large dogs from digging holes all over your garden, but it will act as an extra barrier. A gentle arch-shaped fence will also keep some overly curious animals from getting hurt when they try to get through the fence.

3. Remove hiding cover and redesign the planting

Rabbits often use nearby vegetation and clutter as daytime shelter. Reduce cover around the garden by removing or trimming:

  • Brush piles
  • Tall or dense grass
  • Weedy fence rows
  • Low, overgrown shrubs
  • Stored boards, debris, and other materials
  • Open spaces beneath sheds and similar structures

Habitat modification is particularly useful in residential yards, where rabbits may have few alternative hiding places. It is less likely to solve a jackrabbit problem because jackrabbits can travel farther between shelter and feeding areas.

Choose plants rabbits are less likely to prefer

No plant is completely rabbit-proof. “Rabbit-resistant” means less preferred under ordinary conditions, not immune to feeding. Hungry rabbits may browse plants they usually avoid, including some plants described as toxic.

When redesigning a bed, place less-preferred plants around especially vulnerable specimens. Plants with aromatic foliage, prickles or spines, tough or leathery leaves, fuzzy texture, or milky sap are often less attractive. Examples recommended by Colorado State University Extension include:

  • Alliums

  • Catmint
  • Lavender
  • Salvias
  • Bleeding heart

Protect new transplants regardless of their species. Small seedlings and recently planted shrubs are much easier for rabbits to damage than established plants, and even a few bites can kill a young plant. A temporary wire guard can remain in place until the plant is larger and better established.

Use the methods together

For persistent browsing, combine the controls rather than testing one weak deterrent at a time:

  1. Exclude first: fence the bed or cage the individual plant with 1-inch mesh.
  2. Use repellent selectively: apply a rabbit-labeled product to ornamentals or other plants where fencing is difficult.
  3. Make the area less inviting: remove brush and dense cover, then use less-preferred plants around vulnerable ones.

A motion-activated sprinkler can provide temporary help, especially early in the season. Move it from time to time because rabbits may learn that a repeated deterrent is harmless. It should supplement, not replace, a physical barrier.

What not to assume

Claim What is more accurate
“A 2-foot fence always works.” It is generally adequate for cottontails and brush rabbits, but snow, jackrabbits, frightened animals, and installation gaps can defeat it.
“Rabbit-resistant plants cannot be eaten.” They are simply less attractive. A hungry rabbit may still browse them.
“Any deer repellent works on rabbits.” The product must be labeled for the target animal and the intended plant or crop.
“Soap, hair, radios, and scarecrows solve the problem.” These methods are inconsistent and often lose their effect as rabbits adapt.
“Relocating one rabbit fixes the yard.” Other rabbits can move in, and trapping or relocation may create legal and animal-welfare problems. Check local wildlife regulations first.

FAQ

What is the best way to stop rabbits from eating garden plants?

Install a physical barrier made from mesh with openings no larger than 1 inch. Make it about 2 feet high for most cottontails and brush rabbits, and bury the bottom 6–10 inches or secure an outward-facing apron to prevent digging underneath.

Will rabbit repellent work on vegetables?

It may reduce browsing, but only use a product if its label specifically allows treatment of that crop and gives the required harvest interval. Repellents are often more practical for ornamentals than vegetable gardens, and they must be reapplied after rain, irrigation, or new growth.

What plants do rabbits usually avoid?

Rabbits often show less interest in aromatic, prickly, tough, leathery, fuzzy, or milky-leaved plants. Examples include alliums, bee balm, catmint, lavender, salvias, and bleeding heart. None is guaranteed rabbit-proof, particularly when food is scarce.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I remove a rabbit from my yard?

Do not trap or relocate a rabbit without checking local wildlife rules. Relocation can create welfare and legal issues, and removing one animal may not prevent others from entering. Exclusion, cover reduction, and selective planting are usually safer first steps.

The Bottom Line

Start with exclusion: use tight 1-inch mesh, make the barrier high enough for local conditions, and stop rabbits digging beneath it. Add a properly labeled repellent for suitable ornamental plants, remove nearby hiding cover, and protect new transplants until they establish. These layered measures are far more dependable than soap, hair, or scare devices used alone.
