Setters share a specialized history: they were developed to use scent to locate upland game birds and then indicate the birds’ location through a characteristic pointing or “setting” behavior. They can look alike at a glance, but their size, coat pattern, working style, and typical household needs differ considerably.

1. English Setter
The English Setter is a medium-sized sporting dog developed in England to work across varied terrain. Of the four setter breeds, it is generally the smallest. The breed is especially recognizable for its mostly white coat covered with colored speckling called belton.
#1 Best Overall

- DURABILITY and CONVENIENCE: Made of durable nylon webbing, strong quick release buckle and metal D ring. Easy to adjust and put on or take off. All metal accessories are strong and rust-proof. Machine washable. Easy care for daily use
- REFLECTIVITY: Highly reflective threads keep high visibility at night for safety
- BONUS DOG LEASH: A free 5ft dog leash is included. Featured with comfortable foam handle, strong climbing rope, and tangle-free hook
Appearance
Belton may be blue, orange, lemon, or liver, and it can also appear in tricolor combinations. The speckling ranges from relatively light to more extensive markings, so English Setters do not all look identical.
AKC reference figures place males at approximately 25–27 inches at the shoulder and females at approximately 23–25 inches. These are breed-reference measurements, not a guarantee of an individual dog’s adult size.
Temperament and activity
The AKC describes the English Setter as friendly, mellow, and merry. That combination can make the breed a pleasant companion in an active household. Outdoors, an English Setter may be energetic and highly interested in scents, birds, and movement; at home, an adequately exercised adult can often settle into a quieter routine.
Recommended Free Tools
Daily exercise is still essential. Walks, secure off-leash activity where appropriate, retrieving, scent games, field work, and canine sports can all help meet the breed’s physical and mental needs. A yard alone is not a substitute for interaction or structured activity.
Training and puppy care
English Setters are sensitive to harsh correction. Early, consistent training using rewards and clear boundaries is generally more productive than intimidation or severe punishment. Socialization should expose a puppy gradually and positively to people, dogs, handling, sounds, travel, and different environments.
Young English Setters should not be pushed into strenuous running, repetitive jumping, or other high-impact exercise before their bones and joints mature. Age-appropriate walks, play, training games, and veterinary guidance are safer foundations for a growing dog.
Best shorthand: the generally smallest setter, with a white-and-speckled belton coat and a gentle, companionable disposition.

The Irish Setter is the tall, athletic, solid-red setter associated with Ireland. It was developed as a swift gundog capable of covering large expanses of Irish terrain and remains one of the most recognizable sporting breeds.
Appearance
The coat may range from red to chestnut or mahogany. Its tall, elegant outline and flowing feathering distinguish it from the more heavily built Gordon Setter and the stockier Irish Red and White Setter.

Typical AKC reference figures are approximately 27 inches for males and 25 inches for females. Reference weights are around 70 pounds for males and 60 pounds for females, although an individual dog’s healthy weight depends on its structure, sex, age, and condition.
Temperament and exercise
The AKC characterizes the Irish Setter as active, sweet-natured, and outgoing. In practical terms, this is usually a poor match for a sedentary home that expects a dog to entertain itself. Irish Setters need substantial daily physical activity along with mental stimulation.
Useful outlets include long walks or hikes, retrieving, scent work, tracking, obedience, rally, agility, hunting activities, and other structured sports. Training should begin early and remain patient and positive. A bored or under-exercised Irish Setter may invent its own activities, including destructive or excessively exuberant behavior.
Coat care
Feathering on the ears, chest, legs, belly, and tail can collect tangles and debris. The AKC recommends brushing at least twice a week with a pin brush or soft-bristle brush. A long-toothed metal comb can help identify and work through tangles and mats. Brush gently; painful mat removal may require professional grooming rather than forceful pulling.
Routine care also includes nail trimming and regular attention to the ears, eyes, teeth, and skin. The breed’s coat is not a reason to avoid outdoor activity, but owners should expect ongoing maintenance.
Health considerations
Irish Setters are generally healthy as a breed, but responsible breeders commonly screen breeding dogs for hip dysplasia, thyroid disease, and progressive retinal atrophy. Screening reduces risk; it does not guarantee that every puppy will remain free of disease.
Because Irish Setters are large and deep-chested, owners should also learn the signs of bloat, a potentially life-threatening emergency. Sudden abdominal enlargement, repeated unproductive attempts to vomit, restlessness, weakness, or collapse require immediate veterinary attention. Suspected bloat is not a condition to monitor at home.
Best shorthand: the tall, fast, outgoing solid-red setter that needs significant exercise, training, and coat maintenance.
3. Gordon Setter
The Gordon Setter originated in Scotland and is the largest and heaviest of the four setter breeds. It was developed for stamina and dependable work across demanding Scottish terrain, including rough moorland.

