Si está herido, frío, débil, letárgico o tuvo contacto con un gato o perro, llama cuanto antes.
3 pasos seguros si encuentras un mapache bebé
- No lo alimentes ni le des líquidos. No ofrezcas leche, fórmula, agua ni comida, salvo que un rehabilitador autorizado te lo indique expresamente.
- No des por hecho que está huérfano. Su madre puede estar buscando alimento o esperando a que el lugar quede tranquilo. Mantén a personas y mascotas lejos y obsérvalo desde una distancia segura.
- Contacta a un rehabilitador autorizado. Sigue sus instrucciones. Si te pide contener al animal, usa un recipiente seguro y ventilado que ya tengas disponible, mantenlo tranquilo y reduce el contacto.
No intentes criarlo ni tratarlo por tu cuenta. Moverlo o manipularlo sin orientación puede interferir con una posible reunificación y aumentar el estrés o el riesgo de lesiones.
¿Cuándo hay que pedir ayuda cuanto antes?
Llama a un rehabilitador autorizado si el mapache está herido, frío, débil o letárgico, o si sabes que un gato o perro lo atrapó. No intentes reunirlo con su madre si está lesionado, débil o empeora; pide instrucciones profesionales.
Si parece activo y sano, la orientación puede ser distinta. El Wildlife Center of Virginia indica que, en el escenario que describe, se puede dejar al bebé en un lugar seguro y apartado de mascotas hasta 12 horas para permitir que la madre regrese. No tomes ese plazo como regla general: depende del estado del animal y de las indicaciones locales. Si no regresa, contacta a un rehabilitador.

Si un rehabilitador indica que lo contengas
Sigue las instrucciones que te dé para el recipiente y el lugar donde mantenerlo. La recomendación de Roanoke Wildlife Rescue es usar un recipiente seguro y ventilado, mantener al mapache tranquilo y reducir el contacto. Evita superficies calientes directas y no le des nada por la boca salvo indicación específica del profesional.