Appearance
The Gordon Setter has a predominantly black coat with rich tan markings. Feathering appears on the ears, chest, legs, belly, and tail. Its heavier bone and substantial build make it visibly more robust than the other setters.
Temperament and working style
The AKC describes the Gordon Setter as bold, confident, and serious in the field, while also affectionate at home and closely bonded to its family. Compared with the exuberant image many people associate with the Irish Setter, the Gordon often presents a more deliberate and substantial working style.
Its size does not mean it is a low-energy dog. Gordon Setters were valued for working for extended periods, and modern dogs need daily physical and mental stimulation. Hiking, field work, scent-based activities, retrieving, obedience, and other purposeful training can be appropriate outlets.
Training and lifestyle
Gordon Setters mature relatively slowly. Owners should plan for a physically imposing dog that may retain youthful behavior for a considerable period. Patient training, careful socialization, and sensible exercise are important while the dog develops.
The breed can suit an active household that wants a loyal companion and is prepared to include the dog in daily life. It is less suitable for someone seeking a decorative, independent dog that needs little activity. Gordon Setters generally do best with meaningful companionship rather than long periods of isolation.
Best shorthand: the substantial black-and-tan Scottish setter, known for stamina, loyalty, and a serious field temperament.
4. Irish Red and White Setter
The Irish Red and White Setter is an athletic Irish bird dog with a primarily white coat marked by red patches. Although related in historical purpose to the Irish Setter, it is a separate breed with its own appearance and breed history.
Appearance and history
The medium-length coat is silky and includes feathering. The red-and-white pattern is the breed’s defining visual feature. It is generally somewhat shorter and stockier than the solid-red Irish Setter. AKC reference figures place males at approximately 24.5–26 inches and females at approximately 22.5–24 inches.
The breed’s roots reach back at least to the 1600s. It nearly disappeared before dedicated breeders revived it during the twentieth century. The AKC recognized the Irish Red and White Setter as its 159th breed, with registration eligibility beginning January 1, 2009. Its relatively limited population is one reason prospective owners may need patience when locating an ethical breeder or an available rescue dog.

Temperament and exercise
The AKC describes the Irish Red and White Setter as courageous, spirited, determined, affectionate, friendly, and high-spirited. It remains primarily a field dog with strong stamina and pointing ability.
Short, upbeat, positive training sessions are generally a good approach. Suitable activities may include hunting, tracking, obedience, agility, scent work, and other sports that give the dog a task. As with the other setters, a secure outdoor area can help but does not replace regular exercise, training, and human interaction.
Health considerations
Responsible breeders should pay attention to health screening that may include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, posterior polar cataracts, von Willebrand’s disease, hypothyroidism, and immune disorders. A prospective owner should ask what testing has been performed on the parents and request the relevant documentation rather than relying only on a breeder’s general statement that the line is healthy.
Best shorthand: the visually distinctive white-and-red setter, generally stockier than the Irish Setter and driven, athletic, and relatively uncommon.

All four are Sporting Group dogs with a scent-oriented working history. They were bred to locate upland game birds and indicate their presence, so many retain a strong interest in birds, wildlife, scents, and movement. That instinct can affect recall, leash behavior, fencing requirements, and interactions with small animals.
- They are active dogs. Physical exercise is important, but most also need training, scent games, sports, field work, or another purposeful mental outlet.
- They are intelligent and people-oriented. Consistent, reward-based training is generally more effective than harsh correction.
- They need early socialization. Positive exposure to people, dogs, handling, sounds, and environments helps establish useful household behavior.
- They are not interchangeable. Size, coat, intensity, maturity, and individual temperament vary by breed and by dog.
- Breed tendencies are not guarantees. Genetics, early experiences, health, age, training, and the individual dog all matter.

These are starting points, not guarantees. Before choosing a dog, consider the specific adult dog’s temperament, age, health, socialization, exercise history, and compatibility with children, cats, other dogs, and your daily schedule.
Practical ownership checklist
- Plan daily exercise that matches the dog’s age, health, and development.
- Add mental work: obedience, scent games, tracking, retrieving, field training, or a suitable canine sport.
- Use positive reinforcement and keep sessions consistent; short, upbeat sessions are particularly useful for young dogs.
- Provide secure containment and take the breed’s interest in birds and wildlife seriously.
- Brush feathering regularly, especially on Irish Setters and other dogs with tangling-prone coats.
- Keep nails trimmed and check ears, eyes, teeth, skin, and coat as part of routine care.
- Ask breeders for appropriate health-testing information, not merely verbal assurances.
- Do not treat breed-level health information as a diagnosis. Discuss an individual dog’s risks and care with a veterinarian.
Further reading for comparing breeds
A comprehensive dog breed reference book can be useful when comparing official breed histories, standards, photographs, and puppy-buying guidance. The AKC Shop lists The New Complete Dog Book, 23rd Edition, a hardcover reference that includes profiles of AKC-recognized breeds. Check current availability and edition details before purchasing.
For day-to-day care, a pin brush or soft-bristle brush and a long-toothed metal dog comb are practical categories to consider for feathered coats. Choose tools appropriate to the individual dog, work gently, and use a professional groomer for severe mats. Treats can support positive-reinforcement training, but no particular brand or formulation is required by the breed guidance.
